Ryzek Vorn had been tracking the disturbance for most of the morning.
The northern ridges of this sector were rarely quiet, but the pattern of movement he had been following was unusual. Predators on Veythara’s Grave usually hunted alone or in loose, temporary pairs. What he was sensing now was different — coordinated, patient, and far more deliberate than the normal ravager packs or opportunistic scavengers.
He moved along a high spine of black stone, four amber eyes narrowed against the constant grit-filled wind. The crystalline ridges along his arms caught the dull light as he kept his energy tightly compressed, reducing his presence as much as possible. On this planet, being noticed too early was often the same as being dead.
The signatures sharpened as he drew closer.
Four of them.
They were spread across a broken slope of jagged rock and shallow fissures, moving with a strange, overlapping rhythm. Ryzek slowed further and found a concealed vantage point behind a tilted slab of stone. From there he watched.
At first there was nothing to see.
Then the air itself seemed to bend.
A distortion passed between two large boulders — not a heat shimmer, not wind, but a deliberate warping of space that made the stone behind it ripple like water. A second distortion followed several meters to the left. Then a third. The fourth remained higher on the slope, almost completely still, as if watching the others.
Phase Stalkers.
But not the common ones.
Ryzek’s tail flicked once behind him. The pressure coming off these four was significantly heavier than any Phase Stalker he had encountered in his eleven months on the planet. The common ones were dangerous enough — difficult to detect, fast, and capable of killing an unprepared Star 1 or 2 cultivator with little effort. These four sat at a different level entirely. Star 4 at minimum. Possibly Star 5. Their presence pressed against his senses like cold weight even while they remained partially phased out of normal space.
He stayed perfectly still and continued observing.
The four Stalkers were not hunting in the usual solitary fashion. They were sweeping the slope in a loose but coordinated pattern, checking fissures, testing the air, and occasionally releasing short, low-frequency vibrations that Ryzek felt more in his bones than through his ears. It was a search pattern. Methodical. Patient.
Something had drawn their attention to this area.
Ryzek did not move for a long time. He watched the way the distortions shifted, the way the lead Stalker — the one higher on the slope — would occasionally pause and turn its unseen head toward the deeper ridges further south. There was purpose in the movement. These were not simply roaming for food. They were looking for something specific.
Or someone.
The wind howled across the ridge, carrying grit that stung against his crystalline ridges. Ryzek ignored it. His focus remained locked on the four invisible predators below. He tracked their positions by the subtle wrongness they left in the air and by the occasional displacement of loose stone when one of them shifted its weight too heavily while partially materialized.
One of the lower Stalkers suddenly stopped.
The air around it tightened. For a brief moment the distortion deepened, and Ryzek caught the faintest impression of a long, low body with too many joints and a head that seemed only loosely anchored to the rest of the form. Then the impression vanished again as the creature fully phased.
It had sensed something.
Not him. The direction was wrong. The Stalker’s attention had turned further south and slightly east — toward a series of broken plateaus and cave systems that Ryzek had not yet surveyed in detail today.
The other three responded within moments. Their search pattern shifted. The loose formation tightened. The low-frequency vibrations increased. Whatever they had detected, it was enough to change their behavior from broad sweeping to focused movement.
Ryzek remained unmoving behind his slab of stone.
He did not yet know what had drawn four high-level Phase Stalkers into a coordinated hunt. He only knew that anything capable of holding the attention of predators at this level was either very unlucky... or very interesting.
He settled in to watch longer.
