Apocalypse Transmigration - The Card Captor System
Chapter 143: troublesomeThe two-horned demon narrowed his eyes, watching Leo cut down the Brutes with fluid, practiced strikes. For the first time since the battle began, the creature’s guard went up.
"Is he from the Rizen Group?"
Golden eyes tracked Leo’s every step.
"And what kind of ability is that?"
Nearby, the massive eyeball alien shifted its focus toward the black-hooded figure. Hundreds of pupils locked onto him.
The moment their gazes met, a strange pressure brushed against Leo’s mind. His Mental Immunity skill flared to life on its own, sweeping the sensation away like dust in the wind. Leo stood his ground, completely unfazed.
Pop! Pop! Pop!
Three of the alien’s pupils ruptured in a spray of dark fluid. The enormous creature recoiled.
"What mental strength..."
Its remaining pupils trembled.
"This human is troublesome."
A short distance away, Adrian cast a glance at the mysterious newcomer. His eyes narrowed in assessment.
"Is this the guy who’s been causing trouble for the military?"
Cyrus spared a fraction of a second to look at Leo before locking his attention back on Ars. Ars caught the shift in focus.
"A friend of yours?"
Cyrus shook his head.
"I don’t know who he is."
The golden light clinging to his body flared brighter.
"But you should worry about yourself."
His expression hardened into ice.
"You’ve successfully earned my ire."
Across the field, Valentine already knew who the newcomer was. She had seen him before, though never dressed quite like this. The black hood. The dark robe. The twin katanas. Even with his face hidden in shadow, his identity was clear.
Valentine let out a breath of sheer relief.
"So he’s here..."
She glanced toward Aldina.
"I just hope Aldina doesn’t cause a fuss with him right now."
Grandpa Jiro stared at the cloaked figure for a long moment. The old swordsman’s eyes crinkled at the edges. There was no mistaking that aura.
"Kid..."
A faint smile touched his weathered face.
"Well done."
Leo kept his focus on the shifting battlefield. Heavy, thudding footsteps announced another pack of Brutes closing in. At the same time, his Danger Sense flared, warning him of threats from all sides. He scanned the mindless zombie horde. Hidden among the rotting bodies were dozens of one-horned aliens. They were fanning out, trapping him in a wide circle.
He wasn’t worried for his own sake. The Brutes and the horned demons packed a punch, but they lacked the strength to be a real threat to him alone. The problem lay behind him. Nina and Aldina were sprawled out on the broken earth. That changed the math. He could slaughter these monsters, but keeping the two women safe in the crossfire was another story.
One stray attack meant their lives.
As if on cue, three Crawlers broke from the restless horde. They launched themselves at Nina and Aldina in unison.
Leo vanished from his spot.
Shing!
He materialized right beside the women. Three arcs of black light carved through the air, and the Crawlers fell to pieces before they even touched the ground.
Leo frowned.
A fresh wave of zombies rushed the vulnerable pair. He sliced them apart. Another pack followed. Then another. The realization hit him.
They’re not trying to attack me.
They’re targeting them.
His stare turned freezing cold.
I knew it.
That giant eyeball isn’t completely brainless.
Once those Brutes arrive, I won’t be able to take it easy anymore.
His mind was made up in a heartbeat. Leo bent down, grabbed Nina, and hoisted her over his shoulder. He turned to Aldina and reached out to lift her next. But the moment his fingers drew near—
Smack!
Aldina swatted his hand away with what little strength she had left.
Leo paused. Her pale face was drained of color, yet her expression held nothing but stubborn pride.
"Don’t..."
"Don’t touch me."
Leo just stared at her.
"Huh?"
The rejection made zero sense to him. A Crawler sprang at his blind side. Without so much as a glance, Leo swung his katana.
Shing!
The beast split in two mid-flight. He looked back down at the exhausted woman.
"What do you mean?"
Aldina struggled to draw a breath.
"I..."
She squeezed her eyes shut, gathering the will to speak.
"I’d rather die..."
"...than let a man’s hand touch me."
Leo stared at her in sheer disbelief.
"Is this really the time for this?"
A fresh cluster of zombies lunged forward. Leo carved a path through them, keeping his body between the undead and the women.
Aldina managed a weak shake of her head.
"Don’t worry about me."
"Take Nina and leave."
Leo clicked his tongue.
"Tch."
"Troublesome woman."
Right then, a new sensation sparked deep within his mind. Leo went rigid. The annoyance washed from his face.
"System..."
"Is this what I think it is?"
For the first time, a trace of real excitement bled into his voice. The system answered without delay.
[Replying to Host.]
[It is finally complete.]
His thoughts kicked into high gear.
"Can you call it here?"
A brief pause hummed in his head.
[Host, the distance is currently too great.]
[The system cannot control it from this location.]
[However, if you will it through your Origin Card, the locks can be released.]
[Once the locks are released, someone can bring it here.]
Leo narrowed his eyes.
"Got it."
He shifted his attention straight to Aldina.
"Can you use your ability one more time?"
Aldina managed a faint frown.
"What?"
"Nothing complicated."
Leo pointed at the dirt.
"Just encase yourself and Nina in ice."
"Keep the ice around you for as long as possible."
Aldina hesitated. Her energy reserves were tapped dry. But catching the dead-serious look in Leo’s eyes, she offered a stiff nod.
"I’ll try."
Leo set Nina down gently beside her and backed away. Aldina raised her trembling hands.
"Freezing World..."
Frost crawled across the broken earth. The ice built up in seconds, wrapping the two women in a thick, solid dome. Leo checked the barrier once. Satisfied, he faced the looming horde. His grip tightened on the hilts of his twin katanas. He took a step forward, and the restless dead surged to meet him.
Shing!
His blades flashed, and the slaughter resumed.
Farther down the battlefield, the military’s shattered frontlines began to reform. Soldiers hauling compact Wave Colliders pushed their way to the vanguard.
"Deploy!"
Several machines fired up in unison.
Bzzzzzt!
Invisible ripples washed through the air. The second the waves hit the nearby horde, the zombies ground to a halt. Their twitches grew erratic and uncoordinated. The mental leash tying them to the eyeball aliens snapped. Stripped of direction, the undead stumbled around like blind cattle.
A moment later, a pack of mindless zombies turned their teeth on the horned demons hiding in their ranks. The aliens barely had time to register the betrayal before claws tore into them. Pure chaos swallowed that section of the fight.
But this time, the madness worked in humanity’s favor. The soldiers seized the opening to patch up their broken lines.
"Hold the line!"
"Push forward!"
The military march began anew.
In another bloody sector, Cyrus and Ars clashed in a high-speed duel. Golden light coated Cyrus’s legs.
Whoosh!
He vanished from sight. Ars countered the move without a second thought. Blood erupted from his pores, hardening into a defensive sphere around his body. Cyrus materialized right beside him, his fist burning with a blinding aura.
"Gregory Secret Technique..."
"Disintegration Fist!"
Boom!
The punch slammed into the bloody shield. The barrier shook with brutal force before a web of cracks spidered across its surface.
Crack! Crack!
The entire sphere shattered into jagged crimson fragments.
Ars lost his smug composure. Cyrus refused to give the alien an inch to breathe. He closed the gap, letting a short blade slide from his sleeve into his waiting palm. The golden light surged into the metal.
"Disintegration Slash!"
The weapon swept toward Ars in a deadly arc. Caught flat-footed, the demon had no time to conjure a second shield. Instead, his thick tail lashed out to intercept the strike.
Shing!
The glowing blade sheared through flesh and bone. The severed tail hit the ground and crumbled into ash.
Ars’s eyes blew wide as he scrambled back to a safe distance. Cyrus held his ground, his chest heaving with heavy breaths. A thin trail of blood leaked from the corner of the human’s mouth. Ars spotted the crimson streak, and a wicked grin crept back onto his face.
"Looks like you’re reaching your limit."
Cyrus swiped the blood away with his thumb. His gaze stayed dead and cold.
"But it’s enough time..."
"...to take you down."
Ars chuckled.
"I like that confidence."
"But you humans always fail to understand something."
A sinister light danced in his eyes.
"You developed machines capable of countering our abilities."
He spread his arms wide in a theatrical gesture.
"But we also come from a higher civilization."
"You don’t think we have ways to amplify our powers?"
Cyrus narrowed his eyes.
"What are you talking about?"
Ars didn’t bother to answer. Instead, a massive shift rippled through the dead center of the battlefield. Directly beneath the floating eyeball alien, a grim construction took shape. A colossal altar was rising, its very foundation built from the crushed bodies of zombies. Dozens of horned demons formed a ring around the grotesque monument.
One of the demons stepped up to the base.
Shing!
It drove a blade through its own wrist. Thick, dark blood spilled over the corpses. A second alien followed suit. Then a third. Soon, dozens of the creatures were slashing their own wrists and throats in a frenzied mass sacrifice.
Their bodies began to dissolve. The altar drank in the pooling blood like a sponge, and the grotesque structure began to mutate. Its gray, fleshy surface flushed red. It grew darker, deepening into a vibrant, wet crimson as it swelled in size. A towering monument of pure blood clawed its way up from the heart of the warzone.
Horror crept over Cyrus’s face.
"What..."
The roar of war faded into an eerie, suffocating quiet. Then, the blood on the ground began to crawl. Not just the blood spilled by the sacrificed demons, but every drop scattered across the ruined earth.
Human blood.
Zombie blood.
Alien blood.
An unseen, magnetic pull seized the gore, dragging it toward the towering monument. Rivers of red slithered over the dirt. It scaled mounds of corpses. It slipped right under the boots of terrified soldiers and surged through deep cracks in the pavement. Everything flowed toward that massive crimson altar.
An unnatural silence swallowed the battlefield, so absolute that even the mindless monsters stopped to watch.
