Chapter 290: Chapter 290: List Lost?
While they were having lunch, Roman Rowe asked, "Boss Hart, have you been watching that livestream lately?"
"Huh?" Lily Hart was confused for a moment. ’What livestream?’ Then it hit her. ’Oh, the one of the Mysterious Clan.’ Life had been too comfortable these past few days because of the heavy rain, and she had completely forgotten about it.
One look at her and Roman Rowe knew she’d forgotten. He immediately reported the important news. "It’s been raining non-stop these last few days, right? So they’ve just been staying home and haven’t come out."
"But aside from eating and sleeping, they’re completely covered from head to toe the rest of the time. They don’t talk, either—they only communicate using their Light Brains. Super cautious!"
Lily Hart finished gnawing a chicken wing clean before speaking. "So that’s the countermeasure they came up with?"
Roman Rowe burst out laughing. "Yeah. They were even thinking about moving before, but then the storm hit, so this was all they could do."
’How boring. I thought they would’ve come up with some other trick.’
Once all their pawns within the base were eliminated, the Mysterious Clan would have to think twice before trying to stir up trouble. After all, they couldn’t kill people, or they would face sanctions.
Thinking of this, Lily Hart asked, "Do you guys know who the Sanctioner is?"
Seeing everyone’s blank looks, she explained, "They say the Mysterious Clan will be sanctioned if they kill a human, right? So who is this Sanctioner?"
Lily Hart, the naming genius.
Frost Shaw let out a chuckle. ’Sanctioner... it’s quite fitting.’
As a direct descendant of the Shaw Family, he had heard some secrets. Before he was expelled from the family, he had always heard the elders say that they must not harm humans.
The power gap was enormous. If they used even ten percent of their strength, a human might die, unable to withstand it.
Currently, the Shaw Family had three elders—the Second, Third, and Fourth. He’d heard that the Great Elder and the Fifth Elder were sanctioned because they couldn’t control their power and "accidentally killed" humans.
Within the four great families, there were members who had been sanctioned for "accidentally killing" humans. It was precisely because of this that they were exceptionally restrained and had to cultivate pawns to do their bidding.
His heritage from the Mysterious Clan also brought Frost Shaw benefits, such as a talent for cultivating his superpower that surpassed most people. He had reached the Eighth Rank at a young age.
He had heard many stories of people being sanctioned, but Frost Shaw had never seen a Sanctioner.
He answered truthfully, "I’ve never seen one."
’To be honest, I’ve often suspected it’s not a person, but a punishment sent down from the heavens.’
He voiced this thought out loud, and Lily Hart found it quite reasonable. After all, the members of the Mysterious Clan were already incredibly powerful. Just how mighty would the Sanctioner have to be?
Lily Hart couldn’t even imagine.
The rain stopped. The survivors who had been taking shelter in the sheds finally came out, carrying their bedrolls and squinting at the sun in the sky.
Before, when the sun was always out, they had only found it hot and stuffy. But now, after not seeing it for so long, they missed it dearly.
They returned to their own territories in twos and threes. Seeing the lottery shop still open put them in an inexplicably good mood, as if they were looking at a glimmer of hope.
Lily Hart called out to Diana Sharp and Tina Jacobs, "Come on, come on, let’s get the scratch-offs out!"
The three of them immediately got busy, covering the tabletops with scratch-off tickets. The lottery machine also started up, and customers flocked over. For a moment, it was as if they had gone back to the time before the storm.
During the storm, the survivors hadn’t been idle in the sheds. They would occasionally buy a few tickets from the machine or go to the factory for fast food.
They would also go to the convenience store for snacks. As long as you weren’t afraid of getting soaked, you were pretty much free to do as you pleased.
Even the few people who owned food machines continued to set up their stalls at night, rain or shine. Everyone tried their best to make some space for them.
All in all, life wasn’t too bad.
To thank Boss Hart for the sheds, they came over with their belongings in tow to buy scratch-offs the moment the rain stopped.
Lily Hart’s eyes crinkled into a smile. ’Making money feels so good!’
「Inside Central Command」
The plan was proceeding with great intensity. Elder Shaw held a paper list, looking at the names that had been crossed off one by one.
These were all people he had already spoken to. If they showed signs of wavering, he would put an ’X’ next to their name. If they were loyal to the Mysterious Clan, he would put a checkmark.
Elder Shaw folded the paper twice and tucked it into his pocket before walking out of his office.
In the hallway, he chatted with his assistant while fumbling in his pocket for something. He pulled out a pen and signed the document his assistant handed him.
The two of them walked out of the hallway and went downstairs.
After a long while, a door in the hallway opened. Someone poked their head out furtively, then quickly ran over, bent down, and picked something up off the floor.
After picking it up, they scurried back into the room as if nothing had ever happened.
Just as he reached downstairs and was about to get into the car, Elder Shaw patted his pocket and feigned surprise. "Huh? Where’s the list?"
His assistant was behind him, surrounded by ten tall, burly bodyguards. Several of them craned their necks to look. The assistant asked, "What list? Should we go back and look for it now?"
Elder Shaw pointed to two bodyguards. "You two go back the way we came and look for it. It’s just a sheet of A4 paper with the names of some management personnel on it."
The chosen bodyguards immediately turned around and went back to search along the route.
The assistant opened the car door. Elder Shaw sat in the back, flanked by two bodyguards. The driver was also a bodyguard, and the assistant sat in the front passenger seat.
The car behind them was also full of bodyguards. It was safe to say he was completely surrounded by them.
In an undisclosed location, Chad Yates held a sheet of A4 paper, reading it carefully. After a while, he called someone in and read out a long list of names...
...then said, "Take care of them."
’Some of these people hold high positions. We’re just going to ’take care of them’ like that?’ The more his confidant listened, the more shocked he became.
But he didn’t dare say anything, afraid of angering Chad Yates. Ever since his teeth were broken and his finger was severed, his temper had become especially foul. He was like a firecracker, ready to explode at the slightest provocation.
The confidant could only meekly agree. "Yes, sir."
...
Elder Shaw sat in the car, watching the scenery recede outside the window as he listened to his assistant’s report. "We couldn’t find it..."
He sighed. "Forget it. I’ll just write another copy." He dismissed the matter lightly. Hearing this, the assistant also assumed it wasn’t anything important.
Elder Shaw was in an excellent mood, the corners of his mouth slowly curling into a smile.
...
「The next day」
Lily Hart once again heard some explosive news from her customers.
’There’s so much news every single day,’ she thought. She turned off the climate control in her RV, and a gust of cold wind whistled in, making her unconsciously rub her arms.
The temperature had dropped.
Her ears were filled with the chattering of customers, as if gossiping helped them forget their troubles.
It started with that familiar phrase again. "Have you heard? Central Command is having a major personnel shake-up!"
"Huh? Why a shake-up? What happened?"
"I heard some people with crooked intentions showed up. Wasn’t there a huge storm these past few days? Buildings collapsed! Someone must have been embezzling funds!"
"I heard about that too! And it wasn’t just one building that collapsed, it was several! That’s definitely because of embezzlement. Otherwise, how could buildings fall apart so easily? It’s not like they’re made of paper!"
"Exactly! The higher-ups launched a strict investigation and immediately found a bunch of people with improper conduct. They’re being interrogated one by one right now. They’ll probably be removed from their posts!"
"Tsk, they’re completely useless. Just holding a position without doing any actual work!"
"Isn’t that the truth!"
