Ryzek followed the four Phase Stalkers at a careful distance for nearly half an hour.
He kept his presence tightly compressed, moving only when the terrain and wind allowed it, always maintaining enough separation that even their heightened senses would struggle to isolate him from the background noise of the planet. The distortions that marked the Stalkers’ positions continued their deliberate southward advance, occasionally pausing to test the air or release those low, bone-deep vibrations. Whatever they were tracking, they were committed to it.
Then the wind shifted.
A new pressure rolled across the ridges — heavier, denser, and fundamentally different from the cold, slippery presence of the Phase Stalkers. Ryzek stopped immediately and dropped into the partial cover of a fractured outcrop. His four amber eyes narrowed. The crystalline ridges along his arms tightened as he further restrained his energy.
Something else had entered the area.
The Phase Stalkers felt it too. Their coordinated pattern broke for the first time since he had begun watching them. The four distortions scattered wide, then slowly reconverged, taking up positions that suggested caution rather than continued hunting. They had not fled. But they had acknowledged a greater presence.
Ryzek waited.
Minutes passed under the howling wind and the grinding weight of the atmosphere. Then, through a gap in the black stone spires ahead, the source of the new pressure finally came into view.
It was not a Phase Stalker.
The creature stood nearly six meters at the shoulder, its body a massive, low-slung frame of overlapping plates that looked like cooled magma shot through with deep crimson veins. Four thick legs ended in broad, crushing feet that left shallow craters in the stone where it walked. Along its spine ran a series of jagged, crystalline growths that pulsed with a slow, internal light. Its head was broad and heavily armored, with a single wide maw filled with interlocking stone-like teeth and no visible eyes. Instead, a cluster of sensitive tendrils extended from the sides of its skull, tasting the air and the residual energy of the environment.
Stellar Circuit Star 7.
The pressure rolling off it was immense. Even at this distance, Ryzek felt the weight of it pressing against his own cultivation, testing the edges of his control. This was not a predator that relied on stealth or speed. It was a creature of pure, overwhelming presence — the kind of apex lifeform that claimed entire sectors of the planet as its territory and tolerated no lasting challengers.
The magma-plated beast moved with slow, deliberate steps, each one carrying the certainty of something that had never needed to rush. The crimson veins across its body brightened slightly as the tendrils along its head swept toward the area where the Phase Stalkers had gathered. It had noticed them.
The four high-level Stalkers held their positions, still partially phased, but the tension in the air was clear even from Ryzek’s distant vantage. They were strong. Star 4 and Star 5 Phase Stalkers were apex hunters in their own right. Yet none of them advanced. None of them challenged the larger creature. They simply watched it, the same way lesser predators watched something that could end them without effort.
Ryzek remained motionless behind the outcrop.
He had seen Star 7 lifeforms on Veythara’s Grave only three times in eleven months. Each encounter had ended the same way: he left the area as quickly and quietly as possible. Creatures at that level did not need to hunt the way lesser predators did. Their mere passage through a region often killed weaker lifeforms through pressure alone. Engaging one was not courage. It was suicide for anyone below the higher Star ranks... and even then, the outcome was never certain.
The massive beast released a low, grinding sound that resonated through the stone beneath Ryzek’s feet. The Phase Stalkers shifted farther back. The crimson veins along the creature’s plates pulsed once more, then settled. After a long moment, it turned its bulk and began moving toward the deeper mountain range to the west, each step slow and final.
The four Stalkers did not follow.
They remained in the area, their distortions lingering like unresolved questions.
Ryzek exhaled carefully, still keeping his presence suppressed.
A Star 7 territorial beast.
Four coordinated high-level Phase Stalkers.
