Apocalypse Rebirth: Crazy from Day One
Chapter 476 - 485: Like Face-ChangingChapter 476: Chapter 485: Like Face-Changing
’What a spendthrift! An absolute spendthrift!’
’Wouldn’t it be better to keep the food for ourselves? They only asked for a pound, so why give them extra?’
Zane Xavier was so anxious he nearly slapped his thigh.
He was truly heartbroken. He didn’t care about other things, but food was more precious than anything right now.
If the person giving the stuff away hadn’t been Miss Sterling, he would have been tempted to accuse her, to call her a spendthrift.
He took several deep breaths, though they came out ragged. He pinched himself hard a few times before he managed to look somewhat calm.
He forced himself to calm down and didn’t immediately rush up to question Miss Sterling.
’Calm down, calm down. You’re her subordinate now. You have to follow orders. Impulsiveness is the devil.’
Zane Xavier kept consoling himself.
However, he had no idea how contorted his expression was at that moment. He stood there alone after Hunter Night had left, sighing one moment, stomping his foot the next, then furrowing his brow again.
He looked as if he was wrestling with some great burden.
Stella Sterling glanced over at him and saw his expression constantly shifting—annoyed one second, furious the next, then pained, and then resigned.
His expressions changed so rapidly, it was like watching a performance. It amused Stella Sterling.
’This guy has some hidden talents. He can even put on such an entertaining show.’
’Looks like recruiting him was really worth it.’
’Not only is he highly skilled, but he can also perform a face-changing magic trick for me when I’m bored.’
’I’ll never be bored again!’
Stella Sterling didn’t even bother to interrupt him. She just leaned against a nearby surface, arms crossed, and watched him quietly. She was curious to see what he was up to.
After some time, Zane Xavier seemed to have finally mentally prepared himself. His expression calmed, and he opened his eyes.
The first thing he saw when he opened his eyes was Miss Sterling standing nearby, watching him with a teasing look in her eyes, arms crossed.
He froze for a moment, then smiled. "Miss Sterling, why are you looking at me like that? Do you have any orders for me?"
"If you have any orders, please just give them. I’ve said it before, from now on, I’m your most loyal lackey. I’d be willing to climb a mountain of swords or plunge into a sea of fire for you, without a single complaint!"
The words rolled off his tongue effortlessly, and the expression on his face was utterly sincere.
The look in his eyes as he gazed at Stella Sterling was incredibly clear and pure.
Stella Sterling watched him with amusement. "Climbing a mountain of swords or plunging into a sea of fire won’t be necessary. However, I am curious about what you were just thinking. That range of expressions... Tsk tsk tsk, it was quite the spectacle."
Hearing Stella Sterling’s words, Zane Xavier’s expression changed instantly.
’What I was just thinking had to do with Miss Sterling... Was I that obvious? Did she see everything?’
So, he looked at Stella Sterling tentatively. "Miss Sterling, did I say anything just now?"
’I didn’t actually say what I was thinking out loud, did I?’
’After all, Miss Sterling is my boss now. If I was questioning her decision in my head and she somehow heard it, that would be disastrous.’
’Even if she isn’t petty, no leader likes their underlings talking behind their back!’
Seeing his expression, Stella Sterling raised an eyebrow. It looked like he was thinking about something he didn’t want her to know.
She shook her head. "You didn’t say anything, but your expressions were quite a show. Shifting from one thing to the next like that. It was pretty amusing to watch."
When Zane Xavier heard Stella Sterling say he hadn’t said anything, he let out a huge sigh of relief.
’Thank goodness, thank goodness. I didn’t say my thoughts out loud.’
After all, while he didn’t dare say anything to Miss Sterling, he had certainly been complaining in his head.
Once he relaxed, his smile broadened, and he chuckled. "I was just suddenly thinking about some things from the past, so I got a little sentimental."
"I don’t believe you."
Stella Sterling eyed him suspiciously, not believing a single word he said.
’Getting all sentimental out of the blue? Right now, of all times?’
She narrowed her eyes at him. "You weren’t cursing me out in your head, were you?"
The moment he heard that, Zane Xavier nearly jumped out of his skin. His tone was frantic. "No, absolutely not! I am completely loyal to you, Miss Sterling. I have nothing but the utmost admiration for you! How could I possibly curse you in my head?"
He denied it so quickly, so eagerly, that it only made Stella Sterling more suspicious.
Seeing her obvious look of disbelief, Zane Xavier’s face fell.
He backed away from Stella Sterling a little. "Miss Sterling... if I tell you, you can’t get mad at me!"
Stella Sterling gave him a half-smile. "That depends on what you were saying about me in your head."
Stella Sterling paused for a moment before continuing, "Of course, if you tell the truth, I’ll handle it depending on the situation. But if you don’t... hehehe..."
Stella Sterling’s parting laugh sent a shiver down Zane Xavier’s spine.
He knew he must have been too obvious. If he didn’t say something, Miss Sterling clearly wouldn’t believe him. So, he said, "I just thought that Miss Sterling gave them too much food, so I was just staging a small protest in my head."
"But you have to believe me, Miss Sterling! I really don’t have a problem with it. I just felt heartbroken about the food, but I would never dream of going against your decision."
As if worried Stella Sterling wouldn’t believe him, he kept his eyes fixed on her as he spoke.
His words came out in a quick, urgent rush!
’So that’s why his expression was changing nonstop just now, like a face-changing magic trick?’
The corner of Stella Sterling’s mouth twitched.
But then, she understood what he was thinking. After all, he had left Sanctyr Base because of her.
Since he was following her now, it was only natural for him to worry about his own future, about whether he’d have enough to eat.
If he was following her but couldn’t even get a full meal, how could he not be worried?
Zane Xavier didn’t know how much food she had on hand. Seeing her give away so much, he was afraid they wouldn’t have enough for themselves later. That was a normal reaction.
For her, however, the amount she’d given away was nothing at all.
Never mind all the food she had stockpiled before; just the amount of grain that ripened daily in her space was immense.
As long as she was alive, she and her people would never have to worry about food.
If she hadn’t had that level of confidence, she wouldn’t have taken out so much food to help those people during the frequent earthquakes earlier.
