The cold wind of Zone Zero blew against Aiden’s face. He hovered a couple of meters above ground, his crimson eyes scanning across the place.
He had already traveled several miles into the outer rim of Zone Zero. So far, he had only encountered rank 2 chaotic beasts like those brown serpents. He had killed them and absorbed their blood essence.
But he knew that to truly survive in this place and face the upcoming threat from the Cyrenthia Empire, he needed to know how effective his poisons were. After all, they would be the main method of operation. The operatives of the Cyrenthia Empire would most likely be rank 3 warriors. There was no way he could handle them with his current power.
He landed quietly on the thick branch of a giant tree. The tree bark was covered in frost, but Aiden stood on it firmly, in his crimson armor, daggers in hand, crimson arrows floating around him.
Three small glass vials appeared before him. Inside the vials were different colored gases swirling around. These were a few of the many rank 3 poisons he had purchased from the Alchemist Association.
"Before I face human operatives, I need to test these poisons on a real rank 3 chaotic beast," Aiden thought. "I need to know how they affect a creature"
He put two of the vials back into his storage bracelet and kept one.
The gas inside this particular vial was pale purple. It was an intermediate rank 3 sense dwarfing poison.
With his enhanced sight, smell and hearing tuned up to maximum capacity, Aiden had already identified his target.
Some kilometers to his left, beneath a thick cluster of frozen vines and collapsed icy concrete, he heard heavy, irregular breathing. A strong, pungent smell of iron and rotting meat wafted through the freezing air.
Aiden opened his eyes. His enhanced vision zoomed in on the target.
Lurking beneath the frozen ruin was a giant chaotic beast. It looked like a cross between a saber-toothed tiger and an ape, covered in thick blue fur and icy white scales. Acidic saliva dropped out of its mouth, melting the ground.
This was an intermediate rank 3 chaotic beast—a Frost-Marrow Beast.
"Perfect," Aiden muttered quietly.
The Frost-Marrow Beast was currently devouring the carcass of a smaller rank 2 beast. It was alert, its ears constantly twitching to catch any sound of nearby predators.
Aiden did not drop down to the ground. Neither did he approach the beast. Several blobs of blood appeared before him and transformed into small crimson threads.
The small crimson threads moved towards the vial and firmly attached themselves to it. The small crimson threads were so tiny that they looked almost microscopic. But they were very dense and thick.
Under his will, the vial of the sense deprivation poison moved, firmly wrapped around by the crimson threads. Because the crimson threads were so tiny, anyone who’d observe it would only see the floating vial, instead of the threads. Aiden would not treat rank 3 chaotic beasts like mindless creatures. They were sentient. He needed to be extremely covert so that he doesn’t reveal his location to them.
The vial flew silently through the air, passing through the thick leaves and giant vines. It landed right at the feet of the Frost-Marrow Beast.
The crimson threads squeezed the vial and shattered it.
Instantly, the pale purple gas erupted from the broken vial. It expanded at an astonishing speed, turning into a thick cloud of purple mist that covered a large radius of several meters within seconds.
The Frost-Marrow Beast immediately noticed the sudden purple fog.
What the hell was this?
It smelt so funny? Was it some sort of concentrated worldly energy in the locality?
No. It had been here for a very long time. The worldly energy in this place did not look like this.
This could only mean that another predator in the vicinity was using its ability to kill it.
Who would dare attack her?
It let out a furious roar and swiped its massive claw at the air, trying to blow the mist away with sheer physical force.
However, the gaseous poison was light and sticky. The moment the beast inhaled the gas, the poison entered its respiratory system and absorbed directly into its bloodstream.
Roar!
The Frost-Marrow Beast suddenly staggered. Its bright yellow eyes grew unfocused and bloodshot.
Aiden observed the creature carefully from the tree he was on, far from the creature’s locality.
The beast began swiping its sharp claws wildly at thin air. It was as if it could not see, hear or smell anything.
It was staggering around like a drunkard, completely unaware of its surroundings.
"The dispersal speed is fast, and the sensory disruption is extremely effective against an intermediate rank 3 beast," Aiden thought "Even with its strong physical body, it couldn’t resist the gas once inhaled. It should work against human operatives"
Having gathered the data he needed, Aiden decided to finish the fight quickly. He did not want the noise of the beast’s frantic roars to attract other high-ranking chaotic beasts in the area.
The tiny crimson threads that had shattered the vial containing the gaseous sense deprivation poison turned into large crimson arrows.
Several chaotic beasts, no matter how strong they were, had one weakness, their eyes. No matter how terrifying their defenses and physical bodies were, their eyes were usually uncovered and unguarded. Of course, this did not mean that it was easy to kill them. Sentient chaotic beasts understood this very well. They therefore utilised their affinities to protect their eyes during combat.
But the frost marrow beast had dwarfed senses at the moment. It could not even notice the crimson arrows spinning towards its eyes. So, it could not counterattack.
The Frost-Marrow Beast was still throwing it’s hands around aimlessly, completely oblivious to any threat in the vicinity.
Puchi!
The crimson arrows pierced through the eyes of the creature and disappeared into its brain.
It could not feel the pain because it’s sensory deprivation.
However, dense, dark red blood burst out of its now hollow eye sockets since it’s eyes had been completely destroyed.
The beast let out a muffled cry. It realised that for some reason, it was dying.
The Frost-Marrow Beast’s massive body trembled violently for a second. Then, it fell and it crashed heavily onto the frozen, marshy floor.
The ground shook. Ice shards scattered everywhere.
The beast was dead. Blood and brain matter pulled beneath its feet.
Aiden flapped his crimson wings and shot towards the creature’s direction. When he was in a three kilometer radius, he absorbed the blood essence of the creature. The crimson arrows shot out of its head. They transformed into a large crimson hand and grabbed the corpse of the creature. A few moments later, the crimson hand arrived before Aiden, currently standing on a new tree. He put the corpse in his storage bracelet. The crimson arrows joined the other crimson arrows floating across him.
He looked around at the quiet, foggy forest.
"Now that I know how powerful the poisons are, it’s time to prepare the hunting ground."
Aiden flapped his crimson wings and disappeared deeper into the frozen, forested ruins of Zone Zero.
