Chapter 469: Chapter 480: Trouble
They didn’t pay much attention to the two newcomers in Veridia.
After all, Veridia was Sanctyr Base’s stronghold.
With Sanctyr Base’s reputation, countless people flocked to Veridia from afar every day, drawn by its name and hoping to join.
Even if they couldn’t join Sanctyr Base, life in Veridia was at least more peaceful and stable than life on the outside.
With countless people coming and going daily, the sudden arrival of two more was hardly enough to attract their attention.
Besides, their main mission was to watch for Miss Sterling’s whereabouts. The moment they spotted her, they were to notify everyone else immediately. They had to keep a tight watch on her and couldn’t let her slip from their sight again.
They heard that Boss Saint was already livid.
If they failed to find Miss Sterling again, they would all suffer for it.
So, after just a glance at the two, their eyes returned to scanning the crowd.
And so, right under their noses, Stella Sterling and Zane Xavier swaggered into Veridia.
Even though many people saw them, no one thought to associate them with Stella Sterling.
They didn’t recognize Stella Sterling, nor did they recognize Zane Xavier, who had once worked alongside them at the very same base.
Their appearances had changed so drastically that they looked like completely different people.
Inside the car, Zane Xavier sat in the driver’s seat, occasionally glancing at the rearview mirror as he drove.
He glanced at his own reflection—the face of a rough, rugged man—and his eyes still filled with amazement.
Then he glanced over at Miss Sterling in the passenger seat. She now looked no different from any other person on the street.
There was no trace of her former, stunning beauty. It was as if she were a completely different person.
If he hadn’t watched her transform with his own eyes, he would never have connected this tanned, coarse-skinned woman before him with Miss Sterling.
The difference was simply too great.
’It’s not just Miss Sterling. I’m like a whole new person, completely different from before.’
With a disguise like this, it wasn’t just the people at Sanctyr Base who barely knew him who wouldn’t recognize him—even if Boss Saint himself were standing right in front of him, he might not realize who he was.
No wonder Miss Sterling hadn’t been worried about being discovered by Sanctyr Base’s men when she chose to risk entering Veridia.
’So she had this kind of skill up her sleeve all along.’
’With a makeup technique this masterful, what was there to worry about?!’
’Now, they wouldn’t have to worry about being found at all. They could swagger all over Veridia, and no one would ever discover their true identities.’
The thought gave him an inexplicable thrill.
By now, the people at Sanctyr Base must have discovered his disappearance. They were probably looking for him just like they were looking for Miss Sterling.
’But in this disguise, they’d have a hard time finding me.’
’I could walk right under their noses, and they probably wouldn’t even give me a second glance.’ The thought made him faintly excited.
Still, he was amazed.
’Miss Sterling is incredible. This is basically the legendary Disguise Technique, isn’t it?’
"Focus on your driving, you’re about to hit someone!"
Stella Sterling opened her eyes and shot him a sidelong glance. He had been stealing looks at her from the very beginning. That was fine back in the desolate wilderness—there wasn’t another soul in sight, so there was no fear of an accident.
But things were different now. They had already entered Veridia.
Veridia was different from other abandoned cities. The population here was still very dense.
There was even an area here that maintained its pre-apocalypse appearance, with a trade district, a residential district, and even an entertainment district.
The place was crowded. A moment of carelessness behind the wheel could easily lead to hitting someone.
Startled by Stella Sterling’s warning, Zane Xavier snapped back to attention just in time to realize he had, in fact, almost hit someone.
Luckily, he reacted quickly and slammed on the brakes in time, otherwise...
His heart pounded with lingering fear at the thought, while the person he had almost hit was now staring at him with a mixture of shock and anger.
He breathed a sigh of relief. "Thanks for the warning, Miss Sterling. But... weren’t your eyes closed? How did you know?"
His voice was filled with amazement. Miss Sterling hadn’t opened her eyes at all, so how could she have known he was about to hit someone?
Stella Sterling glanced at him, a profound and mysterious look on her face. "Instinct."
With that, she crossed her arms, stared straight ahead, and resumed her air of a detached master.
Hearing this, Zane Xavier looked at her, his face full of admiration. "You’re amazing, Miss Sterling."
Then, Stella Sterling felt it again—a surge of power flowing into her body.
She smiled and raised an eyebrow at Zane Xavier, who was looking at her with unconcealed admiration.
Then she pointed past him. "Looks like trouble’s found you. You’d better figure out how to deal with it."
Zane Xavier turned to look, confused. Outside, the woman he’d nearly hit was furiously pounding on his driver’s side window.
Her mouth was opening and closing, and from the looks of it, she was cursing him out—and the words seemed pretty foul.
Zane Xavier looked apologetic. "Sorry, Miss Sterling. I’ve caused you trouble."
He rolled down the window, and the woman’s tirade immediately flooded the car.
"Goddammit! How the hell do you drive? Are you blind?! You almost hit me! Get your ass out here and let’s talk about how you’re going to compensate me!"
Zane Xavier looked at her apologetically. "I’m sorry, miss. That was my fault. Here, please take this candy as my apology. How about it?"
As he spoke, with a pained expression, he fumbled in his pocket for a long moment and finally pulled out half a bar of chocolate.
’This was my private stash from a mission. I’ve been rationing it for ages, breaking off a tiny piece whenever I could no longer resist.’
’What just happened was my fault, so I have to be the bigger person. Besides, this is the only thing I have on me to offer as compensation.’
As soon as she saw it, the woman’s eyes lit up, and she immediately snatched it.
Then, her gaze swept over the two people inside the car. She thrust her hand out again. "This isn’t enough! How is this supposed to compensate me? What, you think I’m a beggar?"
Stella Sterling smiled, her eyes narrowing slightly.
But she didn’t say anything, leaving the matter for Zane Xavier to handle.
Zane Xavier’s expression darkened. "Are you sure?"
’Do I look like a pushover to you?’
