The alarms were still screaming when the second wave hit.
Lian could barely stand. Blood still ran from the deep axe wound across his shoulder and chest, and every breath sent sharp pain through his damaged ribs. Elara had forced herself upright and was supporting most of his weight as they moved. Lirien walked ahead of them, her small figure calm, but the air around her had grown sharp and cold.
They never made it to the main exits of the underground arena.
The first sign was the sudden silence in the corridor ahead. Then the lights flickered. A heavy presence pressed down from multiple directions at once — not one overwhelming aura like the Star 5 hunter, but several strong signatures moving in coordinated formation.
Lirien stopped.
“Ten,” she said quietly. “Mixed levels. Two at Star 3. Four at Star 2. The rest at late Core Condensation to Star 1. They are coordinating. The first hunter must have called them in before he fled.”
Elara’s grip on Lian tightened. “Can we reach the ship?”
“We will,” Lirien replied. Her voice was soft, almost gentle. “None of them will leave this place alive.”
A plasma bolt screamed down the corridor and exploded against the wall near Lian’s head. The heat scorched his skin. Figures in heavy combat gear poured into the far end of the passage — bounty hunters of different species and aug configurations, all carrying the glowing markers of active contracts.
The lead hunter, a heavily auged human with a glowing red optic, raised his voice.
“Targets confirmed. Void-eyes and the half-aug. Alive if possible. Dead if necessary. The little one is secondary — eliminate if she interferes.”
Lirien’s violet eyes turned cold.
“Stay behind me.”
What followed was not a battle.
It was an execution.
Lirien moved.
She did not run. She simply walked forward, and the air itself became a weapon. The first hunter — a Star 2 with dual plasma cutters — raised his weapons. Before he could fire, an invisible force crushed his chest cavity inward with a wet, final sound. He dropped without a scream.
Two more charged from a side corridor. Lirien flicked her small fingers. Both men were slammed into opposite walls hard enough to leave deep impact craters in the reinforced plating. Their augs sparked and died. Neither moved again.
The remaining hunters opened fire in a coordinated barrage. Plasma bolts, kinetic rounds, and energy lances filled the corridor. Lirien raised one hand. The air in front of her distorted into a translucent barrier that absorbed and dispersed every shot. The floor beneath the hunters suddenly twisted upward in sharp, jagged spikes of metal and force. Three of them were impaled before they could react. The others tried to scatter.
They did not get far.
A Star 3 hunter with heavy shield augs tried to close the distance, roaring as he activated a full-power charge. Lirien looked at him once. The man’s shield flared brightly... then shattered. A moment later his body folded in on itself as if crushed by an invisible giant’s hand. Blood and broken aug components sprayed across the corridor.
The last four tried to retreat and regroup.
Lirien did not allow it.
She stepped through the smoke and debris as if taking a quiet stroll. One hunter activated a short-range displacement device, attempting to flee the same way the Star 5 had earlier. Lirien’s eyes narrowed. The displacement field collapsed mid-activation. The man reappeared a meter away, already dead, his body neatly separated at the waist.
The final three made a desperate last stand near a junction. They fired everything they had. Lirien walked through the storm of energy unharmed. With three precise, almost casual gestures, she ended them. One collapsed with his throat crushed. Another was driven into the ceiling hard enough to embed him in the metal. The last simply stopped moving, his life force snuffed out like a candle.
Silence fell.
The corridor was a ruin of blood, broken armor, and scorched walls. Ten bounty hunters lay dead. Not one had escaped. Not one had managed to land a meaningful blow on the small silver-haired girl who now stood calmly in the center of the carnage.
Lirien turned back to Lian and Elara. Her expression had returned to its usual gentle neutrality.
“It is finished,” she said. “We should return to the ship before local enforcement finishes locking down the sector. The contract will still exist, but these particular hunters will not trouble us again.”
Elara stared at the destruction, her face pale. Lian, leaning heavily against her, looked at Lirien with a complicated mixture of relief and renewed understanding of just how vast the gap between them truly was.
They moved.
No one else tried to stop them.
By the time the trading hub’s heavy enforcement units reached the lower corridors, the only things left were bodies and the fading echoes of a one-sided slaughter.
The ship’s ramp sealed behind them.
Engines ignited.
They left the hub behind in a clean, decisive burn toward open space.
Lian collapsed into the medical bay the moment they were clear, blood loss finally catching up to him. Elara stayed at his side. Lirien stood near the doorway, already beginning diagnostic scans.
