Paige Summers had lived two lives, but she had never been through something this wretched.
The pain was excruciating, not to mention she still had to instruct Marcus Monroe on what to do.
The only saving grace was that the baby’s position was relatively normal. After the episiotomy, it wasn’t too long of a struggle before the top of the head was visible. Paige Summers gave one final push, and Marcus Monroe finally managed to pull him out.
Her body suddenly felt light, and the last bit of strength she had been holding onto vanished. She vaguely felt a great gush of warmth from her lower body. She only had enough time to tell Marcus Monroe to clear the filth from the baby’s mouth. Hearing his first, faint cry, she passed out before she could even worry if she was hemorrhaging.
When she next awoke, it was only her consciousness. Her body had not a shred of strength. She didn’t even have the energy to open her eyes, let alone think about anything.
She could faintly hear a baby crying. It was soft, as if muffled by something. She also heard Marcus Monroe’s deep voice, but she couldn’t make out what he was saying. There seemed to be other people, but in her state, she was completely unable to tell who they were.
Listening, she drifted back to sleep.
This cycle repeated itself. Gradually, she became aware when she was being fed. She forced herself to drink more of the soup spooned into her mouth, feeling her condition improving bit by bit.
Paige Summers truly woke up ten days later.
Looking at the scruffy, unshaven Marcus Monroe, her first words were, "Where’s the baby?"
Marcus Monroe’s heart sank, and a wronged look couldn’t help but appear on his face.
Still, he answered sullenly, "In the next room. I was afraid he’d disturb your rest. Don’t worry, Sean Raines is watching the little guy. He’s doing great, getting stronger every day!"
Paige Summers breathed a sigh of relief. Then she saw his disheveled appearance and her heart ached for him. She couldn’t help but squeeze his hand. "Thank god... you came..."
As she said this, a wave of fear washed over her in retrospect.
If Marcus Monroe hadn’t arrived in time, there was no way she would have let anyone else deliver her baby. The consequences of that were self-evident.
Hearing her words, Marcus Monroe looked at her pale, bloodless face, and a sour feeling rose in his heart, nearly bringing him to tears. He knew she wouldn’t blame him, but he couldn’t stop blaming himself. These past few days, he had barely paid any attention to the baby, praying only for Paige Summers to wake up soon. In his heart, nothing was more important than her!
If Southreach hadn’t been in such extreme peril, with them right in the middle of it, he wouldn’t have given a damn about the Zombies!
He was afraid. Afraid she would keep her eyes closed and never wake up. Afraid he wouldn’t even get to see her one last time.
In the end, it was only after Sean Raines guaranteed that Paige Summers would be fine that he forced himself to go out. He assembled all the Hunters from the Hunting Parties and devised a plan to build a new city wall, shrinking Southreach’s territory and abandoning the area around The Power Corps’ barracks. He then led the effort to provide cover for the people fighting Zombies outside, allowing them to enter the city and finally stemming the continuous losses of Southreach’s Superpower Users.
Just thinking about the battle situation at the time made Marcus Monroe’s head ache!
The Zombies outside were clearly from the same source as the ones from Mount Gorrow; their mutated strength was quite high. Moreover, they had previously launched a surprise attack on the First Division, creating many new Zombies in the process.
Given Southreach’s current situation, a decisive victory in a single battle was completely impossible!
The First and Second Divisions combined did have a large number of people—several thousand. If they were all at the level of the elites from Bloodfall Base, then wiping out these Zombies would be a piece of cake. The problem was, that wasn’t the case.
The people from the First Division were actually quite capable, but unfortunately, they lacked experience fighting Zombies and weren’t flexible enough in combat, suffering significant losses. As for the Second Division, they were the ones who hadn’t made the cut. They were full of energy when it came to fighting their own kind, but when facing real Zombies, they were too scared to perform at their usual level.
As for the Hunting Parties within the city, their individual skills were decent, but they lacked teamwork and were too preoccupied with their own petty schemes. From the very beginning, Marcus Monroe had no intention of sending them all out as reinforcements. However, during the covering operation, he did use a few of them who had particularly outstanding abilities.
Taking all these factors into account, as soon as the Zombies were held off outside the new city walls, Marcus Monroe washed his hands of the whole affair. He focused solely on staying by Paige Summers’s side.
Fortunately, Maisie Joyce was truly remarkable.
Previously, with only the men from The Guard under her command, she had already cleared out most of the city’s interior.
All the low-level new Zombies were wiped out. Only the one that had infiltrated the city to cause chaos managed to escape. As for the unidentified masked individuals... most were surrounded and killed, while a small number escaped using special superpowers.
