Assassinate Wonderwind [Book 1 Completed!]
B2 Chapter 18 - Queen Of Aetherdale Part Two“We’re getting fired if she dies!” Song Joon bellowed. “They need to stop now!”
Ji-soo anxiously watched the projection of Aetherdale’s streets from her computer in the office. Tenements were cut into slices, crashing down violently while Shaltar’s health bar dwindled. Assassin A ran at what seemed like the pace of an Olympic sprinter, dashing to rooftops and occasionally dipping into portals to just barely avoid death.
“They’re barely even hitting the Shaltar!” Joon shouted loud enough for everyone in the building to notice the commotion. “The robe is doing three million damage every second!”
“Calm!” Ji-soo called, while tapping her finger on her desk, trying not to bite a wound inside her mouth. “It’s too late to intervene now.”
“Heal the boss, nerf the robe, anything!” Joon continued. “This is the one boss that can’t die! She absolutely can’t! The whole expansion will be out of order. What’ll your excuse be when Hyunwoo returns!?”
His words were demanding. With Hyunwoo absent, Ji-soo had the final say in any last second balance changes or interruptions to boss’ health bars in case of disastrous miscalculations.
Shaltar was designed to be fought with full armies of NPCs supporting the top guilds. Those armies could be obtained from smaller, lower level castles in the vicinity. The smaller castles were considerably easier, and thus, they would likely get conquered first.
Shaltar was absolutely not designed to get killed so early, let alone by two players with one fancy robe. Her claw-attack was powerful enough to rip through entire front lines. Defeating her required the best tanks and healers in the game to withstand the barrage of attacks Shaltar and her knights had. Even then, players simply didn’t have the stats to deal with a level five hundred boss.
That was why so many NPCs hated Shaltar and were eager to fight against her tyranny. Shaltar was designed to get killed only after a guild managed to gather an army of NPCs to fight back against the boss.
“Assassin is not getting hit!” Joon cried. “Shaltar is at fifteen percent health! We have less than twenty seconds! They’ll kill her with level one Conflagration!” He frowned at her. A panicked expression. “I’m serious; we’re getting fired!”
“Would Hyunwoo have interrupted this?” Ji-soo asked.
Joon paused.
“He wouldn’t have,” Min Lee said from her chair behind Ji-soo. “He would have pulled his hair out, but he would have let it happen.”
Ji-soo nodded. “Interrupting this now would go against the heart of Wonderwind. Assassin and Veyra figured out a clever strategy. If they succeed with it, there’s nothing we can do.”
That said, please just get hit, Assassin A, she pleaded. He hadn’t landed a single hit. Without the Torment effect, the two would have never stood a chance against Shaltar.
If anyone is getting fired, it’s whoever designed that damned robe!
Ji-soo watched as Assassin A kept dodging Shaltar’s dash by hopping to the side. He wasn’t just aimlessly running; he actually baited the bosses into throwing attacks he knew he could dodge.
Hound swung at the rooftop below A, crushing it to pieces. Assassin jumped over the attack, and Ji-soo nearly choked on her spit when he dove into an open window. Shaltar slashed the building into pieces with her claws, but by that time, Assassin had already jumped through the next window.
And he saved his dash, Ji-soo thought, her heart sinking further. Only two assassin players made [Shadow Dash] look like an overpowered ability. The spell was powerful, yes, but after it was used, the cooldown made assassins the most vulnerable class for the next five seconds, giving others a free opportunity to kill them. In a fight as fast paced as this, five seconds gave Shaltar multiple opportunities to hit Assassin A.
But he just kept slipping away. Just when he was cornered, he received a dash or a portal, escaping like it was nothing, or he dodged all of Shaltar’s attacks at point blank range.
Ji-soo leaned her chin on her hands, trying to appear calm. How would she ever explain this disaster to her boss? She didn’t even want to think of the mythic items that Assassin and Veyra would obtain.
“It’s over,” Ji-soo said. “They’ve cheesed the final boss.”

I had no idea how I was still alive.
Shaltar’s whole city was just flashes of destroyed buildings and attack patterns I could barely see. Hound and Istvan were behind Shaltar while she attacked me. I had no idea where Titan was, and I couldn’t spare a moment to figure out.
Shaltar slashed rapidly with her claws, which were just barely dodgeable. There was a trick to her pattern. If I stayed close enough, she tended to use rapid slashes instead of her large killing blows—the building crushing attacks—which were harder to dodge. Dueling with her at point blank range was slightly easier.
The boss seemed to have a patience bar, though. If I stayed in melee combat for long enough, she wound up a heavy attack anyway.
That wind-up took almost a full second, giving me a trick to dodge it as well. Instead of running or diving to the side, I walked closer, straight to point blank range, where I then side-stepped at the last moment. She swiped, and the claws shot a ranged attack, cutting market stalls and crushing a well in the middle of the street.
Monsters in Wonderwind were faster than any humans could ever be, sure, which was why most players relied on armor and system blocking. In most cases, though, monsters were exactly like Shaltar: exploitable. With the right strategy, I could prompt her to choose the attacks that were most easily dodged.
From the side of my eye, I saw Istvan loading some bullshit attack, causing me to lose focus dueling Shaltar. She loaded a heavy attack when I wasn’t ready.
Shit, I thought, and dashed to an alley to the left, continuing to run instead just as the pavement of the street before me blew to pieces from an explosive cut.
I ran and turned a corner, then threw on the brakes when Titan’s ten-foot stance blocked my path.
With no time to even swear in surprise, I dove left, out of his uppercut, casting an [Afterimage] on the other side. Titan dual-wielded swords, and he swung with the other while I was still mid-roll.
By sheer luck, he picked my [Afterimage], cutting it to dust. God bless my monster avoidance stat.
I wheezed an exhausted breath and pounced onto my feet, hoping to continue running. My steps had already been heavy to the point that adrenaline struggled to push me forward.
My left foot genuinely could not push me any further. Shaltar was already dashing after me. I needed a portal!
Instead of a portal, [Conflagration] blew up beside me. I gritted my teeth, desperately managing to stumble back away from Titan’s next sword swipe.
His health bar was at 1%. Shaltar’s was at 2%.
And my stamina was utterly depleted. Titan attacked me again, and I had no way to dodge. I stumbled backward.

Shaltar’s claws came next. The levelups recovered my stamina a tiny bit. I could have maybe dodged, if I wasn’t completely disoriented. I fell on my back, dodging one final claw from Shaltar.

The streets fell silent. I sat with my hands behind me, stomach moving up and down from heavy breathing. The exhaustion slowly calmed from all the level ups. I took a peek at my character sheet, and a disbelieving snort escaped.
Level 308. I was over level three fucking hundred.
One of the windows on the street opened, from a building that hadn’t yet been destroyed. An NPC woman peeked out. She stared at Shaltar's corpse, blinking.
Then she erupted to a cheer. “The Queen is dead!”
More cheers came from alleys around me. The phrase was repeated. “The Queen is dead!”
Thankfully, the first person to approach me, appearing through a portal, was Veyra. Her level had grown to 314. I admired the number, still catching my breath on the ground.
Neither of us said anything. The system threw us with so much information we could hardly process anything.
I chuffed a disbelieving chuckle. “What the fuck?”
She could only grin. “Nice work.”
I laughed like an idiot as we opened up our systems to see the insane list of items we’d just received.
