On a broken battlefield with scorching hot plasma and freezing ice lying right next to each other, Valerian lay on the ground.
After using his newly acquired domain to kill Goran, he was completely out of mana. Even though his reserves were monstrous, they still couldn’t sustain his domain for more than a few seconds after fighting with Goran.
Valerian’s body didn’t look like it was injured, as he already healed himself with the mana he absorbed from Goran’s stone hammer, so from the outside he looked perfectly fine.
But inside he was tired. Not only did his mana barely refill enough for him to be conscious, the strain of using his domain and rewriting the laws around him left him with a deep exhaustion that would only fade once he had a good sleep.
Valerian propped himself up on his elbows from his lying position and looked for the first time at the battlefield left behind by his fight with the beastman.
’Damn, that [Cosmic Fire] and [Absolute Zero] combo had a lot of power. I should use it again in the future.’
-You should try other combinations as well.-
Valerian jumped up at the sudden voice that entered his head, but after a second he clearly recognized the voice.
’Valerie? So we can talk now?’
-Yeah, after the resonance, communication is now possible!-
Valerian let out a sigh at the excited voice of his sister. Once he stood, he noticed something else. He was naked again. The explosion after combining his two elements completely destroyed everything he was wearing.
’Why do I always end up naked!?’
Now it was becoming a pattern that annoyed Valerian; it seems that after every hard fight he would end up without clothes. And the worst part, he didn’t have enough mana yet to make new ones.
’Fuck it, I don’t want to wait.’
With the small amount he regained, Valerian reached into his pocket dimension and pulled out a pair of clothes that Freya packed beforehand for him.
While he was putting on the set of clothes, a sudden realization dawned on him.
’Valerie? You said that you were there since I was born, so do you mean you were always watching or...’
-Well... I couldn’t really choose to look away...-
Valerian stared blankly into the distance, thinking about everything he could remember since he was born, scanning his memories for anything embarrassing.
-Don’t worry! I thought some moments were cute! Like the times when Freya squeezed your cheeks until they were red. And I obviously can’t forget the time you and Sera mad—
’Okay, stop! You didn’t have to say all that! And is there really no way I can shut you out, at least for maybe a few hours?’
-It should work, but figure it out yourself.-
This time Valerian could clearly hear her pouting on the other side.
’Haaa, whatever...’
And Valerian just continued to get dressed in the new clothes.
After a few minutes he was finished. He wore a pair of black pants that were just tight enough that no fabric was in the way, without feeling like his legs were getting squeezed. He had a plain black shirt, and he also picked a shining silver jacket that extended halfway down his thigh. The inside of the jacket was made in a deep purple to represent the color of his eyes.
’I actually like this jacket, I need to steal the design with Twilight.’
Set to create his own version of the jacket once he had enough mana, Valerian began to walk to the spot where red painted the floor. It was the place where Goran died, or rather exploded from within.
Plates of his armor lay around the scene, as the only thing that got destroyed was his body. Valerian rummaged through the remains searching for something.
Not long after, he finally found what he was looking for in a pile of still wet flesh and what seemed to be broken bones.
From the pile of remains, Valerian pulled out a ring. It was silver with a small black gem in it. Runes ran down the ring in a design that Valerian could never mistake. And if the runes weren’t enough, now standing so close, Valerian could clearly feel the space mana around the ring.
It was Goran’s spatial storage ring. Putting the ring on his right middle finger, Valerian channeled a tiny bit of mana into it. Inside was mostly normal stuff: food, clothes, and coins. But scanning the contents, Valerian found what he was looking for and took it out of the ring.
It was a small notebook. The book had a dark red cover with the same wolf from the banners on it. It looked old and used, with pieces of paper sticking out of the side.
’Jackpot.’
-Are you looking for their orders?-
It was weird having someone in your head that can see what you are seeing, but Valerian didn’t mind it much, so he explained himself.
’Yes, I have to find out why they want to invade Solaria. Also, I need to know how many troops were dispatched. This could have been only one of many.’
After explaining his thought process, Valerian opened the notebook. The first few pages were a disappointment; it seemed that Goran used the book as a diary or maybe a protocol of what they did that day.
Valerian skipped through the pages, paying close attention to the text, not wanting to miss any important information. But Goran, in all his strength and might, apparently loved to write about the most useless stuff. What he ate that day, what he thought when he lay in bed; this guy even wrote about the shits he took and rated them from 1 to 10.
’What the fuck is wrong with this guy?’
-Please just continue...-
Even Valerie seemed disgusted at the weird writings of the bearman.
After skipping through way too many entries about his defecations, Valerian finally found a folded letter.
He carefully unfolded it. The letter had the wolf head, the banner of the Feralis Alliance, at the very top. Further below, it finally talked about the good part: the objective of the mission.
Objective: Infiltrate the Solaria Kingdom and destabilize their borders.
’That’s it? They didn’t even know why they had to infiltrate us?’
-Sigh, probably only the highest-ranking officers know the real objective, and while these two were definitely strong, they are not important enough to know the whole plan.-
Valerian nodded, agreeing with Valerie’s observation.
’We should regroup with Arthur and look around if there is maybe another camp around or if they were the only ones.’
Valerie didn’t answer, but Valerian felt that she agreed with him. Finally done, he put the notebook back inside the storage ring and threw the ring into his pocket dimension.
That was actually one of the special features of Valerian’s pocket dimension: it could hold spatial rings without a problem.
The reason for that is that a spatial ring works by compressing a fixed pocket of space into the ring with spatial runes.
The material of the ring plays a big importance, as it needs to have a high mana conductivity. And to make a ring with a vast storage capacity, the person inscribing the runes needs to be of a high rank.
That’s why rings with a large capacity are extremely expensive. Not only are rare materials for the ring itself needed, but also a person of a high rank to create rings that could hold an entire football field. And even then, the person inscribing it needs to specialize in spatial magic and runes, and since space is one of the rarest affinities, rings with large storage room become even more expensive.
But that isn’t how Valerian’s pocket dimension works; it doesn’t compress a fixed amount of space. It is literally another dimension, and every time Valerian takes something out or puts something inside, he opens a passage to this other dimension.
Putting an object infused with compressed space, like a storage ring, inside another storage ring would lead to the compressed space collapsing, and everything inside would be crushed by the collapsing space.
But putting a storage ring inside another dimension doesn’t mess with the compressed space, as it is just a dimension switch. And unlike spatial rings, his dimension can be expanded by increasing his mastery over space.
But until now, Valerian didn’t have a need to use spatial rings, as his pocket dimension always had more space than he needed.
Another thing that Valerian wants is to gain a time affinity. With it, he could create a discrepancy in the flow of time inside his dimension. Outside, only a day could pass, but inside the dimension, a week or maybe even a year.
But that was only an idea for now, as finding a beast with a time affinity is incredibly difficult, as time, like space, is one of the rarest elements.
Putting aside thoughts about dimensions and time, Valerian began his walk down the mountain and back towards the place Arthur was fighting.
