Valerian stabbed the tip of his katana into the body of a large mammoth-like beast; the thick hide wasn’t able to resist the cutting edge of Twilight. Valerian pushed a pulse of [Void Lightning] through the blade into the mammoth.
In a final yelp, the mammoth’s insides were erased. Valerian pulled Twilight out and stood there for a moment, looking at the scene in front of him.
Thousands of dead beasts, some only the size of a dog, others the size of a five-story building.
But all of them lay dead in front of him in an ocean of blood.
’Haa, final one.’
The mammoth was the last of the monster wave, well, almost the last one.
His glowing purple eyes settled in the distance, on a very specific spot at the edge of the battlefield.
Space folded around him, and he appeared in front of the still unconscious body of the Light Ape.
The ice around its cut-off limbs was still strong, even under the burning sun of the forest.
’Well, let’s do it.’
Clear blue ice formed around the ape, lifting it up from the ground so that its head was higher.
Valerian placed his hand on the large forehead of the ugly ape and channeled his mana into [Law Breaker].
Valerian’s mana invaded the ape’s body and tore through its mana veins, making its way to its core. The glowing core of the Light Ape tried to fight Valerian’s mana off, but to no avail.
[Law Breaker] invaded the core and slowly siphoned the light essence from the body. When the light essence left the core, the body of the ape began to change. The light coming off it began to dim, and the tail made from pure light slowly disappeared.
Its forehead frowned, but it was still out cold. Valerian continued to absorb the light element of the ape, integrating it into his own body.
After a few seconds, the light around the ape vanished completely, the frown on the ape’s forehead disappeared, and it went limp.
Light tore through Valerian’s body, weaving itself into his very being.
’Haa, it always feels great to get a new affinity.’
-EW, don’t moan into my ear like that, disgusting.-
The wonderful feeling disappeared at Valerie’s comment.
’Thanks for ruining my mood, sis.’
Valerie’s voice came back, annoyed.
-It’s your own fault for being so creepy.-
A vein popped on Valerian’s forehead.
’Shut it. Haaa, Status.’

’Well, that’s kind of short, but good enough I guess.’
Shrugging his shoulders, Valerian turned around and walked towards Arthur, who was descending towards him.
From the ice that was holding the ape, sharp spikes extended, piercing the ape’s motionless body from all sides and killing it on the spot.
As Arthur descended towards him, Valerian said:
"Had fun wat-"
*WHUUMW*
Before he could finish his sentence, a wave of mana crashed through the surroundings, and battle instincts took over instantly, putting Valerian and Arthur on edge.
"What was that?"
Arthur’s voice was nervous; he already had a guess, but he hoped that whatever that was, it wasn’t what he was thinking.
"It’s the thing they were running from," Valerian declared coldly. Even though they were both way stronger than their rank indicated, if something was able to make S+ rank monsters run for their lives, it wasn’t something they could face.
As the mana hit Valerian’s core, a strange resonance occurred.
Valerian felt it instantly, something inside him was reacting to the being. Focusing more on the feeling, he realized that it was his bloodline interacting with the mana wave.
’What is happening?’
Valerian was lost; he had no idea why his bloodline was suddenly reacting to the mana of the being in the distance.
But the strange feeling only intensified, and it soon became an overwhelming urge to go to the place the mana was coming from.
’Go there?’
Valerian wasn’t sure what to do. On one hand, why would his bloodline lead him somewhere dangerous? But on the other hand, they had no idea what this being was, only that it was overwhelmingly powerful.
He was torn between the two decisions, and Arthur noticed his struggle.
"What is happening? Don’t tell me you want to go there?"
The unease in his voice was clear; he didn’t want to go. And Valerian made a decision.
"I will go there. You don’t have to go with me, but my bloodline practically begs me to go wherever this mana is coming from."
Arthur looked at his friend with a blank face. He scratched his head in annoyance.
"Ahhh, why do you always have to be so extra! Just say ’Yes, Arthur, you are so right and handsome and smart!’ once!"
Seeing the emotional outburst from Arthur, a light giggle escaped him.
"You don’t have to come with me. I should be back soon... probably."
With that, Valerian took off into the air. Arthur looked at Valerian’s back, and with an annoyed and unwilling expression, he too ascended into the air.
When he caught up to Valerian, he turned in Arthur’s direction.
"Don’t even say anything, you owe me for this."
Valerian didn’t answer and just continued his flight with a light smile.
While they were closing the distance, the feeling his bloodline gave him only grew stronger.
’Just what is it?’
Valerian’s curiosity increased with every meter they crossed. And soon, he would see the figure that made his bloodline act so strangely.
It was huge. like, really, really huge.
It was so large that even some mountains would be put to shame.
’Is that...?’
"A Phoenix?"
Arthur finished Valerian’s thought, and he was right. In front of them was a mountain-sized phoenix.
It had a majestic body with pale blue flames dancing off it. The trees around it were strangely still intact, even though they were so close to the very being that personified fire and heat.
But instead of the symbol of vitality that a phoenix normally is, this one was laying on the ground with its flames flickering in and out of existence.
-It’s dying.-
Valerian could only agree with Valerie’s observation. The shallow breaths, the dying flames—somehow, the phoenix was dying.
When they got closer, the large phoenix raised its head, and its burning blue eyes locked onto Valerian instantly.
The feeling from his bloodline was now at its highest intensity.
’Why does it want me to go to the phoenix?’
Valerian didn’t understand, but he didn’t stop. Once he and Arthur got close enough, a low and ancient voice rolled through the air:
"Celestial... So the Stars haven’t abandoned us yet."
A/N: Hey Readers!
I’m finally back from my break. Yippie!!!
I just want to use this Author’s Note to share my thoughts on the story so far.
Well, how do I start... how about the things that I like!
I really love the way the power system developed, and I hope you liked it too! I also like the power kit Valerian has built for himself! Also, I really like his relationship with Arthur and Valerie. On the topic of Valerie, I want your opinion here: do you like her? And should she be a more active part with more dialogue, or should she stay as a kind of supporting voice that pops up now and then?
Now I want to talk about the things I don’t like...
The main thing I’m not satisfied with is the romance and Seraphine, well, to be more specific, her design.
What I did wrong with the romance, I think, is that I rushed it a bit too fast. But I have been thinking about it and want to slow it down during the academy arc; not by too much, just so it doesn’t develop too fast.
And now Seraphine’s design... in the beginning, I really liked the design I made for her: her long platinum blond hair with pink tips and golden eyes. But over the time I was gone, I have really been thinking about it, and I came to the conclusion that I want to change it.
So when we see her again, her hair and eye color will be different. How exactly, I’m not yet sure, but I’m leaning towards silver hair and blue eyes. If you have an idea or preference, please tell me and I will think about it.
Well, that sums about everything up. I’m back to writing Ascension of the Last Celestial, and you can expect daily uploads with maybe some one-day breaks when life gets stressful.
Thank you for sticking with me, and have fun reading!
Bye!
