Ye Xuan was responsible for the eastern and northern areas, while Chu Miao searched the western and southern districts.

Neither needed to walk through every street.

Crystal cores flew out from beneath ash, collapsed buildings, and destroyed vehicles before gathering in the air.

The sight was magnificent.

Millions of crystal cores of different colors formed several rivers above City S.

Chu Miao sent them directly into large purification pools inside the Soul Ring.

The pools had been prepared long ago for cleaning crystal cores collected from large zombie hordes.

As the crystal cores fell into the diluted spiritual spring water, black impurities spread through the pools before being purified.

The process continued for almost two hours.

By the time they finished, every part of City S had been searched at least twice.

Chu Miao and Ye Xuan met again on top of a partially collapsed building.

She took out several containers and arranged them according to the levels of the crystal cores inside.

Level-one and level-two crystal cores were the most numerous.

There were also many level-three and level-four cores.

However, from level five onward, the numbers dropped drastically.

This was normal to a certain extent because high-level zombies were rarer.

What was abnormal was the number of level-eight crystal cores.

There were only twelve.

Ye Xuan had personally detected more than twenty level-eight zombies before beginning his breakthrough. That did not include those hidden beyond the range of his attention.

They had also found only one level-nine crystal core.

"Could some crystal cores have been destroyed by the lightning?" Ye Xuan asked, although he already knew the answer.

"Some low-level cores might have shattered," Chu Miao replied. "But high-level crystal cores are stronger. Even if a few were destroyed, it is impossible for so many to disappear."

She picked up the level-nine crystal core.

After examining it, she shook her head.

"This zombie advanced recently. Its crystal core is unstable and contains many impurities."

That meant it could not have been the strongest zombie in City S.

A stronghold containing tens of millions of zombies and several intelligent commanders should have had more than one level-nine zombie.

There might even have been a zombie approaching level ten.

Yet, no such crystal core had been found.

Ye Xuan looked at the city covered in ash.

"What about the number of level-seven cores?"

"Also too low," Chu Miao replied. "If we compare the numbers to the zombie hordes that attacked the survivor bases, then at least several hundred high-level crystal cores are missing."

This was no longer a coincidence.

The strongest zombies had truly evacuated before the tribulation began.

Ye Xuan thought back to the intelligent zombies hiding inside the buildings.

At that time, he had assumed they were observing him because they suspected a trap.

Now, it appeared that they had been buying time.

Some remained behind to watch him while the most important commanders escaped through the underground tunnels.

"Someone was directing them," he said.

Chu Miao nodded.

"An ordinary intelligent zombie would not abandon millions of its kind so decisively."

Even if zombies did not have the same emotions as humans, they still desired strength.

Tens of millions of zombies represented an enormous army.

Sacrificing them without hesitation meant that preserving the high-level zombies was more important.

Perhaps those who escaped held special positions.

Or perhaps they carried information that could not be allowed to fall into human hands.

"Can we follow their traces?" Ye Xuan asked.

"We can try, but too much time has passed. Moreover, the lightning tribulation disturbed the energy in the entire region."

Chu Miao stored the sorted crystal cores inside the Soul Ring.

Her gaze then shifted toward another section of the city.

"There is still one place we haven’t searched."

"The deepest underground chamber," Ye Xuan said.

Unlike the other underground passages, that chamber had been sealed behind several reinforced walls.

The lightning tribulation had damaged its outer structure but had not completely exposed it.

Strangely, Ye Xuan’s divine sense could not see everything inside.

Something was interfering with it.

"Whatever the intelligent zombies were hiding should be there," Chu Miao said.

The two flew toward the location.

When they landed, Ye Xuan raised his hand and moved the rubble aside.

Beneath it was a narrow staircase leading underground.

Unlike the earlier entrance, this staircase was clean.

There were no bloodstains, rotten flesh, or disorderly footprints.

Only a few sets of footprints could be seen, all moving in the same direction.

At the bottom of the stairs stood another metal door.

Several unfamiliar symbols had been carved into its surface.

They were not words, but they appeared too orderly to be random scratches.

Chu Miao examined them closely.

"They resemble a formation."

"But there is no spiritual energy," Ye Xuan replied.

"Not all formations use spiritual energy."

Chu Miao reached toward the door but stopped before touching it.

A nearly invisible red light flashed beneath one of the symbols.

Ye Xuan immediately pulled her back and stood in front of her.

At the same time, a powerful bolt of lightning struck the metal door.

BOOM!

The door exploded inward.

A wave of dark energy rushed out of the chamber, carrying a terrifying pressure.

Ye Xuan raised an ice barrier to block it.

When the dark energy collided with the ice, it released a sharp sizzling sound and began corroding the barrier.

Chu Miao’s eyes narrowed.

"Death energy."

"No," Ye Xuan said as he reinforced the barrier with lightning. "It contains something else."

The dark energy struggled for several seconds before being purified by the lightning.

Silence returned to the underground passage.

Ye Xuan lowered the ice barrier.

Beyond the destroyed door was a large chamber.

The walls were covered with maps, symbols, and markings.

At the center stood a long table surrounded by several chairs.

Everything inside had been arranged almost like a military command center.

Chu Miao and Ye Xuan exchanged solemn looks.

The intelligent zombies had not merely gathered in City S.

They had been planning something.
