The modified jeep roared to life, its engine growling in tandem with a deafening drumbeat blasting from the mounted speakers and megaphones.
BOOM!
BOOM!
BOOM!
The heavy rhythm echoed across the battlefield.
Standing in the back, Rex rode the jeep straight toward the frontlines. At the approaching rumble, the soldiers stationed near the barricades fell back to follow their orders.
"Clear the area!"
"Move!"
The troops scrambled out of the way, leaving a wide open path ahead of the vehicle. Rex swayed slightly to the powerful, thumping bass. He raised one hand in the air, his eyes scanning the battlefield: the massive zombie horde, the strained steel barricades, the countless bodies pressing against the military’s defensive line. His fingers twitched, mimicking a maestro conducting a concert.
As the jeep reached the cleared zone, he brought his hand down.
"Party Bash."
The moment the words met the speakers, the drumbeat spiked into a terrifying sonic boom. The air itself shattered. A shockwave blasted the nearest zombies backward, launching their bodies dozens of meters into the sky. The lingering force knocked the distant infected off their feet, wiping away a massive pocket of the battlefield.
But Rex wasn’t finished. He snapped his fingers, and the music shifted.
TRUNGGG!
A sharp, heavy guitar riff ripped through the speakers. Rex raised both hands, his playful demeanor vanishing.
"DEATH’S SYMPHONY..."
"FINAL VERSE"
The wail of the guitar grew harsher. Violent. Deadly.
"DANCE OF BLADES"
Rex slashed his hands through the air as if striking invisible strings.
SHING!
SHING!
SHING!
Waves of pure sound shot forward, tearing into the airborne zombies.
SPLAT!
SPLAT!
SPLAT!
The flying infected were sliced apart in midair. Limbs, heads, and chunks of flesh rained down. In mere seconds, a massive, bloody path lay open in front of the barricades. Rex lowered his hands, a proud smirk touching his lips.
Then, his eyes rolled back.
"Eh?"
He slumped forward, his body going completely limp.
"Boss is out!"
The driver snatched Rex by the collar before he could tumble over the edge. Gripping the wheel, he threw the jeep into a hard spin.
"RETREAT!"
The vehicle tore away from the frontlines. Behind them, the sea of undead surged forward, eager to fill the fresh gap.
"NOW!" Adrian’s voice rang across the battlefield.
A unit of heavy shield-bearers pushed forward, forming a steel wall to secure the cleared path. Adrian trailed right behind them. A strange metallic box sat strapped to his back. He stared up at the dark, roiling clouds and raised his hand.
Click.
He pushed a button. The box vibrated, emitting a strange hum.
BZZZZZZT!
The spiral antenna whirred to life. High above, the sky darkened even further, answering the call.
BOOOOOOM!
Thunder rattled the ground. Adrian tilted his head up just as a massive bolt of lightning split the sky.
CRACK!!
It struck the antenna dead center.
BOOOOOOM!!
The blast of electricity surged through the metallic box, wrapping Adrian in a blinding halo of fierce arcs. A mechanical voice buzzed in his ear.
[Power Output: 120%]
Warning alarms immediately sounded from the box.
Adrian’s expression darkened.
"So it really exceeded the limit."
He clenched his fist.
CRACKLE!
Electricity danced along his arm. He threw both hands wide.
"HIGH VOLTAGE"
ZZZZZZZZZZT!!
A massive current erupted from his chest, sweeping across the battlefield. The lightning leaped from one zombie to the next—ten, a hundred, a thousand. Every infected touched by the spark locked up in rigid spasms. Their flesh charred black, thick smoke pouring from their gaping mouths.
Thud.
Thud.
Thud.
Waves of the undead crashed to the earth. The thick stench of burnt meat choked the air, leaving a massive crater of scorched bodies in the horde.
"ROOOOAR!"
A deafening bellow shook the ground behind Adrian. Bear charged into the fray, a massive war hammer resting on his shoulder.
"Half-Beast Transformation!"
Bear’s body expanded, tearing his clothes. Coarse fur erupted from his skin as his muscles swelled to monstrous proportions. His jaw stretched, making room for rows of sharp, gleaming fangs. In a matter of breaths, a towering humanoid bear loomed over the battlefield.
Gripping his colossal hammer with both massive paws, Bear went into a vicious spin.
"ROOOOAR!"
The heavy steel head swept through the horde.
BOOOOOOM!!
Zombies shattered on impact, their bodies launching into the air like baseballs struck by a bat. The giant beast-man marched deeper into the swarm, crushing everything in his path and forcing the tide of undead backward.
Elsewhere, a second armored vehicle tore onto the battlefield, splitting away from Bear’s position to flank another section of the horde. Inside sat the remaining members of the Freedom Convoy.
Nina glanced at Grandpa Jiro.
"Grandpa..."
"Are you sure you don’t want to wear the armor?"
Grandpa Jiro shook his head.
"No need."
"It will only restrict my movements."
The old man rolled his shoulders, his face showing absolutely no sign of fear.
Valentine stood near the front of the vehicle, her sharp gaze sweeping over the crew.
"You all remember the plan, right?"
Everyone nodded.
"We’ll split into two groups."
"The first group will drop Atlas in the middle of the battlefield."
"After that, fight opponents suitable for your abilities."
"The second group will do the same."
She locked eyes with them, her voice stern.
"One thing."
"After Atlas transforms..."
"Stay out of his way."
The crew sobered up at the warning. Valentine turned her attention to the young man.
"Atlas."
"Are you ready?"
Atlas gave an innocent nod.
"Yes."
Valentine gave a final confirming nod. She checked her gear one last time.
"Second group."
"Move out."
Valentine vaulted from the moving vehicle. Grandpa Jiro and Cyrus leaped after her, and the three landed dead center in the swarming undead.
Valentine drew twin curved blades.
SHING!
A severed head tumbled through the air.
SHING!
Then another.
Valentine darted through the horde, a blur of motion. She twisted, spun, and pivoted with flawless grace. Like a butterfly weaving through a storm, she danced past grasping claws. Heads rolled, bodies split apart, and dark blood sprayed across the dirt. The monsters could not lay a single finger on her.
Nearby, Grandpa Jiro drew his katana. As the dark metal cleared the scabbard, the blade glowed a fierce, molten red. Blistering heat radiated from the steel, sending wisps of smoke into the air.
He sank into a low stance, his eyes narrowing.
"SEARING SLASH"
He swung the katana in a wide, sweeping arc.
SHINGGG!
A burning red line carved through the horde. The superheated blade melted through flesh and bone like warm butter. The severed edges of the falling corpses hissed and blackened, adding fresh smoke to the battlefield.
A few yards away, Cyrus clenched his fists. A brilliant, pulsing light coated both of his hands.
"LIGHT RAY FIST"
He charged straight into the thickest part of the swarm. His fist slammed into a zombie’s face.
BANG!
A beam of pure light blasted out the back of the monster’s skull. It dropped to the dirt like a stone. Cyrus threw another punch.
BANG!
Another head caved in.
BANG!
BANG!
BANG!
He marched forward, every strike punching a glowing hole through his targets. Zombie after zombie crumpled to the earth.
The second group of the Freedom Convoy had joined the fray.
And the battle had only just begun.
