Assassinate Wonderwind [Book 1 Completed!]
B2 Chapter 17 - Queen Of Aetherdale Part OneIt had been a while since monsters in Wonderwind caused anything resembling panic in me.
But holy shit, that was a level 539 boss monster. I’d never seen anything close to that. Even Heywin, the Great Dragon, wasn’t close.
I scanned the closest escape route into the city, knowing that this wasn’t a fight we could take head-on. I probably had to jump off of the battlements.
[Conflagration] fired right in between Shaltar and the three knights, casting [Torment] on everyone.
Shit. Veyra wasn’t planning on fighting this, was she?
Another [Conflagration] hit, and Istvan, the third knight, dove at me spear first from the sky. I gritted my teeth and jump rolled to the side, managing to dodge without [Shadow Dash].
The swing of his spear came like a fly swatter about to splash me against the wall, and a colorful blast of a spell I had no time to identify was about to one-shot me.
I [Shadow Dashed] backward on the battlements as far from the bosses as I could, landing around fifty feet from Veyra. I spotted a message from her.
Veyra: “Keep kiting, they’ll die eventually.”
I glanced at their health bars. The knights were at 95% and Shaltar at 96%.
No way. This would take ages. There was no way in hell I could dodge everything for long enough. There were four bosses all higher level than the Portal Mage! Could I even get them to the cheese spot safely?
Shaltar sprung to speed with a mad grin on her face. She ran through another cast of [Conflagration], her bloodshot eyes aimed at my head. Each step was practically a leap, fast enough that I couldn’t outrun her. My only option was to dodge when she reached me.
Ten paces away, she paused in place and she readied her sickles for a swipe.
Alarm bells rang in my head. I’d played enough video games to know that if a monster paused in a swinging stance, I needed to dodge right there and then.
I ducked, and Shaltar exploded with momentum, her sickles cutting the air where my head had just been. My heart skipped a beat from the sheer speed of her movements. That attack was beyond inhuman.
A light uppercut followed—not really even an attack, just her lifting her sickle back up. I blocked with The Immortal for a perfect block.
The air was knocked out of my lungs as I cannoned straight to the air.

[Straight Attacks Are 100% More Effective When Under 40% Health]
Dark spirits fluttered around her limbs and her torso, flaring like little purple flames. Shaltar jumped after me—or rather, launched herself into the air like a bullet. Her mad grin sent me chills, reminding me of the exact way I’d died to Annath in our first match at Worlds.
Once I was in the air, I couldn’t do anything. Dodging was impossible, and perfect blocks were never reliable without a strong footing to support the stance. And if a ranged attack came…
The spirits formed a runic spell circle, like a large halo above Shaltar’s head. Two translucent blue sickles appeared, both larger than the attic I was playing the game from. She swung at me from a range, and a gigantic sickle crashed down on my head.
I spammed [Shadow Dash] with a fraction of a second on its cooldown, and I thanked the lords when the dash went through before my throat was cut. I dashed down, back to the battlements, where I could actually move.
Her second sickle was already cutting my landing spot, predicting exactly where I was about to go. I raised my daggers for a desperate block.
Immediately upon lifting my daggers, I realized I was fucked—there was no blocking that. The sickle cut me and the battlements, taking my health to zero percent.

I blinked as my health rose to thirty percent. I’d forgotten Veyra still had that spellbook. She usually left it in storage to avoid the risk of dropping a mythic spellbook.
Still alive!
Shaltar fell and swung mid-air at Veyra with the giant sickles. I gritted my teeth, but I couldn’t help her right now. She needed to portal out.
The three knights faced me on the battlements, all burning from [Torment]. Titan formed an X with his swords. He swung, and ranged projectiles shot forth. Istvan and Hound flew alongside the projectile on both sides of the battlements. Hound’s mace slammed at the side of the structure.
I left an [Afterimage] in place and ducked under the X of Titan’s attack. Istvan killed my afterimage, and my footing shook by Hound’s mace, the battlements beginning to crumble.
I saw an angle to counter-attack Istvan. [Astral Rage] was still active; I could have thrust Sablethorn into his heart.
No, I thought. Attacking was useless. I wouldn’t do any damage even with max defence stolen. I instead dove to the left, jumping off of the battlements through the opening where the wall was cracking open.
Bits of stone fell alongside me as my lunge dodged another attack by luck. So many bullshit colors and spells flew around that I couldn’t track everything that tried to kill me.
Wings flapped as the knights dove after me, Hound’s mace about to crush me against the wall.
[Shadow Dash] was my only savior as four seconds just passed. I changed direction entirely, dashing back to the battlements.
Back up, I had a few free seconds of pause while the knights turned their flights upward. Not nearly enough to catch my breath, but enough to replenish [Shadow Dash] yet again. If there was one spell Wind Virtual should have nerfed, it was my dash. Without it, I would have died ten times over.
I spared a glance at the knights’ health bars, and light sparkled in my eyes when I saw they were at 73%. Holy shit, Veyra was actually doing damage.
Still, my stamina was already running out. Every simple movement required me to go all out, and a mistake would get me one-shotted.
I heard a sharp swipe from my left, and Shaltar’s flying figure forced me straight back to dodging. I managed to sidestep her first attack as she landed right next to me.
Her sickles attacked rampantly. I retreated backward, staying just outside her range. I dodged the first four attacks, until she growled, her eyes bloodshot.
I side-stepped her heavy attack prematurely. Shaltar dashed with inhuman speed to slash at where I’d just been.
One pattern learned, I thought. Every time Shaltar paused or growled, as if growing impatient after missing a few blows, she’d throw a lightning fast attack that could only be dodged with prediction.
[Conflagration] hit her, while her attack rotation continued. I backed off from her regular sickle swipes, keeping her out of range, before side-stepping a heavier thrust.
That was when I noticed my health bar was at 13% and going down. I was also getting hit by [Conflagration]. I dashed backward and quickly drank a health potion, going back up to 45%.
The three knights landed behind Shaltar with heavy thumps. For once, Shaltar didn’t immediately charge after me. She approached slowly, while her health bar burned, now down to 59%. Each tick of damage did precisely 3,146,592 damage, taking a little below 1% of her health.
Shaltar didn’t seem all that bothered about the burn. The game didn’t recognize [Torment] as a heavy impact spell. It only did 1% of her damage, after all.
Veyra: “Just keep kiting, it’s working!”
Even better, Shaltar cackled at me instead of attacking. “Have you had fun in my empire? You’ve turned all the castles against me, haven’t you? It won’t matter. All the armies in the world will never defeat me. Every sovereign in the world can unite; they’ll all fall to the power of spirits!”
“Uh,” I said. “It’s just me and Veyra. No sovereigns.”
“A little girl and a little boy,” Shaltar said, while her health bar approached the halfway mark. “Look down these walls. This city is made of spirits. I have gathered them all. Without them, you will never have the power to—”
Her health bar hit 50%, and her words got cut off. A pained grimace appeared on her face. Her demeanor switched entirely. “Vermin! All of you! Vermin!”
Shit. A second phase.
She growled in pain, and some fucked up transformation began taking place. She leaned back uncontrollably, her limbs twitching, and her sickles fell to the ground. More dark spirits spun around her body, increasing in speed. A purple aura burned from her shoulders, like that of an aura master. Her fingers spread wide, and her sickles were replaced with claws. The look in her eyes was pure madness.
“I will slaughter you all!” she growled before bursting into a dash fast enough that she disappeared from my vision.
I panic [Shadow Dashed] the moment I lost track of her, and good thing I did. The air rippled from the power of the attack that launched from Shaltar’s claws.
Giant claw marks were left behind on the stone, spanning the width of the battlements and reaching over thirty feet. The cuts burned with the spirits’ purple power. Shaltar’s figure loomed behind. She dashed for me again.
Nope, I’m not dodging that! I thought, and I took my only remaining escape route by jumping off of the battlements. Pieces of stone fell below me as the castle walls began collapsing from the abuse.
I glanced behind me to see Shaltar diving after me with her knights closely behind. I couldn’t even kick myself from the wall for speed.
Shaltar was about to cut me cleanly in half when free-handed ice magic spawned below me, forming a ramp. I slid onto it and was launched into the city.
With some luck, I landed straight onto a rooftop. My lungs were about to kill me as I finally had a few seconds to catch my breath.
Shaltar didn’t have wings, but her jump came with explosive force. She slashed at the building.
The tenement before me was cut in half, crumbling under the blue glow of the Shaltar’s claw-marks. Istvan dove at me from above, and I was forced to dash to the next rooftop, another building crushing down as Istvan and his spear pierced right through.
I jumped down to the streets and ran while the bosses continued to burn.
