Beyond Reality : the beginning of the end : Ethan path
Chapter 12 - The First SummoningEthan remained standing in the middle of the warehouse, the book open in his hands.
Several minutes passed.
Then he closed it.
“I don’t understand any of this.”
Trevor was standing calmly in front of him.
“Open it again.”
“I did.”
“Then read it.”
“I already read it.”
Trevor sighed.
“What did you understand?”
Ethan looked at him.
“Nothing.”
Trevor reached into his bag and tossed him a small bottle.
Ethan barely caught it.
“What’s this?”
“Ink.”
Ethan looked at the bottle.
“Ink?”
“For drawing magic circles and inscriptions.”
Ethan turned the bottle around in his hands.
“Why didn’t you tell me that from the beginning?”
“I just told you!”
Ethan stared at the bottle suspiciously.
This story originates from NovelPhoenix. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.
There was, in fact, a small label covered in writing.
He began reading.
“Alchemy ink used for drawing magical circles and engraving seals...”
He raised his eyes.
“Alchemy?”
Ethan continued.
“Ingredients: Kraken droppings...”
He stopped.
He looked at Trevor.
Then continued.
“...a leaf from the Tree of Eden... the feather of a winged shapeshifter... ogre milk...”
Trevor raised an eyebrow.
“Don’t say ‘ogre milk’ in front of an actual ogre.”
“Why?”
“They might crush you.”
“But it says right here—”
“I know.”
Trevor pointed at the label.
“Those are symbolic names for the ingredients. They aren’t necessarily sold under those exact names in stores.”
Ethan stared at the bottle.
“I wish you had told me that before I started reading the ingredients.”
Trevor pointed toward the book.
“You still have a lot to learn.”
Ethan opened the book again.
This time, the page had changed.
New symbols appeared.
He ran his finger across them.
An image of a magical circle appeared, followed by a short set of instructions.
The first thing that caught his attention was:
SUMMONING A FAMILIAR.
Ethan read it quietly.
“A familiar...”
He looked at Trevor.
“What kind of creature?”
“That depends on the summoner.”
“How?”
“The creature will somehow reflect its summoner’s nature. Its personality and behavior may resemble its master’s, but it won’t necessarily be an exact copy.”
Ethan looked back at the book.
Then at the bottle.
“There’s a problem. I don’t have a brush.”
Trevor shrugged.
“Easy. Use your finger.”
Ethan looked at his finger.
Then at the ink.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want to put this stuff on my hand.”
“You’ll need it if you want to use magic.”
Ethan hesitated.
Then sighed.
He dipped his finger into the ink.
“If I get poisoned by this stuff, I’m killing you.”
“I’ve survived worse.”
Ethan crouched down and began drawing.
A line.
Then a circle.
Then several small symbols around it.
He carefully copied the diagram from the book.
As soon as he finished, a new sentence appeared on the page.
Ethan read it aloud.
“Shalk... Shuluk... Sakh... Fakh...”
Silence.
He looked at Trevor.
“What does that mean?”
Trevor stared at the circle.
He knew exactly what the words meant.
*O milk of the ogre, illuminate my path, and so that I do not lose my way, bring me my companion.*
But he said nothing.
Ethan looked back at the book.
Then spoke the words clearly.
“Shalk... Shuluk... Sakh... Fakh.”
The circle began to glow.
A powerful white light rose from the ground.
Ethan took a step back.
Trevor remained where he was, struggling with all his strength not to laugh.
The light grew brighter.
Then a massive magical aura erupted from the circle.
A small shadow appeared within it.
A few seconds later...
The light disappeared.
A young girl was standing in the middle of the circle.
But she wasn't human.
She had small horns, a tail, and unmistakable features of a dragonkin.
She raised her head.
Then looked directly at Ethan.
“How dare you summon me, you damned black elf?”
Ethan froze.
He looked at himself.
Then at the girl.
Then at Trevor.
Trevor had covered his mouth with one hand.
His shoulders were shaking.
Then he burst out laughing.
He laughed so hard that he stumbled over something and fell to the ground.
Ethan stared at him with a completely expressionless face.
“What’s so funny?”
Trevor couldn't answer.
He simply pointed at Ethan.
Then at the girl.
Then burst into laughter again.
The girl put her hands on her hips.
“I am not honored to be your companion!”
Ethan looked at her.
Then at Trevor, who still couldn't stop laughing.
And Ethan realized one thing.
Maybe choosing this book had been the worst decision he had ever made.
Or perhaps it was the best.
He didn't know yet.
But one thing was certain.
His first attempt at using magic had gone nothing like he expected.
