Ashes of the star forge

They finished their sparse preparations in silence.

Lian checked the empty storage ring on his finger out of habit, even though he already knew it held nothing of real value. Elara secured her thunder blade and adjusted the simple camping gear they had been left with. The dense nutrient rations were divided evenly. The light crystal was dimmed and stored. Outside the cave, the endless winds of Veythara’s Grave continued their howling assault, and the crushing atmospheric pressure remained a constant weight on every breath.

They were ready to move.

Lian stepped toward the cave mouth first, extending his perception as far as the oppressive environment allowed. For a moment, everything felt the same as it had through the long night — wind, distant roars, the slow grind of stone under pressure.

Then something shifted.

It was not a sound. It was not a clear life signature. It was a wrongness in the air, a subtle distortion that brushed against the edge of his senses like cold fingers. Lian’s body reacted before his mind fully processed it.

“Guard up,” he said sharply.

Elara moved instantly. They turned back-to-back in the center of the chamber, weapons ready. Lian forced the black liquid out along his right forearm and hand, shaping it into a dense, matte-black blade. Elara’s thunder blade hummed to life, faint arcs of blue lightning crawling along its edge. Both of them listened. Both of them waited.

The attack came without warning.

Something invisible slammed into Lian from the side with crushing force. He barely managed to interpose the black blade in time. The impact still drove him sideways into the cave wall hard enough to crack stone. Pain flared through his still-healing ribs. He tasted blood.

Elara spun toward the source and slashed. Her blade cut only empty air. A second later an unseen force raked across her shoulder, tearing through the simple clothing Lirien had left them and drawing a line of dark blood. She staggered but kept her footing, lightning flaring brighter along her weapon.

They could not see it.

Whatever hunted them in the cave made no sound and left no visible form. It moved with terrifying speed and precision, striking from angles that made defense almost impossible. Lian’s perception caught only fragmented distortions — brief, slippery impressions that vanished the moment he tried to focus on them. Elara’s cybernetic senses fared little better. The creature, or force, existed just outside the range of normal detection.

A third strike nearly took Lian’s head. He dropped low and rolled, the black blade lashing out in a wide arc. He felt the edge catch on something solid for a fraction of a second — a brief, satisfying resistance — before the contact vanished. A low, resonant vibration shivered through the cave, as if the thing had been hurt, but it did not fully materialize.

“We can’t win this,” Elara said through gritted teeth, blood running down her arm. “Not here.”

Lian knew she was right. The pressure of the planet already taxed their bodies. Fighting an invisible predator that could strike from any direction while they remained confined in the cave was a losing proposition. Staying meant death.

“Run,” he ordered.

They broke for the entrance together.

The moment they crossed into the open air of the plateau, the full force of Veythara’s Grave hit them again — howling wind, biting grit, and the crushing atmospheric weight. Behind them, something large and unseen surged out of the cave in pursuit. The ground trembled under heavy, rapid impacts that left no visible footprints. Loose stones were kicked aside by an invisible mass. The air itself seemed to part around a shape that refused to be seen.

Lian and Elara sprinted along the narrow ridge, forced to divide their attention between the treacherous terrain and the thing closing in behind them. Lian shaped more of the black liquid into short spikes and launched them backward without looking. Most missed. One struck something with a wet, solid sound and drew another of those low, angry vibrations.

Elara risked a backward glance and sent a focused arc of lightning from her blade. The energy crackled through the air and illuminated — for the briefest instant — a massive, shifting outline of too many limbs and a body that seemed only partially anchored in normal space. Then the lightning dispersed and the shape vanished from sight again.

The chase continued across the broken plateau.

Every step was a struggle against the planet’s pressure. Their lungs burned. Their muscles screamed. The unseen predator gained ground with terrifying ease, as if the harsh environment did not affect it at all. Twice it nearly caught them with sweeping, invisible strikes that forced desperate last-moment dodges. Once it clipped Lian’s leg hard enough to send him stumbling. Only Elara’s quick grab kept him from going over the edge of a deep fissure.

They needed distance. They needed terrain that might slow it down. They needed anything other than open ground.

Ahead, the plateau dropped into a maze of jagged rock spires and narrow cuts. Lian pointed wordlessly. They plunged into the broken landscape, using the stone formations for cover, changing direction whenever possible, never staying in a straight line long enough for the pursuer to predict their path.

The invisible thing followed.

Its presence pressed against their senses like a cold weight. Every small sound — the scrape of their boots, the rattle of dislodged stones, their own ragged breathing — felt dangerously loud. The planet itself seemed to watch as the hunt continued.
