The blood altar drank the final drop of blood and shuddered.
BOOOOM!
A crimson ripple erupted from its core.
The shockwave washed over the battlefield, phasing through corpses, soldiers, zombies, and aliens alike.
As the red light touched the one-horned aliens, their bodies locked up. Their eyes flushed a deep, glowing red. A feral frenzy seized them.
"RAAAAGH!"
Abandoning all formation, the creatures charged the nearest military lines. Their speed had doubled in a heartbeat.
Metallic claws shredded through armor.
SLASH!
A soldier flew backward, blood spraying from his chest.
Beside him, another soldier raised a spear. The alien swatted the weapon aside with brute force and drove its claws deep into the man’s abdomen.
The military’s frontline buckled under the renewed assault.
A short distance away, the two one-horned aliens fighting Grandpa Jiro underwent the same vile transformation. Strange black tattoos crawled across their faces and torsos. Their muscles bulged, and their footwork blurred.
WHOOSH!
One vanished from Jiro’s line of sight. He swung his katana upward on pure instinct.
CLANG!
A harsh impact rattled against his sword. Before Jiro could counter, the second alien materialized at his back.
SHING!
Jiro twisted his torso, narrowly dodging a lethal strike. A thin, bloody line opened across his back.
The two creatures boxed him in, darting around like shadows to strike from his blind spots.
CLANG! CLANG! SHING!
Jiro fell back on the defensive. A fresh cut bloomed across his knuckles. Then another sliced his cheek.
Despite the bleeding, Grandpa Jiro’s expression remained steady.
"These bastards..."
His gaze narrowed.
"They’ve gotten stronger."
Across the chaos, a pack of the horned aliens broke away from the main clash and sprinted for Adrian.
Adrian caught the movement in his peripheral vision. He had been focusing his attacks on the giant eyeball alien, but the incoming threat forced his hand. He pivoted toward the rushing pack. Blue lightning erupted from his suit.
"High Voltage!"
BOOOOM!
A blinding current surged forward. The lightning struck the lead alien and chained right to the next.
ZZZZT!
Then a third. Then a fourth.
Sizzling bolts linked the entire group. Their bodies convulsed, smoke rising from their charred flesh. Yet, driven by the blood frenzy, they kept marching forward.
Adrian scowled.
A nearby military officer barked an order.
"Cover for the Colonel!"
The troops fell in line without hesitation.
"FIRE!"
RATATATATATA!
Heavy machine guns unleashed a hail of lead. Missiles trailed white smoke through the sky.
BOOM! BOOM!
The sheer volume of firepower shredded the enhanced aliens, sending their mangled bodies crashing into the dirt.
The giant eyeball alien, however, refused to give Adrian a moment to breathe. Hundreds of twitching pupils zeroed in on him.
RUMBLE!
Slabs of concrete and twisted metal tore themselves loose from the ruined earth. The debris hovered around the massive creature, spinning like a deadly asteroid belt.
WHOOSH!
The monster unleashed the storm of rubble. Chunks of masonry rocketed toward the attack helicopters while a separate barrage aimed right at Adrian.
Pilots yanked their flight sticks to dodge.
Too late.
BOOOOM!
A boulder-sized slab of concrete smashed a chopper’s tail rotor. The aircraft spun out of control and plummeted into the battlefield. A second chunk clipped another helicopter’s hull.
BOOM!
A fireball lit up the sky.
Adrian snapped his head up. A shadow fell over him as a chunk of debris plummeted down.
"High Voltage!"
Electricity coiled around his fist. He drove a punch into the air.
BOOOOM!
The concrete shattered into harmless gravel. But before he could drop his guard, a second boulder slammed in from his blind spot.
His eyes widened.
"Volt Field!"
ZZZZZT!
A dome of crackling energy flared to life around him. The rubble crashed against the barrier.
BOOM!
The electric field ate away at the momentum, but the mass was simply too heavy. Adrian gritted his teeth.
Left with no choice, he threw himself backward. The concrete cratered the exact spot where he had just stood. The harsh dodge pulled taut the cables linking his gear to his external power supply.
SNAP!
The cords ripped free from his armor.
Adrian hit the dirt and slid to a halt. He stared down at the dead cables, then lifted his gaze back to the giant eyeball alien. His expression hardened.
"It’s fine."
Sparks danced across his knuckles.
"I’ve already got enough electricity running through my body."
On the other side of the battlefield, a rogue chunk of debris hurled straight for Leo.
His eyes narrowed. He didn’t flinch. Instead, he drove both katanas into the soil, leaving them planted firmly by his sides.
Leo raised an empty hand. Ink-like darkness pooled in his palm, molding itself into a small black spear.
At first, it matched the size of an ordinary javelin. As Leo pumped more Void Energy into the core, the weapon thickened and stretched. Its sleek surface began to warp, the condensed dark energy rippling out of control.
Leo frowned.
"I think this is the limit "
The construct vibrated in his grip. One more drop of energy and it would detonate right in his hands. To stabilize the chaotic mass, he fed a thin thread of Zen into the weapon.
The spear settled into a pitch-black, absolute void. Leo took aim.
"Void Spear."
He hurled it.
BOOOOM!
The projectile ripped through the air like a tear in reality, colliding dead-center with the incoming rubble.
CRACK!
The concrete dissolved at the point of impact. In a matter of heartbeats, the massive boulder crumbled into a cloud of harmless gray dust.
The spear never lost momentum. It pierced right through the dust cloud, speeding toward the giant eyeball alien.
The monster shifted its gaze to defend itself. A translucent barrier shimmered into existence just in time.
BOOM!
The Void Spear struck the shield. Spiderweb cracks fractured across the glowing surface. The creature’s hundreds of pupils shrank in alarm.
Yet, the shield held.
The dark spear spent the last of its kinetic energy and fizzled into nothingness. Leo kept his eyes on the fractured barrier. Reaching down, he pulled his two katanas free from the dirt.
The shuffling groans behind him signaled another wave of zombies closing in.
Leo turned his back on the giant alien. The dark, humming aura of Void Edge washed over his blades. His expression turned ice-cold.
He took a step forward.
"...Let’s deal with this first "
The horde rushed in.
