As the tip of Valerian’s spear hit the ice wyvern beneath him, a large explosion of black-purple lightning branched outward from the impact.

The surrounding wyverns were able to react to the sudden attack and retreat before the explosion could turn them to dust.

But the wyvern that took the attack wasn’t so lucky. When the lightning-enhanced spear tip reached it, before its brain could even comprehend that it was being attacked, its life already ended.

The force behind the thrust completely split the wyvern in two, with the lightning burning its flesh and turning what were once beautiful light blue scales into black and charred pieces.

Normally, an attack with void lightning wouldn’t even leave these pieces behind, but Valerian didn’t use the void part of his affinity, going back to regular lightning, though it kept the color of its cosmic variant.

The attack traveled downward until it hit the thick canopy of trees, creating a large crater roughly 100 meters across. The wyvern began to fall, and Valerian stayed up in the air thanks to his flying.

The leader of the wyverns went in to attack first. Before the body of its fallen comrade could even reach the ground, the leader was approaching fast.

With each flap of its powerful wings, snow and small chunks of ice were left in its wake. The closer it got, the colder the air around Valerian got, though the temperature change didn’t mean much to him, as his body was simply beyond the cold an S-rank being could emit.

A large amount of ice mana gathered around the body of the leader, enhancing its body and forming something resembling armor over its scales. The other beasts didn’t just sit idle and watch their leader fight for them.

They began to form icicles around them, ready to unleash a barrage of ice on Valerian at the first opportunity.

Valerian was surrounded by the lower-rank wyverns, most of them just at A+ rank. With their leader flying at him fast, enhanced by its ice armor, it was a bad position by all means. But Valerian couldn’t help but have a wicked grin on his face as his white-silver hair billowed in the wind and black-purple lightning was crackling around him.

Readying his spear, he prepared to meet the leader head-on in a competition of strength. The lightning around him vanished and was replaced with small flickers of cosmic flames. Like the leader, he began to coat his body in a layer of cosmic flames to create an additional armor over Twilight, and he dashed towards the outstretched jaws of the leader.

As they were about to meet, the other wyverns released the icicles that they had prepared before. All of the remaining 5 wyverns unleashed 10 shards of ice each, each one 1.5 meters long. They released the attack before Valerian and the leader met, so that they would crash into him at the same time as the larger wyvern. It was a coordinated attack with which they had been able to take out larger and stronger prey for years. It was supposed to be perfect.

Meeting the jaws of the wyvern, Valerian swung his spear that was now enhanced by his cosmic flames. An arc of flames shot out, and when it hit the leader, the ice around its body began to melt, but it didn’t stop.

Fighting through the pain, the wyvern pushed forward and chomped down on Valerian at the same time the icicles reached him. With pinpoint precision, they each hit him without injuring their leader.

The large wyvern could feel its fangs dig deep into the body of their opponent, but it felt wrong. It couldn’t say what was wrong, it just knew that something wasn’t right. Its belief was reinforced by the fact that even though it had its fangs in Valerian’s body and the attacks of its pack mates had reached him, he had yet to taste a single drop of blood.

„Hey, that wasn’t half bad."

Valerian’s voice echoed through the battlefield, and for some reason, the wyverns could understand what he was saying. They didn’t have a language of their own, resorting to grunts and other sounds, but now the clear meaning behind the sounds leaving Valerian’s mouth made perfect sense inside their brains, and they knew what he said.

Still impaled by the fangs and the ice, Valerian unleashed a wave of cosmic flames to free himself of the lock. The leader retreated immediately, and the icicles inside his body melted, freeing him.

Flying in the air, surrounded by the mist of the evaporated ice, Valerian snapped his fingers and the mist disappeared, revealing his figure. The places where he was hit were bare, but Twilight was already working on fixing whatever damage was done. The skin beneath was unharmed and in perfect shape, healed perfectly without any blemishes or scars.

„Thanks, I wanted to test out this healing."

Valerian wanted to know just how strong the healing of his physique was, and he was more than satisfied. The physique didn’t just heal his body back into perfect condition, it had even numbed the pain one would normally experience from being stabbed by ice and impaled by the massive fangs of the wyvern.

Now that Valerian got his answer to the question of healing, there was only one thing he had to do, but he would need all the other wyverns to be gone for that, as he needed his whole focus on that task.

In a lightning-fast movement, Valerian swung around and thrust his spear towards two wyverns that were flying close to each other.

From the tip of his spear, an inferno of cosmic flames emerged. They shot out so fast that the wyverns didn’t have enough time to move away, but they still tried to block it by creating a wall made from ice in the air.

But the attempt at blocking the attack was without success, as the fire didn’t even stop for a moment and tore down the wall, engulfing both wyverns and leaving nothing behind.

All of this happened so fast that the others didn’t have enough time to react or help their two friends, but now they realized that 3 of them were already dead.

The leader let out a roar that, surprisingly, Valerian didn’t understand, even though his bloodline gave him a universal language understanding. The reason was that the roar of the leader wasn’t part of any language, and was more like a sound that the others understood based on experience, not because it had a meaning like a word.

The three remaining wyverns and the leader began to circle Valerian, who was just standing still in the middle.

’What are they doing?’

From their mouths, they breathed a cold breath towards Valerian while still circling him, trying to attack him in his blind spot. But thanks to his spatial perception, Valerian didn’t have a blind spot. So, he knew exactly from where any attack would come.

As the first breath attack was about to reach his back, he casually waved his hand and a ball of fire appeared around him, blocking any kind of ice attack.

But the wyverns didn’t stop. They continued to try and do any kind of damage to him, but no matter how much effort or mana they put into their attacks, none were able to breach Valerian’s defense.

Getting bored, Valerian decided to end this fight. The space around him folded, taking him straight in front of one of the wyverns.

Not giving it even the time to be surprised, Valerian swung his spear down vertically. The attack traveled in the form of a concentrated blade of cosmic flames, cutting the wyvern in half.

Before the corpse could begin to fall to the ground, he was already gone, reappearing at the back of one of the two remaining lesser wyverns.

Valerian simply stomped down his right foot, but the sheer power behind that stomp cracked the scales of the lizard, causing it to wince in pain. Stomping down once more, but this time with cosmic flames, a blast of fire left Valerian’s sole, incinerating the torso of the wyvern.

Like before, Valerian disappeared again, but this time he reappeared right over the head of the leader. Reaching down, Valerian put his palm on the top of the leader’s head, and with one simple push downward, the large wyvern crashed down to the ground, causing an explosion on its landing that swept away all the trees in the vicinity.

Instead of going to the last still-flying wyvern, Valerian gathered space mana in the tip of his spear and cleaved down in the open air. Instead of a large explosion or display of elemental might, the head of the wyvern that was dozens of meters away simply separated from its neck as the space cracked and fractured.

Finally done with getting rid of the mobs, Valerian turned downwards to where the leader was still on the ground. While pushing him downwards, Valerian made sure not to use too much force so it wouldn’t die. He still had to take the element, after all.

Folding the space, he appeared on the ground in front of the massive head of the unconscious wyvern.

’I wonder what ice will turn into.’

Excited to find out, Valerian placed his hand on the head and began to channel his mana into his unique skill.
