Chapter 149: Chapter 147

"Do you hear someone screaming?"

I glanced at Gawain while we walked deeper into the forest.

"No."

His answer came a little too quickly.

I narrowed my eyes. "You didn’t even listen."

"I did."

"Then why did you answer immediately?"

"Experience."

That somehow made less sense.

Eventually, I shrugged and continued walking.

If someone was screaming in the forest, that was their problem.

Not mine.

The deeper we went, the thicker the fog became.

What started as a light mist slowly turned into a white wall that swallowed the trees around us.

Even the sounds of the forest became quieter. Birds, insects, and the distant explosions from students fighting.

Everything sounded muffled.

"Gawain?"

No answer.

I looked to my left.

Empty.

Then to my right.

Empty.

I scratched my head. "Did we get lost?"

Honestly, it wasn’t impossible.

Usually, the rival classes did all the hard work of finding and dragging me into their territories.

This was the first time I was voluntarily traveling to another class. Specifically because Porita Class still hadn’t shown up to capture me.

At this point I was starting to feel offended.

’Was I losing my popularity as a hostage?’

I continued walking through the fog when I suddenly felt a chill run down my spine.

Brrrrrr

I immediately turned around.

Nothing.

Just fog.

Lots and lots of fog.

"...Probably my imagination."

I continued walking but a few seconds later, something brushed against the top of my head.

I swatted it away.

Maybe it’s a branch, a vine or a—

It touched me again.

I frowned then brushed it away once more.

A few seconds later it returned and this time it slid across my forehead.

"What the..."

I grabbed it and finally noticed that it was a long black hair.

Hair that definitely wasn’t mine.

The strands dangled in front of my eyes and for a moment my brain stopped working before restarting again.

"Seriously, Gawain, did your hair get lo—"

I froze.

Oh.

Right.

Gawain wasn’t here... Then whose hair was this?

I absolutely refused to look up because if I do that and saw some horrifying ghost hanging upside down from a tree, I was going to personally die.

Unfortunately my body had another problem.

My legs refused to move when I heard heavy breathing directly behind me.

I could practically feel it against the back of my neck.

I quickly tried moving my legs as hard as I could while mentally motivating it.

Move!

Move you damn legs!

You’re also going to die with me you damn legs!

My soul immediately tried to evacuate when a voice whispered right beside my ear.

"Are you lost, baby gir—"

I spun around so fast I nearly broke my spine, my fist connected with something.

CRACK!

I didn’t wait to identify the target, explanations, or apologies, I just ran at maximum speed while screaming.

"AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!"

The mysterious figure screamed too, possibly because I had punched them in the face.

Branches slapped my face and roots tried to trip me but I ignored all of them, looking for an exit.

"GAWAIN!"

No answer.

"GAWAIN WHERE ARE YOU?!"

Still nothing.

"GAWAIN I’M BEING HAUNTED!"

Somewhere behind me, a male voice yelled in pain.

"WHY DID YOU PUNCH ME?!"

"..."

"..."

"..."

I immediately stopped and turned around to see standing in the fog while holding his nose was a very familiar student from Porita Class.

Long black hair, tall frame, and that annoying smile.

Or at least what would have been an annoying smile if I hadn’t just rearranged it with my fist.

Fredrinn Lance.

My personal nightmare.

An admirer who absolutely refused to understand the meaning of the word no.

For months, he had been appearing whenever Gawain wasn’t around and he would somehow find me, corner me, and start listing all the benefits of dating him as if he were presenting a business proposal.

Every.

Single.

Time.

And every single time, I either escaped or waited for Gawain to arrive and shoo him away.

Fredrinn pointed at me accusingly. "You broke my flirting!"

I stared at him. "...You deserved it."

"You punched me before I even finished my sentence!"

"You crawled out of the fog like a horror movie villain!"

"I was trying to make an entrance!"

"You almost gave me a heart attack!"

"I said baby girl!"

"THAT MADE IT WORSE!"

The boy clutched his chest dramatically. "My feelings are wounded."

"Your face is wounded."

"My face will heal."

"My trauma won’t."

Fredrinn looked past my shoulder, his expression suddenly changed and became serious.

"Don’t move."

I froze.

"Don’t look behind you."

"What?"

Fredrinn stepped forward.

"What is it?"

He didn’t answer. Instead, he slowly moved in front of me until he was standing dangerously close.

Our faces were only inches apart.

I immediately squinted suspiciously. "What are you doing?"

Still no answer.

He just kept staring past me and the serious expression on his face was convincing enough that I could feel the hairs on my neck standing up.

I swallowed. "...Fredrinn."

Nothing.

"...Fredrinn?"

His eyes narrowed. "Wow."

"What wow?!"

"You have really long eyelashes."

"..."

"..."

"..."

I stared at him but Fredrinn only let out a smile.

A very punchable smile.

"There wasn’t anything behind me, was there?"

"No."

My eye twitched. "You liar."

"I needed an excuse to get closer."

I slowly raised my fist as Fredrinn immediately took three steps back.

"Violence isn’t the answer!"

"It is today."

"You’re proving why we’re compatible!"

"HOW DOES THAT EVEN MAKE SENSE?!"

Before I could chase him, Fredrinn suddenly dropped to his knees.

The movement was so abrupt that I almost punched him again out of reflex.

"I know the way!"

I frowned. "What?"

He immediately pointed deeper into the fog. "You’re going to my class, right?"

I narrowed my eyes suspiciously. "How did you know?"

Fredrinn looked offended. "Because no other class is stupid enough to willingly walk into Porita Territory."

"...Fair."

"Also, you’ve already visited almost every other class."

I folded my arms. "Then why hasn’t your class captured me yet?"

Fredrinn casually shrugged. "...Blame it on the fog."

I looked around.

The forest looked like someone had dumped an entire ocean of clouds into it.

"So?"

"So nobody can find anything."

"What do you mean nobody can find anything?"

Fredrinn pointed randomly. "Yesterday someone went to collect water."

"Okay."

"We found him this morning."

"..."

"..."

"...Where?"

"He was sitting in our supply tent."

I stared at him. "How?"

"He was trying to find the river."

I opened my like a gold fish gasping for air. "How does someone accidentally find a tent instead of a river?"

Fredrinn laughed.

"Oh, that’s nothing."

He pointed deeper into the fog.

"One guy tried to scout enemy territory."

"What happened?"

"He discovered our bathroom."

"..."

"He didn’t realize it for three hours."

"..."

Fredrinn sighed dramatically. "This fog is cursed."

I slowly processed everything. "Don’t tell me the reason why you haven’t captured me yet is because you don’t know the way either."

Fredrinn looked personally offended.

"Excuse me?"

He stood up immediately.

"I have excellent mental map awareness."

"That’s not a yes."

"I know exactly where I am."

"That’s still not a yes."

"The rest of the class is the problem."

We stared at each other for a long while before rubbing my head.

"...You got lost too, didn’t you?"

Fredrinn looked away. "A little."

"How little?"

"A lot."

I covered my face. "Oh my heavens."

"It wasn’t my fault!"

"YOU LIVE HERE!"

"I DON’T LIVE HERE!"

"IT’S YOUR TERRITORY!"

"The territory moved!"

I got confused. "Did you inhale.... something?"

"The territory..."

Fredrinn pointed dramatically at the fog.

"Moved."

"No it didn’t."

"It absolutely did."

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

I raised my fist before he could another yes. "So how did your class survive this long?"

Fredrinn crossed his arms proudly. "We stopped trying."

"What?"

"We gave up."

"...What?"

"We figured if nobody can find us, nobody can capture our flag."

The longer I stared, the more horrifyingly reasonable it sounded.

"So your entire strategy..."

Fredrinn nodded proudly.

"Is getting lost."

"Yes."

"And?"

"And hoping everyone else gets lost first."

Fredrinn nodded proudly.

"As you can see, it’s a flawless strategy."

At this point, I no longer had the energy to argue. "You know what? Just lead me to your camp."

I sighed heavily.

"I officially give up trying to understand whatever is happening inside your head."

Fredrinn immediately brightened. "Of course, My Lady."

"Don’t call me that," I glared at him as I started walking.

I only took three steps when Fredrinn grabbed my hand.

I immediately raised my fist.

The reaction was so automatic that even I was impressed.

’Why do people keep trying to hold me?! Was there some kind of club I didn’t know about?’

Fredrinn noticed the fist hovering inches from his face as he immediately closed his eyes.

To my confusion, he placed his free hand over his chest.

"...What are you doing?"

Instead of answering, he whispered something under his breath and it sounded suspiciously like a prayer.

When he opened his eyes again, there was determination in them.

"We should hold hands."

My fist rose higher. "No."

"We’ll get separated."

"No."

"The fog is dangerous."

"No."

"People disappear in here."

"No."

"I disappeared three times yesterday."

I paused. "...How?"

"I got lost from myself."

"..."

"..."

"...That sentence doesn’t even make sense."

"It didn’t make sense when it happened either."

"..."

I could practically hear my patience evaporating.

Fredrinn, however, remained determined. "If we don’t hold hands, one of us will vanish."

I stared at him for a long moment before finally letting out a defeated sigh.

"Fine."

I slowly lowered my fist.

Fredrinn’s face lit up so brightly I was genuinely concerned for my eyesight, his goofy smile stretching from ear to ear. "Does that mean I’m your boyfriend now?"

My fist immediately rose again. "Do you want to die?"

He placed a hand over his heart. "As long as I get to die by your hands."

"..."

"..."

"..."

I let out the most exhausted sigh of my entire life.

Just give me anyone.

Anything.

A monster.

A serial killer.

A demon.

A dragon.

Another combat exam.

Literally anything except this psychopath.
