Their leader must have had his reasons for telling them to do this.
Besides, the newcomers had already settled in their territory. They were practically one of them now, so it was only natural to look out for them a bit more.
The burly man in the lead handed the items to one of his men, then walked over to Stella Sterling and Zane Xavier.
"Is something wrong?"
Zane Xavier stopped what he was doing, looked up at the man, and walked over to stand before him, watching him silently.
’Could I have misjudged the situation? Is he going back on his word and getting ready to attack us?’
Stella Sterling looked at the man, but she wasn’t as tense as Zane Xavier.
’I heard the entire conversation between him and his men just now.’
’So he probably isn’t here to cause trouble. He might have noticed that I gave him more food than we agreed on and is coming over to thank me.’
Just as she’d expected, the man looked at Zane Xavier’s defensive posture but didn’t seem offended. "No need to worry, young man. I mean no harm. The name’s Hunter Night, and I pride myself on being a man of honor. You don’t have to worry about me taking your things and then turning on you!"
Zane Xavier wasn’t embarrassed that the man had seen right through him.
’I’ve heard of this guy before, and his reputation is decent enough.’
’But you can never be too careful. We don’t know each other well. The trade is done, so it’s best if we just leave each other alone. For him to suddenly come over now... who knows what he’s really thinking?’
’There’s nothing wrong with being on guard.’
He smiled. "I’m not questioning your honor, friend. But is there a reason you’ve come over?"
Hunter Night smiled. "I came to thank you."
Upon hearing this, Zane Xavier’s face filled with confusion. ’Thank them?’
’We haven’t done anything. Why on earth would he thank us?’
In an instant, the guard he had just started to let down went right back up, and he watched the man with suspicion.
’Is he saying this on purpose to make us lower our guard so he can attack?’
Just as he was lost in his suspicions, Miss Sterling, who was standing beside him, spoke up. "There’s no need for thanks. We just hope that we can all coexist peacefully while we’re here."
Zane Xavier didn’t understand why she would say that, but Stella Sterling knew exactly why.
’The food I gave him was much more than we’d agreed on. He must have noticed and came over specifically to express his thanks.’
’That little bit of food is nothing to me. I don’t need his gratitude. I just hope he’ll behave himself from now on and not suddenly get any crazy ideas or let greed get the better of him and decide to attack us.’
’If that happens, we won’t be able to maintain even this superficial peace.’
Hunter Night was even more surprised to hear her say that, but he kept a smile on his face. "Don’t worry, that won’t happen!"
He understood the implication in her words.
Even if she hadn’t said anything, he wouldn’t have done that. As long as these two didn’t do anything to harm him or his brothers, he wouldn’t cause trouble for them.
Besides, they knew how the world worked. He was more than happy to associate with people who were both generous and smart, and he had no desire to make an enemy of them unless it was absolutely necessary.
Stella Sterling nodded. "That’s for the best. I hope you remember what you just said. Consider it a friendly piece of advice."
Hunter Night froze for a moment. The ordinary-looking young woman before him was smiling as she spoke, yet for some reason, he detected a sense of danger in her words.
His heart jolted, and the way he sized her up became much more serious.
’These two look quite ordinary. There’s nothing special about them. At a glance, they’re just like any other survivors in this apocalypse.’
’I didn’t pay them much attention before, but at this moment, I suddenly feel that these two might not be so simple. At least, not as simple as they appear on the surface.’

’Miss Sterling hasn’t had much contact with them. The most she did was give them the food for the trade, so the issue must lie there.’
’Did Miss Sterling give them extra?’

They watched Zane Xavier warily. ’This kid isn’t thinking of going back on the deal and trying to take the stuff back, is he?’
Sensing their glares, Zane Xavier sighed. ’Whatever. Now isn’t the time to start a conflict with these people.’
’Miss Sterling already gave it to them. There’s nothing I can say now.’
Seeing him look away, the other men turned their heads as well.
Suspicion rose in their hearts. They worried that Zane Xavier, unhappy with the exchange, might try to do something behind their backs.
’Looks like we’ll have to remind the boss to be on guard against these two.’
Hunter Night nodded at Stella Sterling. "Well, I won’t disturb you two any longer. Get some rest. If you need anything in the future, you can come find us. We’ll help if we can."
After saying this, Hunter Night turned and left.
Zane Xavier watched him go with a puzzled expression. ’The leader of the Three Tigers Corps... he actually seems pretty reasonable.’
’But I know better. He seems like a decent guy, but he wouldn’t be this nice to us for no reason.’
’It has to be because Miss Sterling gave them extra food!’
He felt a sharp pang of regret at the thought.
