The chaos on the chamber floor continued to escalate.
The magma-plated beast tore through another golden vine with a wet, grinding sound, spraying dark fluid across the stone. Pale vines still harvested the six-legged hunters in clusters, coiling and constricting with relentless rhythm. Phase Stalker distortions flickered in and out at the edges, taking shallow cuts wherever an opening appeared. The noise was constant — snarls, impacts, the wet snap of breaking limbs, and the low resonant pulses from the tree itself.
Elara and Ryzek remained high on the wall, bodies pressed flat, breathing shallow and controlled.
Then one of the six-legged hunters near the edge of the melee stopped mid-turn.
Its four eyes lifted.
It stared directly up at the section of wall where Elara clung to the stone.
For a single heartbeat nothing happened. Then the creature released a sharp, barking call and launched itself upward, six legs finding brief purchase on the uneven surface as it scrambled toward her position with startling speed.
Elara moved.
She pushed off the wall in a short lateral burst and cut downward with her blade as the hunter closed the distance. The edge caught it across the face and one forward-facing eye. The creature shrieked and fell back into the press of bodies below, but the damage was done. Several other hunters had seen the motion. Two more broke from the main fight and started climbing. A third took a different route along a protruding ridge of stone, trying to cut off her lateral movement.
Ryzek was already dealing with his own problem.
A Phase Stalker distortion had locked onto his position. The air in front of him warped, and an unseen limb raked across the stone where his chest had been a moment earlier. He dropped several meters in a controlled fall, amber energy flaring along one arm as he struck back at the distortion. The impact connected with something solid. A low, pained vibration answered him, but the Stalker did not fully materialize. It simply shifted and came again from a different angle.
The living gate noticed the secondary movement as well.
A cluster of thinner pale vines peeled away from the floor battle and lashed upward toward the wall. They were not as thick as the golden ones, but there were many of them, and they moved with the same coordinated precision as before. Elara was forced to cut three in rapid succession while still tracking the climbing hunters. One vine wrapped briefly around her ankle before she severed it. Another scraped across her shoulder plating and left a shallow, burning line.
Below, the main chaos continued without pause. The magma beast was still locked in its exchange with the golden vines. The majority of the six-legged pack remained committed to surviving the tree’s primary assault. But enough individual creatures had broken away to make the upper walls dangerous.
Elara killed the second climbing hunter with a clean thrust through the neck as it reached her level. The body fell. The third one leapt from its ridge and forced her to meet it in short, brutal contact against the wall. Claws scraped across her forearm plating. She drove her blade up under its jaw and kicked the dying weight away.
Ryzek’s situation was tighter. The Phase Stalker kept pressing him, and two pale vines had begun trying to pin his position against the stone. He carved through one vine and released a compressed burst of amber energy that forced the Stalker to phase fully out of reach for a moment. His four amber eyes flicked once toward Elara, checking her status, then returned to the immediate threats.
The wall was no longer safe.
More eyes from the floor battle were beginning to lift in their direction as the fighting shifted and opened new sight lines. The longer they stayed elevated and engaged, the more attention they would draw from both the predators and the tree itself.
Elara cut another reaching vine, planted her feet against the stone, and prepared to move again.
