Ascension of the last Celestial

Chapter 56: Picking Dance Partners

’This idiot, didn’t I tell him not to use so much mana?’

Valerian looked up at the incoming wave of fire; he could clearly feel the massive amounts of mana in that single attack.

’That must be around 70% of his reserves. Surely he had a good reason to use almost all of his mana.’

Deciding to interrogate his friend on his questionable mana usage later, Valerian took a look around the camp and saw the terror in the eyes of the beastkin soldiers.

’This should kill the weaker ones.’

With a pulse of his mana, the space around him folded and he reappeared high above the camp next to the flying Arthur.

When Valerian looked at him, he saw the clear exhaustion written all over him.

"So, want to tell me why you used so much mana there?"

Arthur looked at Valerian with a grin. From his system inventory, he took out a vial filled with a deep blue liquid. Without saying a word, he opened the cork and downed the vial.

Valerian watched him with curious eyes, both of them completely ignoring the wall of fire still descending on the camp.

After he drank all the liquid, he casually tossed the vial away for it to fall into the fire.

"What was that?"

"That was a mana potion. It just completely refilled my mana pool."

Valerian looked at Arthur with amazement.

"So they are kind of like healing potions, but how do they work? I know healing potions are made with the Life element, but a mana potion? Where did you get this?"

"The system shop, and it wasn’t even that expensive," Arthur answered, shrugging his shoulders.

Just then, the firewall hit the camp and every soldier inside began to burn, their screams echoing through the Voidwoods.

"You think that killed the leaders?" Arthur asked nervously, already knowing the answer. While he was confident in his strength, the gap between S+ and SS- was just that big. Maybe he could win against an SS- being, but it would be a close battle.

Valerian watched the soldiers burn with cold eyes, completely devoid of mercy.

"No, but it will get their attention."

And sure enough, inside the camp, as the biggest tent burned down, a dome of earth was revealed, completely unharmed and unscathed.

As the dome disintegrated, Valerian and Arthur locked eyes with the two commanders of the beastkin.

One of them was a large and muscular man with short brown hair and ears. He had bright amber eyes and sharp canines. With one look, Valerian knew he was of the Bearkin subspecies. He wore tactical armor that put a big emphasis on defense, with platings all over his body while still giving him enough mobility. He was the one that created the earth barrier. He had a massive hammer with a large chunk of crystal or rock on top of the handle.

Next to him was a female beastkin; she had a tall and lithe build. She had long black hair that blended in with the surrounding darkness. The feline ears on her head had the same color, and Valerian recognized her as a Panther subspecies. She had burning crimson slitted eyes that looked up at them with hatred and anger. Unlike her fellow commander, she wore tactical gear that focused more on agility and stealth, only using light armor to protect her vital spots. In her hands were two daggers that ended in a curved tip.

And both of them had the aura of SS- rank beings. Unlike the cave goblin who was also an SS- rank, they didn’t just break through a few days ago. They had been at that rank for over 5 years and knew their strength. If each of them were to fight the goblin chief, they would absolutely demolish him even though they were the same rank.

Like they knew instantly where the attackers were, they locked eyes with the flying Valerian and Arthur, neither of them backing down.

"I’ll take the big guy. He seems like a tank, and I have more firepower."

Arthur nodded. While he did have strong attacks, as shown with the firewall, he had less mana and was better in close range than Valerian, who was more of a mage type with his long-range spells.

"The other one seems like an assassin, so be careful."

"Don’t worry, I’m the super harem system protagonist. It’s more likely that she will fall for me than kill me," Arthur said, running a hand through his hair with an expression that made Valerian nauseous.

"Please stop... but seriously, be careful. They are strong. I can’t guarantee my win, so the great harem protagonist maybe needs to save me."

Arthur clapped Valerian on the back.

"Don’t worry, we will win. But let me analyze them first."

"Both have unique skills."

[Description]

[Unique Skill: Tectonic Armor: Compresses dense earth mana and kinetic energy directly onto the user’s skin and fur. Creates a heavily hardened layer that drastically absorbs both physical and magical damage while stabilizing the body against knockback, paralysis, and spatial disruption.]

[Description]

[Unique Skill: Absolute Perception: Heightens the user’s senses far beyond natural limits. Enables the direct perception of minute mana vibrations, breaths, heartbeats, and spatial distortions in the surrounding area.]

Arthur read the descriptions out for Valerian.

With a smile, Valerian folded the space around them and they appeared on the ground in the still-burning camp.

The two duos stood a few dozen meters away from each other. Valerian raised his hand and swiped to the side; following this motion, a cold breeze passed over the burning camp, putting out all the fire and leaving them with a clean battlefield.

"They are children? Why are they attacking us?" the big Bearkin asked, confused once he saw Valerian and Arthur closer.

"Doesn’t matter why. They did it, so they need to die," the Pantherkin answered coldly.

The tension between the two sides grew by the second, both just staring at the other. Like a silent agreement was made, they each dashed towards their dance partner.

Valerian and the Bearkin dashed towards each other at high speeds. A layer of brownish energy covered the Bearkin as he got closer to Valerian.

Once in striking distance, he raised his hammer, and the tip of it glowed in a silver hue before he brought it down with blinding speed.

Valerian saw the hammer close the distance to his head fast and realized that he was using his density affinity to increase the mass of the hammer mid-swing. If it were to hit him, Valerian wasn’t sure if even his physique could save him.

Before the hammer could absolutely obliterate him, he teleported behind the Bearkin. A black liquid came from his hand and formed into a black double-edged longsword with purple veins running along the blade. As he swung Twilight, silver lines like constellations followed behind, creating a beautiful effect.

But the beautiful effect didn’t help much as, before the blade could connect, a second layer of armor formed around the Bearkin, turning his already large build into a pure wall of earth.

As the blade hit the armor, all the momentum and power behind the attack disappeared, and not even a scratch appeared on the armor.

’Fuck.’

Instantly, the Bearkin spun around and delivered a bone-breaking, mountain-splitting punch into Valerian’s side, which he was barely able to somewhat block by bringing his arms down. But even then, he could feel his body protesting; if he still had bones, they were now fine powder.

The momentum of the punch catapulted Valerian far into the forest, where he crashed into a nearby mountain, throwing up a cloud of dust and debris.

The Bearkin just huffed a breath and propelled himself towards Valerian, completely shattering the earth underneath him.

A/N: God, I hate the way the status window looks in the Chapters -.- I’ll work on a different design in the future.
