They thought they had gone far enough.

The ancient ship cut through the black at high speed, putting distance between itself and the trading hub. Behind them, the floating city had become a shrinking cluster of lights. The immediate chaos of the bounty hunter attack was behind them. Lian lay in the medical bay, the healing systems working to close the deep axe wound and stabilize his damaged ribs. Elara sat beside the recovery platform, her own injuries already sealed by the ship’s medical drones. For a short time, there was only the steady hum of the engines and the quiet beep of monitoring systems.

Then the alarms started screaming.

Red light flooded the corridors. A sharp, repeating tone cut through the ship. The internal systems shifted instantly into combat readiness.

Lirien was already moving.

She left the medical bay without a word, her small feet carrying her quickly through the corridors toward the control room. By the time she reached the main console, holographic displays had bloomed across the entire forward section of the bridge. Multiple red markers burned on the tactical map.

“Six pursuit craft,” Lirien said, her voice calm but precise. “Two heavy interceptors. Four lighter attack ships. They locked onto our trail faster than expected. The contract must have been escalated.”

She turned slightly, issuing commands in a clear, authoritative tone.

“All combat robots to weapons stations. Primary energy batteries online. Point-defense turrets active. Prepare broadside lances. Do not wait for further confirmation — fire on my mark.”

Throughout the ship, the worker and combat robots responded instantly. Heavy weapon ports opened along the hull. Energy capacitors charged with a rising hum that vibrated through the decks. Targeting systems locked onto the approaching vessels.

In the medical bay, Lian forced his eyes open as the alarms continued. The healing systems had closed the worst of the external wounds, but his body was still weak. Elara’s hand rested on the edge of the platform, her expression tight.

“They’re still coming,” she said.

Lian’s voice was rough. “How many?”

“Enough.”

On the bridge, Lirien’s violet eyes tracked the closing distance. The pursuit ships were accelerating hard, trying to cut off their escape vector. The two heavy interceptors were already within extreme weapons range.

Lirien did not hesitate.

“Fire.”

The ship shuddered as the primary energy batteries unleashed.

Two brilliant lances of concentrated power tore across the void. The first struck the lead interceptor dead-center. The vessel’s shields flared for less than a second before collapsing. The lance punched through the hull and detonated the internal power core. The interceptor vanished in a silent white bloom of debris and expanding gas.

The second lance hit the trailing heavy ship a moment later. This one managed a partial evasion, but not enough. The beam sheared through its starboard engine cluster and secondary weapons array. Secondary explosions rippled along its hull. The ship went dark, tumbling out of control as escape pods began ejecting.

Two ships destroyed in the opening exchange.

The remaining four attack craft scattered, trying to adjust their approach. Lirien’s hands moved across the controls with cold precision. Point-defense turrets opened up in disciplined bursts, forcing the lighter ships to break formation. One of them caught a glancing hit that sheared off a stabilizer fin. Another took a direct pulse from a secondary battery and lost power, drifting dead in the void.

“Continue acceleration,” Lirien ordered. “Shift to evasive pattern three. Do not allow them to surround us.”

The ancient ship surged forward, engines burning harder. The remaining pursuit craft tried to maintain lock, but the gap began to widen. Their lighter frames could not match the sustained output of the older, more powerful vessel once it committed to a clean escape burn.

In the medical bay, the vibrations of the weapons fire and engine surge rattled the walls. Lian stared up at the ceiling, listening to the distant thrum of power. Elara remained at his side, her thunder blade within easy reach even though there was nothing she could do from inside the ship.

After several long minutes, the alarms shifted from combat red to a lower-alert amber.

Lirien’s voice came over the internal comms, clear and steady.

“Two pursuit ships destroyed. Two more disabled. The remaining craft are breaking off. We are clear of immediate weapons range. Continuing on an evasive course toward the outer edge of this sector.”

The ship flew on through the black.
