Apocalypse Villainess? Nah, I'm Nice

Chapter 493 - 347: Giving Birth (2)

By now, they were probably all outside the city.

The city had quieted down. As for the outside, this was the best they could do for now.

Some of the Superpower Users were dispatched to reinforce the city walls in day and night shifts, while the others took charge of the defenses.

As for how to placate the public or handle internal affairs, Marcus Monroe couldn’t be bothered. All that mattered to him was that Leo Joyce, who had inexplicably survived, was already locked up and couldn’t cause any more trouble. That was enough to put his mind at ease.

Right now, his only thought was for Paige Summers to rest and recover.

The postpartum hemorrhage after the baby was born that day had given him a terrible fright.

And the episiotomy wound... no matter how much hemostatic medicine they used, the bleeding just washed it away. Marcus Monroe still felt a lingering fear just thinking about it.

Thankfully, Sean Raines arrived in time. Under his direction, they finally managed to stanch the bleeding, and they even gave her a blood transfusion...

But Paige Summers’s body had been severely weakened by the ordeal.

And so, it had taken a full ten days for her to wake up.

Marcus Monroe squeezed Paige Summers’s hand tighter and let out a deep breath. "Don’t think about anything. I’ll take care of the baby. You just focus on resting, understand?"

Paige Summers managed a smile. "Okay."

After Marcus Monroe fed her a meal and her medicine, he finally brought the baby over.

Paige Summers didn’t have the strength to hold him, so she could only have the baby lie down next to her. She turned slightly onto her side to look at him.

A baby born at just over seven months should have been frail, but Paige Summers had been in excellent health before, and the baby had been well-nourished, so he wasn’t small. His hair was just a little sparse and not very dark. At ten days old, his features hadn’t filled out yet, and his skin was all red.

Paige Summers summoned her strength to reach out and touch his tiny arms and legs, a bittersweet ache filling her heart.

She was severely anemic and still felt dizzy; she wasn’t producing any milk at all. Marcus Monroe had told her that for the past several days, the little one’s meals had been a fine rice powder, ground by the team members with a small stone mill and rice. In addition, they had to add a gentle, nourishing medicinal fluid that Sean Raines had prepared.

Paige Summers felt that her greatest wish right now was to recover quickly and see if she could produce some milk for her baby...

Although the baby was thin, he wasn’t particularly weak, judging by the way he stretched his arms and kicked his legs.

Paige Summers felt a little more at ease.

After touching him here and looking at him there, she quickly grew tired and had no choice but to lie back down.

Marcus Monroe sat by the bed the whole time, watching the mother and son, a soft smile playing on his lips.

Paige Summers couldn’t help but smile too. "Have you named the baby yet?"

"Ahem, I haven’t gotten around to it."

Paige Summers didn’t mind. She knew he must have been incredibly busy these past few days. She just smiled and said, "Let’s give him the nickname Annie, then. You can take your time thinking of a formal name, okay?"

"Annie, huh... All right, that’s a great name! Mmm, there’s no rush for his formal name. I’ll mull it over."

"Okay." After a pause, Paige Summers added, "Tell me what’s going on outside. What’s the situation now?"

Marcus Monroe frowned. "Why talk about that? I told you not to worry so much."

"I’m not worrying, just listening. If I don’t know, I’ll be even more concerned."

Marcus Monroe couldn’t win against her and had to admit she had a point. So, he gave her a brief rundown of what had happened over the past few days.

Paige Summers listened, her eyes slowly closing.

As Marcus Monroe continued, he realized she had fallen asleep. He stopped talking, sighed softly, and carried the half-asleep Annie into the next room.

When Sean Raines saw him enter, he slowly put down his book. He waited until Marcus had settled the baby on the bed before asking casually, "She should be doing better today, right?"

"Yeah. She ate her food, took her medicine, and we talked for a while. She even watched Annie for a good bit. She’s asleep now."

"Annie?"

"It’s the nickname she gave the baby."

Sean Raines nodded in understanding. "That’s good. Don’t worry, the medicine I’m giving her is perfect for her condition. After another seven or eight days of recovery, she should be able to sit up on her own. But her anemia is severe, so that will require long-term treatment."

"I know," Marcus Monroe replied, then fell silent, simply sitting on the sofa and staring blankly at the ceiling.

Seeing him like that, Sean Raines shook his head to himself and picked up his book again.

’He knew Marcus Monroe was unhappy. One reason was definitely Paige Summers’s health, but the other was probably the question of what to do with Shawn Monroe.’

’When he had arrived that day, Paige Summers’s condition was already critical. Besides stopping the bleeding, she was in urgent need of a blood transfusion.’

’But after asking everyone present, it turned out no one had Type O blood—except for Shawn Monroe.’

’So, it went without saying. It had to be him.’

’After a full thousand milliliters were transfused, Shawn Monroe could no longer stand, and only then did Paige Summers barely stabilize.’

’Only after that was he able to administer the medicine.’

’Originally, according to Marcus Monroe’s wishes, he would have definitely killed Shawn Monroe after Paige Summers was saved. But at the time, Shawn Monroe had lost so much blood he couldn’t even get out of bed. How could Marcus bring himself to do it?’

’There was no choice but to toss him in a corner room to recover.’

’Those team members were shrewd, though. They didn’t mistreat him; in fact, they fed him well.’

’One day, Sean Raines asked about it casually and learned that they wanted to nurse the man back to health as quickly as possible... to serve as a mobile blood bank for their Vice Base Chief!’

’The answer truly left him at a loss for whether to laugh or cry.’

’But he had to admit, they had a point.’

’Paige Summers’s condition hadn’t stabilized back then; it was possible she might have really needed it!’

’But now, it seemed that wouldn’t be necessary.’

’Paige Summers had a tenacious hold on life. From here on out, quiet recuperation would be enough.’

Sean Raines stared at the words in his book, but his mind couldn’t help but drift further and further away.

’From the looks of it, Shawn Monroe had genuinely started to care for Paige Summers.’

’He would occasionally go check on Shawn’s condition. Shawn himself paid little attention to his own health; instead, he relentlessly asked how Paige Summers was doing... Sean hadn’t mentioned this to Marcus Monroe, but he figured Marcus already had a pretty good idea.’

’People really are inexplicable creatures.’

’He was well aware of the history between Paige Summers and Shawn Monroe. While it might not have been a feud to the death, it was still quite serious.’

’Who could have predicted things would turn out like this?’

’And another thing... where had those several dozen Central Army soldiers that Shawn Monroe never mentioned gone?’

’Did he still have an ace up his sleeve?’

Sean Raines sighed at the thought.

’Forget it. I’ll let Marcus Monroe worry about all that.’
