Ethan stared at the girl while Trevor tried to regain his composure after his fit of laughter.

The girl asked irritably, "Why do you keep laughing?!"

Trevor didn't answer.

Ethan, meanwhile, felt that he needed to end the situation before it got any worse.

He took the black card from his pocket.

He looked at it for a moment.

Then he threw it onto the ground.

The effect it had been imposing on him disappeared.

His appearance changed in front of the girl.

He no longer looked like a Dark Elf.

It was obvious now that he was human.

The girl took a step back.

"You're... human?"

"Yes."

She was silent for a moment.

Then she said seriously, "That's worse."

"What?"

"I preferred you when I thought you were a Dark Elf."

Ethan sighed.

"Thanks for the opinion."

The girl turned toward Trevor.

She looked him up and down.

"And you too!"

Trevor raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

"Why are you laughing, scale-head?"

Ethan stopped.

He looked at Trevor.

"Wait."

He examined Trevor's appearance.

Trevor didn't look the way Ethan had always seen him.

Ethan suddenly understood.

"Your card changes your appearance too?"

Trevor smiled.

"Something like that."

Then he looked at the girl and said calmly,

"I'm human too."

The girl froze.

Then she screamed,

"HUMANS?!"

She quickly backed away.

"No! Don't come near me!"

She tried to run.

But a transparent chain suddenly appeared between her and Ethan, stopping her.

"Let me go!"

Ethan stepped toward her.

"Calm down."

She was trembling.

"Don't come any closer!"

"I said calm down!"

The moment the words left his mouth, her body froze.

She stopped moving completely.

Ethan stared at her.

"What?"

She tried to speak, but no words came out.

Then she grabbed her throat and began struggling to breathe.

Ethan's eyes widened.

"What's happening to you?!"

Trevor spoke from behind him, his tone disturbingly calm.

"You ordered her to stop."

Ethan turned toward him.

"What?"

"A companion obeys the commands of its master."

Ethan looked back at the girl.

This wasn't ordinary obedience.

Every muscle in her body had stopped the moment he gave the command.

Ethan quickly said,

"Then stop doing that!"

She didn't move.

Trevor said,

"You didn't order her to breathe."

"What?"

"You ordered her to stop."

Ethan finally understood.

"So..."

He looked at the girl.

Her eyes were filled with fear.

"I did this?"

Trevor nodded.

"Without realizing it."

Ethan began to panic.

He stepped toward her.

"Breathe."

Nothing happened.

"No, no... breathe!"

Her breathing slowly returned.

But she remained frightened and confused.

Then tears began to roll down her cheeks before she suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness.

Ethan stepped back.

He hadn't meant to hurt her.

He had never expected a simple command to turn into something so dangerous.

He spoke quietly.

"I didn't mean to do that."

She didn't answer.

Trevor said,

"That's why you need to learn how to use the contract."

He then explained that a companion could not simply ignore its master's commands, and that the words Ethan spoke could become commands if the contract interpreted them that way.

Ethan looked at the transparent chain.

For the first time, he didn't see it as a power.

He saw it as a responsibility.

Ethan asked,

"What do I do with her now?"

"Take her home."

"My home?"

"Until you figure out what to do with her."

Trevor paused.

Then he added,

"Try to make her trust you."

"And after that?"

"When things between you two settle down, she'll be able to return home."

Ethan looked at the chain.

"Can I summon her again?"

"Yes."

Trevor then explained that the bond allowed the two of them to sense each other. As their connection developed, it could become deeper, allowing each of them to perceive the other's emotions and even sense some of what the other saw and heard.

Ethan looked at the unconscious girl.

"This is a lot for someone who didn't even know this world existed a few days ago."

Trevor smiled.

"You'll get used to it."

He then opened his watch.

"I'm leaving you with her."

"Wait."

Trevor looked at him.

"Why me specifically?"

Silence.

Trevor didn't answer.

He simply smiled.

Then time stopped for a moment.

When everything returned to normal...

Trevor was gone.

***

Ethan returned home.

He carefully placed the girl on his bed.

She was still unconscious.

He stood beside the bed for a few moments, unsure of what to do.

He looked at the clock.

Then at the girl.

Then at his coat.

He was supposed to go to work.

But he looked at her again.

He sighed.

"Fine... I'm not going today."

He sat down on the chair beside the bed.

And began trying to take care of her.

He didn't know her name yet.

He didn't know why his book had chosen her.

He didn't know what it truly meant for her to be his companion.

But one thing was clear:

Ever since Ethan had entered that hotel, he could no longer return to his old life so easily.

And now...

He had a companion.
