Apocalypse: I'm Bound to a Mobile Lottery Shop
Chapter 315: The 8 AM ShiftChapter 315: Chapter 315: The 8 AM Shift
He just stood there, neck stiff and bare-chested, holding his clothes in his hand. He let her gaze wash over him, the scarlet in his eyes becoming harder and harder to conceal.
Lily Hart stared for a good while, blinked, and then let out a snort of laughter. "You’re being silly. Hurry up and put your clothes on. It’s chilly."
Owen Warren retorted, "Weren’t you going to give them to that old man?"
"Forget it. Yours are too big, he won’t be able to wear them," Lily Hart blurted out.
Though it was a perfectly normal sentence, it seemed to take on a different meaning in Owen Warren’s ears. It was unclear what he was thinking, but his face gradually turned beet red.
Lily Hart stared, voicing the question on her mind. "You zombies..." She scanned him up and down. "Are all of you this well-built?"
In her mind, the stereotype of a zombie was something covered in festering sores, missing arms and legs—hardly even human-shaped.
The corner of Owen Warren’s mouth twitched. Resisting the urge to laugh, he shot her a sideways glance. "The ones you’ve seen are all low-level zombies. The higher our rank, the more human we look."
"What’s more, I’m a Tenth-tier Zombie," he said confidently. "If I want to be, I *am* human. You wouldn’t be able to tell the difference at all."
"Ohhh~" Lily Hart’s suggestive gaze roamed over his body. "Just get dressed already! We get it, you have a great physique!"
Owen Warren suppressed the smile tugging at his lips. With a look of feigned reluctance, he slowly put his clothes on.
Lily Hart bought a few outfits from the mall, picked one out, and tossed it to Owen Warren. "Take this to him."
He was about to protest, but then he remembered Lily Hart had just complimented his physique, and the corners of his mouth turned up involuntarily.
’Fine. I’ll do you a favor and help you out.’
After the crazy old man took a shower and changed into clean clothes, he looked like a completely different person, much more full of life.
The only thing was, the cloth bag slung across his waist was still filthy, but he didn’t seem to mind in the slightest and continued to carry it with great care.
Lily Hart asked, "You’re not going to wash that bag?"
The crazy old man shook his head. "I’m not washing it."
"Fine, fine! Let’s go, let’s go, it’s almost eight o’clock." Lily Hart pulled him along, grabbing his sleeve this time.
’She’d only grabbed the bag before because it was the cleanest thing on his entire person...’
The two of them returned to the breakfast shop. Fortunately, there weren’t many customers yet, so Lily Hart had the old man hurry and flip all the switches.
The moment the switch for the steamer was flipped, Lily Hart could feel billows of hot steam rising.
Inside the electric cooker were tea eggs, and it looked like every single one was steeped in flavor, its aroma continuously wafting out.
On a small table sat a metal urn filled with hot soy milk, with disposable cups set out for use.
Once all the switches were on, the lively energy of a kitchen filled the air. The steamers billowed with steam, and the electric cooker did as well.
’Just looking at it brought a sense of bliss.’
At some point, the old man had already returned to his small room, staying completely out of sight.
Owen Warren had also appeared at some point, following them to the breakfast shop. Seeing customers, he rolled up his sleeves and jumped in to help.
Following Lily Hart’s directions, he moved the top few steamer baskets down—they were too high to reach easily—and then opened the first one.
A blast of hot steam washed over them, and even from the side, Lily Hart could smell the fragrant aroma of steamed buns.
A customer approached. "Boss Hart, what are the prices?"
’Crap, I haven’t even set the prices yet.’ She had no choice but to pull some numbers out of thin air. "The unfilled ones are three for one Crystal Core. The filled ones are two for one Crystal Core."
The steamer was opened to reveal all sorts of buns: soy-braised pork buns, green pepper and chicken buns, pickled vegetable buns, shiitake mushroom buns...
In two other small steamers were various breakfast items: sticky rice rolls, shrimp dumplings, shumai, zongzi, steamed dumplings, and more...
Piping hot and wonderfully fragrant, the customers were becoming entranced by the smell alone.
Lily Hart pointed to the smaller steamers. "These are two for one Crystal Core! It’s our grand opening sale, so the prices will go up tomorrow~"
Hearing this, the customers grew even more excited and started shouting their orders. "I’ll take two big meat buns!"
"I want two sticky rice rolls! And two shrimp dumplings and two shumai!"
"I-I-I want a cob of corn!"
Lily Hart had them form a proper line. "One at a time, everyone, please don’t rush."
Owen Warren was already quietly bagging the buns according to the customers’ orders.
Frost Shaw and Roman Rowe arrived as well. With their help, the breakfast service went even more smoothly.
Two people handled bagging the food for customers, one took the money, and one managed the tea eggs and soy milk.
Everyone had their role, and the process was orderly and efficient.
The customers couldn’t believe they could get breakfast, and a hot one at that!
They chatted quietly among themselves as they waited in line.
"What are you saying? Boss Hart didn’t have a breakfast shop back at Central Command?"
"So, you’re saying that we here at Steadfast Base are the first people in all of Cathaya to get to eat Boss Hart’s breakfast?"
"Oh my god, I have to post this online for everyone to see!"
"Looks to me like you just want to brag."
"Hehehe, you see right through me, but you don’t have to say it out loud! This breakfast shop really has so much variety!"
"Yeah, and the buns... I remember, this is that... what do you call it? Cantonese-style dim sum?"
"Stop, I’m going to cry. I never thought I’d get to see proper breakfast food again in the apocalypse. Boo hoo hoo~"
"And there’s soy milk! I’m definitely going to drink a ton of it!"
The customers still waiting in line were talking, and so were the ones who had already gotten their food and started eating.
"Oh my god, this is so good! The meat is so flavorful!"
"It is! This zongzi has meat *and* a salted egg yolk! It’s amazing!"
"Hey, can I trade you this zongzi for one of your sticky rice chicken wraps?"
The crazy old man secretly cracked open his door, peeking out with one eye. ’It’s so lively out there, so many people,’ he thought.
’Business is great. They look really busy. Should I go help out?’
’No, no. I’m too clean right now. That would just draw attention.’
’Honestly, that girl... Heaven knows how long it took me to cultivate such a filthy, disheveled appearance!’
Partway through, Seth, Stan Sterling, and Cynthia Whittaker joined the crew, and Owen Warren went back to the bathhouse to get on with his work.
The steamers, the electric cooker, and the metal urn seemed to be bottomless. No more than ten seconds after one layer was cleared out, a brand-new, full one would appear.
Lily Hart was getting tired just from tearing off bags for the customers. When the clock finally struck eleven, the buns in the steamers vanished in an instant.
She then checked the soy milk in the urn and the tea eggs in the cooker—both items looked completely untouched.
It was as if no soy milk or tea eggs had ever been there in the first place.
Lily Hart marveled internally. ’This is so user-friendly! It appears automatically and clears out automatically.’
’Good thing I didn’t turn on the rice noodle roll machine today. How would we ever have kept up?’
’No, no, this absolutely won’t work. I have to hire some staff.’
’If you can’t lead a team, you’ll just work yourself to death.’
Lily Hart had no intention of working herself to death. She called everyone back to the RV for a break.
At the same time, she informed the customers that the breakfast shop was closed for the day and to please return at eight the next morning.
Back in the RV, some of the group collapsed onto the seats while others immediately grabbed for water.
Cynthia Whittaker hesitated before finally speaking up. "In one hour... the hot pot restaurant is supposed to open."
"..." GULP. Lily Hart swallowed the water in her mouth.
’This is a nightmare,’ she thought. ’The work never ends.’
