Again and again, and again and again, lightning tore through the soldier’s body, burning and destroying everything in its path. Bones, muscles, organs, even the blood, everything got burned, just for it all to knit back together and for it all to repeat one more time.
The screams had long stopped, tears of blood covered his face, but Valerian didn’t stop; he wouldn’t stop as long as there was still a little life inside the soldier’s mind, as long as there was still a chance for him to recover.
The others watched it all: the soul-crushing screams in the beginning, the smell of blood and fecal matter that escaped their friend, the silence after his voice died in his throat. No one dared to talk or breathe too loud.
After what felt like years, Valerian let go of the head he was holding, letting the broken soldier fall to the ground. When he hit the ground, he offered no resistance, folded like a house of cards, and didn’t move after that.
They didn’t dare look at Valerian, afraid they would go through the same thing, but Valerian didn’t care. He didn’t care that they were afraid, that they were sorry.
With steady steps, he walked over to the broken soldier, stepping on his head and crushing his skull without effort. The others didn’t look at their dead friend; their eyes were glued to Valerian as he moved closer, not caring about the blood and brain matter still on his boot.
The three immobilized soldiers couldn’t even tremble, their bodies in the tight grip of the Space Lock, the crushing weight of the mana weighing down on them.
"Unfortunately, I don’t have enough time to give you all the same treatment."
A faint spark of hope bloomed in their hearts. Maybe they would make it out alive, maybe he would just knock them out, or hopefully he would kill them swiftly.
"But you are just as guilty as he was."
Their hearts dropped.
Valerian channeled his mana into his hands and a purple-black flame appeared. He held out his hands in front of the unmoving soldiers, and slowly, they burned. Not fast and all at once, the fire started at their feet, making its way up slowly to their heads.
Their screams filled the air once more at the agonizing pain of cosmic fire eating away at their bodies. But that wasn’t all: a green wave passed right behind the cosmic flames, healing their wounds.
They were illuminated by waves of purple-black fire eating them alive and a green light healing them back.
And Valerian watched them burn; there was no mercy in his eyes, no guilt, only a cold expression that didn’t let a single emotion through.
But Arthur was still outside clearing the camp, so Valerian had to speed this up, but he also didn’t want to give them a fast death, so he thought of the most painful way he could kill them.
He had a lot of different tools on hand that could all deliver immense pain to a person. He could use his [Absolute Zero] to freeze off their limbs and then shatter them, or use [Cosmic Fire] to boil their blood, but that would take time he didn’t have.
Getting an idea, his eyes lit up with an excitement that was totally misplaced considering the situation he was in.
Using [Event Horizon], a black pool of darkness appeared underneath the soldiers. Suddenly, the gravity inside the field increased several-fold; their bones began to creak under the pressure, their blood vessels exploded. With one final pulse of mana, the gravity increase reached 100x, and the bones, internal organs, and blood vessels crushed and became one large soup of innards.
With a wet splash, Valerian released the Space Lock, causing them to fall to the ground. Valerian didn’t even spare them a look as he moved back outside to deal with the others; his mood was now ruined after that game of cards. But not without storing all the bodies inside his pocket dimension.
After stepping outside the tent, he released the sound barrier and walked around the camp. If there was one good thing coming out of that encounter, it was that they thought Valerian was a rookie, so he didn’t have to hide.
Nearing the closest campfire, he was noticed by one of the soldiers sitting around; it was a lean beastman of the serpent subspecies. He had light green scales on his cheeks and arms and, like Valerian, slitted green eyes.
"You one of the new ones?"
When the snakekin addressed him, the others around the campfire looked up at Valerian. There were a total of 5 soldiers sitting around the fire: 3 men and 2 women.
"Yeah, mind if I join you?"
This time, it was one of the female soldiers that answered with excitement.
"Not at all! Come here, sit next to me!"
She patted the spot next to her on the log she was sitting on vigorously.
Valerian nodded and sat down next to her, and with the most charming smile he could show, fully displaying his SSS-rank charm, he asked the woman:
"Thank you, you are so kind and beautiful, if I may add. Can I know your name?"
The woman blushed at the compliment and the charming smile, causing the other female soldier sitting around the fire to pout in annoyance.
"My name is Kara, what’s yours?"
Kara was a feline beastkin with blond hair and golden ears and tail. Paired with her clear blue slitted eyes, she would certainly be considered a beauty herself.
"I’m Arthur, it’s nice to meet you, Kara."
Valerian said shamelessly with the same charming smile.
"Ahem!"
At the clearly fake cough, Valerian turned to the others and the person who fake-coughed; it was the other female soldier.
"I’m Marta, and it’s nice meeting you, Arthur."
Valerian smiled at her.
"It’s also nice meeting you, Marta, and may I say you are also a beautiful woman."
Marta blushed, causing her whole face to turn red. She, like Kara, was a feline beastkin with brown hair and ears; she had slitted amber eyes.
The 3 other men at the campfire obviously didn’t miss the blushing women and gritted their teeth in frustration.
"I don’t think I have seen you before, Arthur. Which part of Feralis are you from?"
Not even breaking a sweat or getting nervous, Valerian displayed his acting skills.
"I’m from a small village in the south, you’ve probably never heard of it before, especially after it got destroyed."
Turning the story into a sadder version would make people less comfortable asking questions, and it worked in a way.
"Oh really? And what was the village called?"
The male soldier didn’t let up and asked for more information, but Valerian’s plan worked and Kara and Marta came to his defense.
"Don’t ask him that! Can’t you see how painful it is for him!"
"Yeah! You guys are just brutes that can’t understand more emotional guys like Arthur!"
Valerian looked to the side to hide his face, which caused the others to think that he must be crying, but in reality, he was trying to keep his laugh in.
Kara, sitting next to him, rubbed his shoulder to console him.
"It’s okay, Arthur, I’m here for you."
Valerian took this opportunity to separate her from the group.
He moved in fast to her feline ear and, in a low voice that made the hair on her neck stand up in a good way, he whispered:
"You are so beautiful, I want you. Want to go to my tent?"
To Kara, the world stopped spinning for a second as the meaning behind the words settled in.
Her face turned beet red and her head spun; she couldn’t answer, but simply nodded, embarrassed.
Valerian placed a hand on hers and took it.
"We will go for today, have a good night, everybody."
The others clearly saw it: the whisper, and then the red face, and they knew what was going to happen.
The male soldiers became even more frustrated, but they couldn’t do anything about it, and Marta had a sad expression, clearly wanting to be the one he took to his tent.
Leading the flustered Kara between the tents, Valerian separated her from the others. When they finally got out of the line of sight of the others, he turned around to face her.
"Arthur, just so you know, I’m not that experien-"
Before she could finish her sentence, all thought stopped and her head left her body. Valerian stood in front of her with a blade made from pitch-black darkness in his hand, the warm and kind look in his eyes completely gone, replaced by the same cold one he showed the other soldiers.
Before Kara’s head or body landed on the ground, he placed them inside the pocket space. Releasing the hold on the darkness blade, he once again put on the mask of the charming beastman and walked back to the campfire.
