Apocalypse Transmigration - The Card Captor System
Chapter 134: No more holding backLeo reappeared on the roof of a nearby building, his boots splashing into a shallow puddle.
He turned toward the distant entrance of Rendell City. Far away, thick smoke billowed into the gray sky.
His eyes went cold. He pulled out his binoculars and focused the lenses on the horizon. His expression darkened at the sight. A black mass stretched as far as the eye could see, gathered like a swarm at the city gates. He was trapped inside for now. It was better to wait and see how the situation unfolded.
Lowering his binoculars, Leo felt a solitary drop of water strike his cheek. He glanced up at the bruised, heavy clouds.
Drip.
Drip.
A moment later, the skies opened up. A heavy downpour washed over the city, drenching the abandoned streets below in seconds. He stared into the rain for a brief moment before turning his back to the wind.
"Void Walk."
His figure vanished from the rooftop.
Rendell City Military Base
The sheer scale of the attack caught the military off guard, but they had prepared for this exact nightmare. Their response came without hesitation.
Massive steel barricades slammed into place around the city limits, backed by rows of hidden traps. The first wave of zombies crashed hard against the defensive line. The soldiers held their ground, pushing the horde back for a brief window of time, but the dead kept coming. The numbers swelled, turning the clash into a brutal stalemate.
Inside the command center, reports poured in without pause.
"Sir!" A soldier stood at attention before Colonel Adrian. "We’ve managed to hold back the horde for now. But their numbers are continuing to increase. At this rate, the defensive line will eventually be breached."
Adrian nodded calmly.
"What about the Rizen Group? Have they arrived?"
The soldier shook his head. "No, sir. They’re still several miles away. Their leader informed us that they would arrive in Rendell City by dawn."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
"By dawn..."
He pushed himself out of his chair and shrugged off his heavy military coat.
"Alright. Then we’ll hold the horde until dawn." His jaw set in a hard line. "Give the order. Bring out the Energy Cannons."
The soldier’s eyes went wide. "Sir?"
Adrian walked toward the exit, not looking back. "This is the final battle. We’re done holding back. Deploy them."
The soldier snapped a sharp salute. "Yes, sir!"
Adrian stepped out of the command center, heading straight for the frontline.
Minutes later, the military unveiled its heavy artillery. Massive technological cannons rolled toward the barricades, their weight groaning against large steel platforms. Four soldiers manned each weapon.
One soldier cracked open the chamber, loading glowing nucleus crystals into the core.
"Energy output has reached thirty percent!"
Another soldier raised a hand. "Stop there! We’re short on nucleus crystals! We need to conserve our supply!"
The loader cursed under his breath. "Damn that thief who stole a huge amount of our crystals. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be worrying about conserving ammunition."
"Shut up!" A third soldier gripped the firing mechanism tight. "Focus on your job!"
A fourth soldier stood by, scanning the field through binoculars. "Three o’clock! Target approaching!"
The team hauled the heavy barrel into position.
"Charge the cannon!"
"Charging!"
The machine let out a deep hum. A heavy wave of energy rippled outward, stirring the dust around them.
"Charging complete!"
The man on the trigger yelled over the noise, "FIRE!"
BOOM!
A blinding beam tore across the dark field and smashed into the earth. The resulting explosion rattled the very ground, kicking up a storm of dust and debris. As the wind carried the smoke away, a massive crater sat empty in the middle of the zombie horde. Everything caught in the blast radius had turned to ash.
The soldiers stared at the sheer destruction.
"Good hit! Recharge the cannon! Prepare the next shot!"
All along the defensive line, similar shouts rang out. The Energy Cannons unleashed hell, raining destructive beams down upon the encroaching dead. Entire swaths of zombies were wiped from existence. Yet, the victory was brief. More infected surged forward, dragging their feet over the scorched earth to fill the gaps.
For the first time since the siege began, the endless tide was actually losing ground. Still, Adrian’s grim expression didn’t waver. He knew the long night was just beginning.
Several Kilometers Away
A massive, fortress-like vehicle rolled steadily across the wasteland, pointed toward Rendell City. Inside one of its lavish, soundproofed compartments, a handsome, golden-haired man rested in a plush armchair, his eyes shut in quiet thought.
A green-haired boy stood behind him, barely reaching five feet tall. Three apple slices hovered around the boy, tumbling in mid-air as he casually juggled them with a thought.
"Captain."
The golden-haired man opened his eyes. The green-haired boy snatched one of the floating apples from the air.
"We could have reached Rendell City within a few hours. Why did you tell the military that we wouldn’t arrive until dawn?"
The captain offered a faint, chilling smile. "Because the military needs to suffer first."
The boy raised an eyebrow, prompting the man to explain.
"Only when they know desperation will we be able to get a higher price from this deal."His gaze went cold. "Let them exhaust their soldiers. Let them waste their resources. Once they realize they cannot win alone..." The smile returned to his lips. "Only then will they understand the value of our help."
A third man in the room gave a slow nod. The overhead light caught the dull shine of his completely metallic right arm.
"As expected of the Captain. You understand these people very well."
The golden-haired man shook his head. "No. This is the wisdom of Lord Rizen." Deep respect softened his sharp features. "Lord Rizen understands this world far better than anyone. It is only because of his protection that the people under his command have survived this long."
The cyborg clenched his metal fist, the internal gears whining in the quiet room. "And yet... They remain unwilling to submit. They still believe they can oppose Lord Rizen."
The captain’s smile faded.
"They’re frightened. They don’t yet understand what is coming." He turned his attention to the window, staring out into the dark where Rendell City sat under siege. "But they will."
The metallic-armed man nodded. "Once the alien threat is dealt with..."
The golden-haired man raised a single hand, cutting him off.
"You don’t have to think about all this. Just focus on the mission."
