Ashes of the star forge

Chapter 167: Ryzek path (3)

The tension broke without warning.

One of the Phase Stalkers — the highest among the four, carrying the weight of a solid Star 5 — shifted its distortion forward a fraction too aggressively. The Star 7 magma-plated beast responded instantly. A low, grinding roar rolled out of its armored maw, and the crimson veins across its body flared bright. The nearest crystalline growths along its spine discharged a heavy pulse of force that slammed into the slope and shattered black stone into flying shards.

The four Stalkers abandoned all pretense of caution.

They attacked together.

Ryzek remained perfectly still behind his outcrop, four amber eyes locked on the sudden violence unfolding below. The Phase Stalkers flickered in and out of visibility, their partially phased bodies allowing them to strike from angles that normal creatures could not defend. Long, unseen limbs raked across the magma plates, seeking seams. Low-frequency vibrations hammered at the larger beast’s balance. For a moment it looked as if the four coordinated hunters might actually press the advantage of numbers and stealth.

Then the Star 7 showed why it stood at that level.

It stopped trying to track the individual distortions. Instead it released a wide, crushing wave of pure pressure and heat from its body. The air itself rippled. Two of the Stalkers were forced into full materialization under the weight of it — long, low, multi-jointed forms with too many limbs and heads that seemed only loosely connected to their torsos. The moment they became solid, the magma beast’s massive forelimb smashed down. One Stalker was driven into the stone hard enough to crack its outer carapace. Dark fluid sprayed. The second barely twisted aside, leaving a deep furrow in the ground where it had been.

The remaining two Stalkers pressed the attack from opposite sides, but the pattern was already clear. They could wound it. They could harass it. They could not bring it down quickly.

Ryzek watched with cold patience.

This was the opportunity he had been waiting for.

A fight of this scale would draw attention across a wide area. The noise, the spilled blood, the violent fluctuations of energy — all of it would pull other predators toward the conflict. More importantly, a sufficiently large and well-placed blow could shift the momentum of the battle and give him a chance to redirect the survivors.

He waited until the Star 7 reared back to release another pressure pulse.

Then he moved.

Ryzek rose from cover just long enough to gather a dense spear of compressed amber energy above his palm. He poured more power into it than he normally risked in a single attack, shaping the energy until the air around it distorted. The moment the magma beast’s chest was most exposed — plates shifted by the motion of its roar — he launched the spear with every bit of force he could safely channel under the planet’s drain.

The amber projectile crossed the distance in a blink and punched into the seam between two of the larger plates on the creature’s shoulder.

The result was immediate and violent.

A deep, resonant crack echoed across the ridges. Crimson fluid and shattered crystalline fragments sprayed from the impact site. The Star 7 staggered sideways with a roar that shook loose stones from the surrounding spires. Its attention — and its rage — snapped toward the source of the sudden, serious wound.

Ryzek was already moving.

He broke from the outcrop and fled along a prepared route that angled south-east, toward the broader path leading to the sunken basin and the tomb. He did not hide his presence now. He deliberately let bursts of his energy flare as he ran and used short, efficient bursts of flight to stay ahead of the immediate retaliation.

Behind him, the wounded Star 7 bellowed and began to pursue.

The Phase Stalkers, opportunistic to the end, harried the larger beast’s flanks as it turned, adding their own attacks to the chaos. The entire violent mass of the conflict began to shift in Ryzek’s direction.

He did not need to defeat any of them.

He only needed them to follow.

Blood trailed from the Star 7’s fresh wound. The Stalkers’ distortions flickered in and out as they chased the opportunity of a weakened apex predator. The noise of the running battle rolled across the northern ridges, announcing the conflict to everything within a wide radius.
