The cluster of eyeball aliens drifted toward the center of the battlefield. Their massive unblinking eyes tracked the carnage below as they advanced.

Adrian’s jaw set tight.

"Activate the Wave Colliders."

"Yes, sir!"

Behind the frontlines, dozens of machines roared to life. Their metal frames spun, the strange internal rings picking up dizzying speed. A low-frequency hum washed across the battlefield, making the very air vibrate. Nearby soldiers clapped their hands over their ears.

Adrian stepped forward, his gaze locked on the approaching aliens.

"Bring me the equipment."

A soldier rushed over under the weight of a bulky metal case. He set it at Adrian’s feet and dashed back to safety.

Adrian glanced at the dark sky and pressed a button on the pack strapped to his back. A spiral antenna deployed and began to spin.

The stormy clouds answered in seconds.

Boom!

A bolt of lightning tore from the sky and slammed into the antenna with a deafening crack. Electricity surged through the rig and leaped to the metallic case. Unfazed, Adrian unbuckled his shoulder straps. The heavy unit hit the dirt with a loud clang. Yet the antenna stayed active, feeding on the storm overhead.

Adrian knelt by the case and popped the latches. Inside sat a cluster of compact mechanical parts. He pushed his hand in.

Click. Clack.

Mechanical locks snapped shut. When Adrian pulled his hand out, a black metallic bracer encased his fist. He flexed his fingers, testing the metal. It moved smoothly with his joints.

He reached in again and hauled out a heavy, dark metallic coat, throwing it over his shoulders.

Click!

The gear locked onto him. Thin metal plates shielded his chest and back, trailing thick cables down to the humming equipment box on the dirt.

Adrian bumped his fists together.

Clang!

At the metal’s impact, the box behind him flared bright blue. Electricity rushed up the cables. It hit the coat and washed over Adrian in waves of harsh light, popping and hissing across his shoulders and arms.

Adrian’s lined face turned dead serious. He raised both hands, drawing the ambient energy inward. The air grew heavy, static lifting the stray hairs on his head. With a sharp inhale, he slammed his palms together.

Boom!

A blinding beam of electricity erupted from his body, tearing upward.

"Voltage Overload!"

The raw energy ripped across the battlefield, racing straight for the alien cluster. But a split second before impact, a translucent wall snapped into existence in front of the floating eyes.

The blast hit it head-on.

Lightning splashed across the curved surface of the barrier, sending shockwaves through the air. The sky itself seemed to rattle.

Adrian narrowed his eyes.

"Let’s see how much longer you can hold on."

Safe behind their shield, the aliens stared down at him with massive, unfeeling eyes. The endless clash of pure lightning against the energy wall bathed the entire battlefield in a harsh blue glow.

Several hundred meters away, Nina watched the light show from the driver’s seat of the Freedom Convoy’s armored transport. Her eyes shined with excitement.

"Sis."

"Let’s join the battle."

Aldina gave her a sidelong glance and pushed the heavy door open.

"Alright."

She leaped to the ground. Before her boots even hit the dirt, Aldina twisted in mid-air, her long cloak whipping around her body.

"Freezing World."

A blast of pure frost exploded outward. The undead swarming the vehicle turned to solid ice on the spot. Frost raced across the cracked asphalt. In a heartbeat, two towering walls of ice punched out of the ground, carving a clear, frozen path straight through the horde. Aldina touched down, perfectly balanced.

"Nina."

"Your turn."

Nina flashed a wide grin.

"Got it!"

She gripped the twin control sticks.

"Let’s see what my masterpiece can do."

She slammed her thumb over a flashing button.

For a tense second, the truck sat perfectly still. Then, a deep grinding sound vibrated through the frame. The heavy armor plates shifted and slid apart. The rear wheels snapped inward with heavy, metallic thuds. Massive steel joints dropped from the undercarriage. The chassis split, extending downward to form two towering mechanical legs.

The front cab pitched upward. Thick plates slammed together, locking tight to build a broad, ironclad torso. The side doors split down the middle. Long mechanical arms deployed outward, locking into their shoulder sockets with a heavy crunch of gears.

The transformed machine stood tall over the frozen ground. Nina sat safely encased inside the upper cab, now serving as the cockpit of the hulking mech. She pulled a pair of heavy black goggles down over her eyes, grinning from ear to ear.

"Transformation complete."

The towering walker wasn’t elegant. It didn’t boast sleek, advanced lines. But it was built like a brick wall. It was a machine designed for a single purpose: war.

Nina punched the weapon controls. The mech’s right arm cracked open, sliding a heavy rotary cannon forward from the forearm.

It unleashed a deafening storm of lead, tearing the frozen undead to shreds. At the exact same time, the left arm pivoted. A thick rifle barrel punched through the wrist armor.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Massive rounds blasted holes straight through the zombie ranks.

Nina threw her head back and laughed.

"How do you like my masterpiece?!"

The bipedal machine stomped forward. Each heavy step shook the earth. Each burst of gunfire cleared the path in brutal fashion. It tossed shredded bodies aside, wading deeper into the battlefield.

Despite the intense standoff with the floating aliens, Adrian caught the heavy thunder of the walker. He spared a glance, his eyes widening. First, Atlas showed up with those custom mechanical gauntlets. Now Nina was piloting a transport truck turned combat mech.

A complicated look crossed Adrian’s face.

The Freedom Convoy’s engineering capabilities...

He stared at the raging machine tearing through the horde.

They’ve actually developed technology like this?

He had to admit the hard truth. In certain areas, this ragged convoy’s mechanical tech had already surpassed the military’s top engineering divisions.
