Chapter 291: Chapter 291: Removed from Office

Lily Hart listened with fascination, guessing that Elder Shaw and the others had finally taken action.

But she never expected... that the one carrying it out was Chad Yates.

He was the one who took the initiative to bring people in for interrogation, even proposing at a regular meeting that Central Command’s internal management was too lax and it was time for a thorough house-cleaning.

The other leaders all voiced their approval. Only Elder Shaw expressed his opposition, but to no avail.

This purge, instigated by Chad Yates, was proceeding with fiery intensity.

Every so often, news would spread that one department’s team leader or another’s supervisor had been dismissed.

Logan Holland, however, made a curious discovery. The dismissed individuals were almost all people who had been on the list and spoken with Elder Shaw—but they were the ones he had put a checkmark next to...

In other words, these were the people loyal to The Mysterious Clan, yet they were the ones being removed from their posts.

It took him a moment to realize this was Elder Shaw’s elaborate design—his own little scheme, which, to his surprise, had been put into action by a complete fluke.

Logan Holland snickered to himself. He had overestimated Chad Yates and underestimated Elder Shaw.

He couldn’t believe Chad Yates had fallen for it so easily. That move—getting an enemy to do your dirty work—was brilliantly executed by Elder Shaw!

Still, Elder Shaw hadn’t discussed this with them beforehand. He had simply sent them the list with its checkmarks and crosses.

Anyone looking at it for the first time would assume the checkmarks meant ’good’ and the crosses meant ’bad.’ But he had deliberately reversed it, and Chad Yates had fallen right into the trap.

The more Logan Holland thought about it, the more excited he got, until he actually laughed out loud during the meeting. As everyone turned to look, he quickly wiped the smile from his face and stared ahead, expressionless.

Chad Yates was in the middle of his speech when he was suddenly interrupted. After a brief pause, he continued, "I never expected Central Command to have so many parasites!"

"I’m afraid this is also a key reason for the building collapse the other day! With these parasites around, how can Central Command get on the right track? How can it ever hope to thrive?!"

"All department heads, return to your posts and properly supervise your people. Make sure no more mistakes are made!" he declared, his voice ringing with self-righteous authority.

’Anyone who didn’t know the truth would have actually believed him, when the biggest parasite of all was him!’

...

「The lottery shop.」

The day flew by, and soon it was dinnertime.

"HAHAHAHAHA! He really said that? The nerve of him!" Lily Hart laughed so hard the food nearly fell out of her mouth as she watched Logan Holland’s animated retelling from across the table.

Logan Holland nodded emphatically. "I know, right? You have no idea how many people were fired today!"

"How many?" Lily Hart asked curiously.

"At least twenty or thirty, and they were all key figures in their departments!" Logan Holland said, clicking his tongue in amazement.

"Whoa!" Lily Hart played along.

Elder Shaw hadn’t come this time. It was hard to say whether it was to avoid suspicion, or if he was in his room, "fretting" by himself to put on a show for any onlookers.

Lily Hart clicked her tongue. "Tsk. At this rate, it won’t be long before all his minions are gone! I wonder if Chad Yates will kick himself when he finds out the truth."

Logan Holland met her gaze. Picturing the scene, the two of them couldn’t help but burst out laughing again.

"He definitely will! But we’re also promoting our trusted subordinates to have them fill the vacancies as soon as possible. As far as anyone else is concerned, though, they’re neutral," Logan Holland said.

Lily Hart nodded, indicating she understood.

’Things seem to be progressing a little too smoothly.’

’It’s like an invisible hand is pushing everyone forward.’

After Logan Holland left, Frost Shaw couldn’t help but ask, "Why did Chad Yates suddenly pull a stunt like this?"

They didn’t know about the collaboration between Lily Hart and Elder Shaw. They were just confused. What was Chad Yates thinking? Had he suddenly lost his mind?

Lily Hart just smiled without explaining, saying mysteriously, "You’ll find out in due time."

Frost Shaw huffed lightly. ’Fine, don’t say anything then.’

The next day arrived in the blink of an eye. Lily Hart received a message from Elder Shaw, who said that most of the people on the list had been dealt with, leaving only a handful of difficult targets.

None of them had expected this step to proceed so smoothly.

The next step was to have the leader himself removed from power. But before they could make a move...

two assassination attempts occurred within the base, both targeting Chad Yates. An investigation that followed the clues revealed the culprits were all administrative staff who had been fired the previous day.

They were presumably resentful and felt they had to retaliate.

...

「The O’Malley Family Estate.」

Frank O’Malley tugged uncomfortably at his mask. He tried to take it off several times, but each time a look from Ash O’Malley stopped him. He lowered his head and began furiously typing on his Light Brain.

Ash O’Malley glanced down. The message on his Light Brain was from his dear, foolish little brother.

"When is this ever going to end! Didn’t they say we’d move once the rain stopped? I want to breathe some fresh air!"

He replied, "Follow the elders’ arrangements." It was a perfectly proper and respectful answer, but Frank O’Malley was sick of hearing it. He ripped off his mask and roared, "I won’t!"

The elders in the room instantly turned to look at him.

The Great Elder, though confused, was the first to reprimand him. "Put your mask on! Do you want everyone to see through you? And what is it that you ’won’t’ listen to?"

Frank O’Malley gave a sheepish laugh and put his mask back on.

The elders resumed their discussion of recent events.

The Great Elder’s expression was grim. "For some unknown reason, Central Command is in turmoil. Most of the people we planted inside have been rooted out, except for the old-timers who’ve been there for years."

The Fifth Elder sat in his wheelchair, cloaked in shadow. His voice was muffled. "I hear Chad Yates was the one who started it. Isn’t he one of the White Family’s people? What is the White Family trying to pull?"

The Fourth Elder shrugged, his tone glib. "Who knows? Maybe the White Family wants to rule the entire post-apocalyptic world."

The room fell silent. The White Family had always been ambitious. They had at least several candidates for leadership positions within the family; if one died, another would immediately take their place.

Ash O’Malley added quietly, "But there are also reports that people planted by the White Family have been removed as well..."

Silence fell again. The Fourth Elder ventured a guess, "Could it be that Chad Yates has betrayed the White Family?"

The Great Elder was the first to object. "Impossible. Have you forgotten about the White Family’s poison? Not even we have a cure for it. There’s no way Chad Yates has the antidote."

The Fourth Elder pursed his lips. "Then what do we do? Plant new people?"

"Of course we do! Otherwise, we’ll fall behind the other three families," the Fifth Elder snapped.

Ash O’Malley watched the elders debate, hesitant to interrupt, but finally spoke up. "I think... we should hold off on planting anyone for now. Let’s see how things develop first."

"We should also see how the other three families react. I don’t think this was the White Family’s idea. I think someone is pulling strings from the shadows, deliberately muddying the waters," Ash O’Malley analyzed.

"Agreed!" The Fourth Elder gave him an encouraging look.

"Ash has a good point," the Great Elder said, also encouragingly. Then, his tone shifted. "Frank, you should learn a thing or two from your older brother. You two are the only ones in the O’Malley Family’s younger generation. The future of the family will rest on your shoulders."

Frank O’Malley forced a bitter smile. ’This is the last thing I want to learn!’

The O’Malley Family was discussing the matter, and the other families were no exception, each having received reports from their own people inside Central Command.

Among them, the White Family was the most furious. They had been completely unaware of Chad Yates’s actions—kept entirely in the dark—and had only realized what was happening after the Shaw Family made a few sarcastic comments.
