Kahra Desert.
Rustwater Town.
Northern District.
Town Lord’s manor.
A group of town enforcers were currently cowering before a short man with a big belly and calm, cold eyes.
This man was Vanity, the Town Lord of Rustwater Town. He was an expert rank 2 warrior.
"State your report. How is the investigation going?" Vanity asked.
"Sir, we searched throughout town, but we didn’t find any traces of anyone who may fit the kind of person we are looking for," the town enforcer in charge of the investigation for the person who killed the enforcers at the gate said. He was prepared to either take a slap from the Town Lord or have an arm cut.
But contrary to what he expected, the Town Lord was quiet.
Vanity was in thought.
"Whoever did this is very meticulous." He spoke with furrowed brows. "If you cannot find him, then it means he has left town."
He rested a hand on a table. However, the table crashed immediately. Clearly, he was angry.
"A day’s worth of money, all gone like that," Vanity said, his cowering subordinates quietly listening to him. None dared to say a word.
"Those MadCity town enforcers come for 70 percent of the taxes I collect. The entrance fees the residents pay to enter the gates is our highest source of income. To think that someone would ruin a day’s worth of business... Forget it. Since the assassin has left, there’s no need to waste our time any further. Just double security and night patrols. You are dismissed."
"Yes, sir," the group of enforcers said and turned around to leave.
"One more thing," Vanity suddenly spoke again, causing the enforcers to halt in their tracks. He was not gonna kill them, right?
Vanity added, "Send some enforcers to Ashcreek Town. The Town Lord there is an old enemy. Perhaps she may be holding a grudge. Let them gather information and try to listen to rumors there to find out if she’s the one behind what happened at the gate. Then we will see the way forward."
"Yes, sir," the enforcers sighed in relief that he didn’t kill them, then left the room.

It was daytime.
Somewhere in the central district of Rustwater Town.
In an apartment.
A beginner rank 2 warrior was currently surrounded by several rank 1 warriors.
The beginner rank 2 warrior checked the time.
"It’s ten o’clock. Why are they still not back?" he said as he furrowed his brows.
"Could it be that something happened to them?" his assistant, a legendary rank 1 warrior, said. She crossed her legs and took a sip of whiskey.
"This is the first time they’ve been late to return after an operation. Did something happen?" someone added.
"It’s well known in our field that the lodgekeeper in the central district is very good at finding targets. Also, he always honors his end of the deal. I don’t think he did anything bad to them. It could be that the target was stronger than they anticipated and he killed them. Or, they managed to eliminate the target, but they were mugged and killed by someone when they were returning," the assistant said.
Everyone nodded.
"Anyway, I’ve sent someone to observe the situation there. So we will know the outcome sooner or later," the beginner rank 2 warrior said.
Bang...
Suddenly, the doors swung open.
"Boss Grim," the person who had just entered panted. It was clear to everyone in the room that he had run here with all the speed he could muster.
"Speak," Grim, the beginner rank 2 warrior, said.
"Boss, the lodge is open, but there has been a change of management," the person spoke.
"I see." A glint flashed through Grim’s eyes.
"It seems someone killed them and the lodgekeeper and took over the lodge," he said.
"What do we do?" the assistant said as she sat on his lap.
"Actually, the new lodgekeeper has given us a solution to our problems. Why don’t we just kill him and take over the lodge? As you all know, I’m now a beginner rank 2 warrior. Whoever the new lodgekeeper is, he’s most likely a legendary rank 1 warrior. I can take care of him. Let’s head there now!" Grim said.
Everyone nodded.
They had taxes to pay. Since the new lodgekeeper had ruined their business, they might as well take over his business.
"Let’s go." The Grim gang left the apartment.

Rustwater Town.
Central District.
Rustwater Lodge.
Aiden was currently seated behind the counter, scrolling through his phone screen and reading.
At the same time, his eyes were crimson as he scanned the town. For a town as small as Rustwater Town, hearing and seeing everything happening at every nook and cranny was easy for him with his advanced senses.
He had listened to the conversation between Vanity and his subordinates.
Everything was happening within his expectations. The Town Lord was completely in the dark. To make things better, he was actually suspecting an old enemy of his, the Town Lord of Ashcreek Town, for the death of his enforcers.
Aiden would have killed the Town Lord covertly and absorbed his blood essence. No one would have found out.
But he decided against it because he wanted to leave this town next month. If he killed the Town Lord now, although the City Lord of MadCity would not find who did it no matter how much he investigated the matter, he would probably let the task collectors he sends here investigate the cause of the Town Lord’s death, and that would delay the movement of the vehicle that would leave towards MadCity.
Aiden didn’t want his movement to MadCity to delay. There was a chance that he could forge an identity there.
__
He had also listened to the conversation between the Grim gang members.
He knew they were headed here.
Suddenly, the door opened.
A group of people covered in beast blood stepped into the lodge. It was obvious they had just returned from hunting chaotic beasts outside the town.
Aiden knew it wasn’t Grim and his people.
The group of people walked to the counter.
"Where’s the lodgekeeper?" the leader of the group said. She had a very puzzled expression on her face. Where was her boyfriend? And who was this fellow?
"We are under new management now," Aiden replied flatly, his gaze still on his phone screen.
"Hahhah. You must be joking, right?" a dude behind the lady replied.
Aiden looked at the group covered in blood with polite indifference.
"We are under new management. If you won’t find a room, or order a drink, kindly leave," Aiden said with polite indifference, then returned back to his phone screen.
The lady was angry.
Who the hell was this black-haired fucker? And what kind of bullshit was he spouting?
The only way he could take over management was if he killed her boyfriend. But that was not possible, right? This fellow looked very weak. He must have been hired to work for him. And here he was, throwing his weight around.
She had to teach him a lesson for her boyfriend.
Quickly, she raised her hand as lightning flickered across her figure.
