Marcus Monroe dispatched his men to several different areas.
If anyone found a clue, they were to immediately blow the special Bloodfall whistle to signal the others.
The whistle was an invention of Paige Summers.
While not suited for combat, it was quite convenient for gathering everyone.
Combinations of long and short blasts could represent different meanings. Most importantly, while the whistle didn’t sound particularly loud, its sound became incredibly piercing when infused with energy from a Crystal Core.
This made it perfect for Superpower Users, whose hearing was far superior to that of ordinary people.
Everyone split up to search. About half an hour later, someone suddenly blew their whistle!
Marcus Monroe immediately stopped running. The next second, he took off in the direction of the whistle. He channeled all his energy, moving through Southreach like a streak of light.
He quickly reached the team member who had blown the whistle.
The man was hiding behind a house. He pointed to a residence across the street. "Something’s not right over there. I heard people in the yard talking about a premature birth, lots of blood, and they kept asking if the doctor had arrived..."
Instantly, Marcus Monroe’s expression turned grim.
"How many people are inside?"
"Six in the front yard, about ten in the back. Someone also went out to get a doctor. I don’t know about anyone else..."
Marcus Monroe cut him off. "Got it! I’m going in to take a look."
"Captain! We’re not afraid of their numbers, but if we alert them, it’ll be a disaster if they take the Deputy Base Chief hostage! In her current state, she probably can’t take..."
’He’s right. I... I was being reckless...’
Marcus Monroe steadied his frantic mind and said in a low voice, "You go and wait at the city gate. Sweetie went to get Sean Raines yesterday, so it should be about time. If you meet up with him, bring him here directly. I’ll figure out a way to rescue her from here."
"Yes, sir. I’m on my way. Captain, you have to stay calm!"
"You talk too much!"
After the man left, Marcus Monroe thought for a moment, then took out a vial of powder he carried with him and quietly approached the house across the street.
There wasn’t a single person in sight nearby. Because of the commotion, people had either left the area or were hiding in their homes. No one was wandering around outside, so he didn’t have to worry about his movements being exposed.
He silently circled the exterior of the house, and his heart immediately began to pound erratically.
He smelled Paige Summers’ scent!
She was in this house!
But at the same time, he also smelled the heavy stench of blood!
The memory of his team member mentioning a premature birth... Marcus Monroe nearly ground his teeth to dust!
Still, he forced himself to calm down.
’Yes, I have to be calm.’
’I have to get her out of there in one piece!’
Finding a section of the wall that wasn’t guarded, Marcus Monroe deftly cut an opening in the stone just above the ground and flicked the powder from the vial inside.
He repeated this eight times until all the powder was gone, ensuring it covered both the front and back yards. He then sensed some slight movement from across the way, realizing his other men had arrived, and went back to meet them.
"Captain, did you find her?"
Marcus Monroe nodded, pointing to the house.
"I used some sleeping powder. In one minute, they’ll either be asleep or disoriented. That’s when we rush in. You all handle the Superpower Users outside. I’m going in to save her!"
"Right!"
The dozen or so team members nodded in unison.
The minute passed in a flash. Back by the wall, Marcus Monroe heard some strange noises from inside and immediately signaled his team over.
A series of black shadows descended as if from the heavens, swiftly clearing the wall and landing in the yard.
Marcus Monroe took the opportunity to slit the throats of two patrolling Superpower Users whose movements had become sluggish. Moments later, all the team members split up to deal with the people in the yard, while he charged straight for the house.
It didn’t take long for Marcus Monroe to find the room Paige Summers was in.
He could sense the presence of three people inside.
He leaned against the wall next to the door, considering how to get in, kill them in one strike, and prevent them from harming Paige Summers.
Just then, someone inside opened the door.
Without hesitation, Marcus Monroe lunged forward, his blade slashing at the person’s throat!
The blade was blocked—by the person’s hand.
Blood GUSHED out, spilling onto the floor.
Only then did Marcus Monroe see clearly that the person he had tackled to the ground was none other than Shawn Monroe. The third person in the room was Faye Webb, who was tied up and thrown in a corner.
Shawn Monroe pressed against the blade with both hands, showing no fear. Instead, he said urgently, "It’s you! Did—did you bring a doctor?! Paige Summers is in grave danger!"
Marcus Monroe’s body went rigid for a moment, and his gaze shot toward the bed.
The person convulsing in pain there was Paige Summers!
It was as if flames erupted in his eyes. He scrambled to his feet, planted a foot on Shawn Monroe’s chest, and used the leverage to launch himself to the bedside.
But as he looked at the woman on the bed, he hardly dared to touch her.
Her face was pale, her hair soaked with sweat. Her belly was swollen high, and beneath her were pools of blood.
’How could this have happened?!’
Marcus Monroe was filled with rage, regret, and anguish. He didn’t know how many emotions were clogging his chest, making even breathing feel like an immense effort.
Just then, as if sensing something in her stupor, Paige Summers slowly opened her hazy eyes.
"Is... is that you..."
"It’s me! Hold on, Sean Raines will be here soon!"
As he spoke, he quickly pulled a vial from his spatial storage and stuffed a medicine pill into Paige Summers’ mouth. The medicine was specially made by Levi Young for this exact situation.
He had thought he wouldn’t need to use it.
He had thought he could have rescued Paige Summers before it came to this.
But everything just proved how arrogant he had been!
His chest felt suffocated, as if a blazing fire had ignited within it, threatening to burn his heart to ashes!
"I... I’m not going to make it..."
"Nonsense! Don’t... say that..."
Paige Summers gasped weakly, speaking in a breathy voice. "No, I’m serious... the baby... the baby’s coming. You... you have to deliver it... quick..."
Marcus Monroe was stunned for several seconds, then his voice grew deep. "Okay!"
As he spoke, he flicked his hand, sending several white blades flying toward Shawn Monroe, who was standing to the side with a complicated expression. Marcus roared, "Get out! Both of you, get out!"
He didn’t use his full power in the attack. Right now, he was in no mood to waste time on Shawn Monroe.
Shawn Monroe dodged the blades, glanced one more time at Paige Summers, and opened his mouth, but in the end, he said nothing. He gritted his teeth, grabbed Faye Webb, and left.
Only Marcus Monroe and Paige Summers were left in the room.
After taking the medicine, Paige Summers’ condition improved slightly. The bleeding gradually stopped. Although her stomach still ached terribly—a pain like it was about to burst—she could endure it and was able to speak.
"We can’t wait for Sean Raines. You have to do it... Pick a dagger. I’ll tell you what to do..."
Although Paige Summers had never delivered a baby before, she was certainly more knowledgeable than Marcus Monroe. At least she had a general idea of what to do. ’It all comes down to me now. While the medicine is working, I have some strength. If I give birth now, there might be a chance for the baby. It’s already moving down into my pelvis. If we wait any longer, it might suffocate!’
"Mm."
Marcus Monroe responded with a low grunt, the dagger in his hand flashing with a cold light.
