Apocalypse Rebirth: Crazy from Day One

Chapter 470 - 481: Greed Never Ends Well

Chapter 470: Chapter 481: Greed Never Ends Well

In this apocalypse, anything edible—even a moldy piece of bread—was an incredibly precious item.

The kind of thing people would fight to the death over.

Let alone the half a bar of chocolate in his hand. Sometimes, a single bite could sustain a person’s energy for a while, increasing their chances of survival.

Sometimes, sugary foods like this were even more valuable than other provisions.

If he had anything else on him, he really wouldn’t have parted with it. He couldn’t very well use Miss Sterling’s things to compensate the woman.

Besides, he hadn’t even hit her. If it weren’t for Miss Sterling’s presence and his desire to avoid trouble, he wouldn’t have been so accommodating.

But he never expected the woman to be so greedy. She was getting something for nothing and still wasn’t satisfied. She actually wanted more!

The woman saw the anger in Zane Xavier’s eyes, and for a moment, she hesitated.

But in the next instant, her expression hardened again. "Of course I’m sure!" she said fiercely. "You almost hit me! Scared me so bad my legs went soft. How is this little thing enough?!"

As she spoke, she shot a look to someone not far off, signaling for her companion to come over.

’These two can still drive a car, so their situation might be pretty good,’ she thought. ’And there are only two of them. They look like a couple of pushovers.’

’Otherwise, why would he have offered to compensate me the moment I opened my mouth?’

’Anyone else would have started a fight by now. The fact that they’re so reasonable must mean they’re easy targets.’

’So, either that’s just their personality, or they know they aren’t strong enough and don’t want a confrontation.’

’Or maybe they just want to avoid trouble, which is why they’re trying to resolve this so quickly.’

’All of her theories worked in her favor. Pushovers like this were rare these days; she had to seize the opportunity to squeeze more out of them.’

’Besides, these two drove in from outside. They’re probably new to Veridia.’

’People like that wouldn’t understand the power dynamics in Veridia and probably don’t have any backing.’

’We’re different. We’ve been getting by in Veridia for a long time. I bet these people wouldn’t dare to cross us.’

"If you think it’s not enough, then forget it."

Zane Xavier snatched the chocolate right back from her hand. He moved so fast she didn’t even have time to react.

She stared at Zane Xavier, dumbfounded. Then she roared, "How dare you! You got a death wish? Give it back, or this lady won’t be so nice in a minute!"

"I tried to be nice, but you had to push it! You really think I’m a pushover? You wouldn’t listen to reason, so now you get nothing! Get the hell out of my sight!"

Zane Xavier cursed right back at her.

His tone was much fiercer now, nothing like the accommodating man from before.

The woman froze for a second, apparently not expecting him to switch so quickly.

’Just a moment ago, he was so reasonable, offering to compensate me right away,’ she thought. ’I really thought he’d be easy to handle.’

’But now, it was like he was a completely different person.’

Seeing that he was no longer playing along, she turned her head to look at Stella Sterling, who was sitting inside the car. "Hey! Your companion almost hit me with the car. Aren’t you going to say something? Since we’re both women, I’ll give you a chance. Hand over that chocolate and add a little something extra for compensation, and we’ll call it even. Otherwise, we won’t be so nice anymore."

She stood her ground in front of the car window. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw her companions approaching, which made her feel even more confident.

Stella Sterling turned to look at her, a small smile playing on her lips. "It’s not good to be too greedy. You might lose your life, you know."

’It was true that Zane Xavier had almost hit someone,’ Stella thought. ’Even though he didn’t actually make contact, he was willing to compensate her, so I didn’t say anything.’

’But this person was a little too greedy. And greedy people often end up with nothing.’

’Did she think this was before the apocalypse?’

’This was the apocalypse—an apocalypse where people killed without batting an eye.’

’If they had run into someone more ruthless, forget compensation—she might have lost her life on the spot.’

’I’ve mellowed out a lot myself. Otherwise...’

’In a situation like this, she wouldn’t even have the chance to be standing here talking to me.’

The woman outside the window’s face darkened, surprised that this woman was just as firm and was even mocking her. "Looks like you’re not planning on compensating me then!"

"I’ll give you one more chance to get lost," Zane Xavier said. "Otherwise, forget compensation. You should be worried about your life."

This was supposed to be his mess to handle. Now that the disturbance had reached Miss Sterling, he was extremely embarrassed, and his tone grew even more impatient.

If they weren’t inside Veridia, where he didn’t want to cause trouble, he wouldn’t have been so civil with them.

’He wasn’t a good person, either.’

’Trying to fleece me? She had no idea who she was dealing with!’

"Fine, fine, fine! In that case, don’t blame us for being impolite! Everyone, get ’em! Wreck their car, and everything inside is ours! As for these two, take care of them, then we’ll deliver them to Sanctyr Base. We’ll get a nice reward for them."

The woman laughed, furious. Seeing that all her companions had arrived, she became much more brazen than before.

Zane Xavier wasted no more words. He pulled a gun from his pocket and aimed it straight at the woman.

Then, he fired a single shot and ended her.

The arrogant smile was still frozen on her face as she fell stiffly to the ground.

Stella Sterling closed her eyes and said nothing, leaving it all for Zane Xavier to handle.

’She felt no sympathy for the woman.’

’The apocalypse was a world where only the strong survived. The woman could have walked away unharmed and with some compensation.’

’And the woman herself hadn’t suffered any loss. After all, as she’d just noted, Zane Xavier had reacted quickly and hadn’t even touched her.’

’The woman got half a bar of chocolate for free, which was already a great deal for her. A shame she was too greedy.’

’This was the fate of the greedy and powerless in the apocalypse.’

The sudden gunshot silenced the surroundings for a moment.

The dead woman’s accomplices, who had been rushing forward, froze in place at the sight. They didn’t advance another step.

Someone in the crowd with sharp eyes spotted the gun in Zane Xavier’s hand and shouted, "That gun is from Sanctyr Base! They’re Sanctyr people! No wonder they dared to open fire here!"

"It’s over, it’s over, those people are finished! They actually tried to extort someone from Sanctyr Base! Isn’t that a death wish? They totally deserved it!"
