They kept running.

The invisible predator refused to give up. Every time Lian and Elara thought they had gained a few precious meters, the air behind them would distort and another crushing strike would force them to dodge or block. The black liquid along Lian’s arm hardened repeatedly under the impacts. Elara’s thunder blade flashed in sharp arcs, occasionally catching the unseen body and drawing those low, resonant vibrations of pain, but never enough to stop the chase.

The maze of jagged rock spires offered only temporary cover. The creature moved through the broken terrain with terrifying ease, its invisible bulk smashing aside smaller stones and leaping across gaps that forced the two cultivators to scramble. The planet’s crushing pressure and howling winds never eased. Every breath burned. Every step drained them further.

After what felt like an endless stretch of desperate flight, the presence behind them finally began to fade.

Lian risked a glance back. The distortions in the air had lessened. The heavy impacts no longer shook the ground as closely. For the first time since leaving the cave, a narrow gap of relative safety opened.

“I think we lost it,” Elara said between ragged breaths, lightning still faintly crackling along her blade.

Lian did not relax. His perception remained stretched to its limit under the oppressive atmosphere. “Keep moving. Don’t stop until—”

The ground ahead of them erupted.

A massive shape tore upward through a layer of black stone and loose scree, rising to its full height in a shower of debris. This one was not invisible.

It was enormous.

The creature stood nearly four meters tall, its body a dense mass of overlapping black plates that looked more like volcanic rock than flesh. Four powerful limbs ended in heavy, hooked claws. A broad, angular head sat low between armored shoulders, with a single vertical slit of glowing crimson where eyes should have been. Dark mist leaked from the gaps between its plates with every movement, and the pressure rolling off it was unmistakable — Stellar Circuit Star 1, the same level as Lian.

The monster let out a deep, grinding roar that vibrated through the stone beneath their feet.

There was no time to run again.

The beast charged.

Lian and Elara met it together.

The first exchange was overwhelming. The creature’s raw power and mass turned every swing of its claws into a devastating force. Lian blocked one downward strike with the black blade and felt the impact travel all the way through his bones. He was driven to one knee. Elara slipped to the side and delivered a lightning-wreathed cut across its flank. The blade carved a shallow groove in the black plating and drew a spray of dark, viscous fluid, but the monster barely slowed.

A backhanded sweep of its claw caught Lian across the chest and hurled him into a nearby spire of rock. Pain exploded through his still-healing ribs. He forced himself up in time to see Elara forced onto pure defense, her thunder blade flashing desperately as the creature hammered her with relentless blows. Each impact sent cracks of lightning scattering across the ground.

They were being overwhelmed.

The black liquid surged harder inside Lian as he rejoined the fight. He shaped it into short, dense spikes and drove them toward the gaps in the monster’s plating. One found a seam near the shoulder joint and sank deep. The creature roared and spun, catching him with a glancing claw that opened a fresh line of blood across his upper arm. Elara used the opening to land two more precise cuts, targeting the same damaged section.

Little by little, the tide began to shift.

The monster’s movements grew a fraction heavier. Dark fluid leaked more steadily from the wounds they had managed to inflict. Its charges became slightly less controlled. The endless stamina it had shown at the start of the fight was no longer absolute. The harsh environment of Veythara’s Grave taxed even its adapted body when forced into prolonged, high-intensity combat against two coordinated opponents.

Lian felt the change.

He stopped giving ground and began to match the creature’s rhythm more closely. When the next heavy claw came down, he stepped inside the arc and drove the black blade upward into the underside of its arm joint. At the same moment Elara’s lightning blade carved across the back of its knee plating. The monster staggered.

For the first time since the fight began, they were no longer purely on the defensive.

The three of them clashed again in the center of the broken terrain — black liquid blade, crackling thunder edge, and massive stone-like claws meeting in a storm of force and flying debris. The monster was still stronger in pure power. It was still dangerous. But the overwhelming advantage it had held at the start had narrowed.

They were fighting on equal terms.
