Chapter 306: A Mother’s Love

Xiaoyuan is not some ignorant child, rather he grew up even more sensitive to the emotions around him due to the environment that he lived in. It’s not because he wasn’t loved, on the contrary, he thinks that his life is doing well because his grandmother is always with him.

Xiaoyuan never bothers with what he lacks because he cherishes the only family he has. However as a child, it is still inevitable to feel aggrieved especially if the people around him keep on whispering things— saying he doesn’t have a parent and was left behind.

Sometimes he couldn’t even understand why people would think that he’s very pitiful? He has a family! He doesn’t need anyone!

What he felt to those two people who left him was rather more anger than longing. Not for making him pitiful in the eyes of others but because of his grandmother.

When he was still little, his grandmother always told him about her son— his father. She always talked about how great he was. He was although a bit mischievous but very filial to her so she felt very assured and trust him so much. She shared his childhood memories and how he gradually became a teen until adult. More than her stories, he remembered the nostalgia and sadness on her face even more.

It was more like she misses him more than how she always grumbles about how angry she was. He always found her just staring at their photos together with a crying face. He could feel that she wanted his presence and visit in this house.

Unfortunately, it’s already too late.

He didn’t come home even until the last moment of her life.

How could he not feel anger and disappointment towards this man? He would never accept him!

"G-Grandma keep on waiting for you! She wanted to see you again and again but you didn’t come! Why only now?! What’s your purpose?!" Xiaoyuan shouted with fury.

"I-I..." Liu Zhang’s face went extremely pale. "I-I want to make it up to you—"

"Then what about my grandma?! You keep on saying things about me, what about my grandma? Do you not care about her?!" Xiaoyuan could not appreciate his intentions at all. He grew up without a father and the only thing that his presence brought to his life was not good. He thinks that it doesn’t matter if he came into his life or not because what he cares about is what her grandmother’s feelings are.

But it’s already too late.

"I don’t care about you! Why did you only come here today?! You didn’t care about me and my grandma!"

Liu Zhang trembles at his son’s harsh remarks. "S-Son, it’s not true. Please listen to me—"

"Tch! I’d be happy if you come here after I die too so I won’t meet you! I hate you so much!" The child didn’t wait for him anymore and ran back inside the house. Liu Zhang was left kneeling— frozen as he couldn’t find himself back on track after hearing his son’s words.

His own son had no expectations of him even from the start not because he didn’t fulfill his role as a father but due to his absence as a son of his mother. Now that he wanted to take care of his own son but the latter despised him, isn’t this quite ironic? Because he himself wasn’t a good son either.

... And his mother, Liu Zhang knows that his mother no longer holds any expectation for him.

He failed as a son and came too late.

Without his notice, he didn’t know that his ’mother’ witnessed what just happened. She stayed on the side and listened to everything and all she could feel was an immense heartache for her grandson.

Such a good child had no choice but to be exposed to negative feelings at such a young age due to his own parents and her. She didn’t even notice that her grandson knew all her heartbreaks all along and secretly harbored resentment to his own parents since then. But who can be blamed but him anyway?

She glares at Liu Zhang and only feels even more angry at him.

"It’s all your fault that my Xiaoyuan is angry! Hmph! If you stay this way and he won’t accept you as his guardian, I will never forgive you!" She furiously pointed at him.

She turned towards No. 444. "Child, didn’t you say you can give him a nightmare? Do it!"

No. 444 tries to ignore how she called him. "What kind of nightmare do you want?" He doesn’t mind a small movement towards that man. Even he himself felt dumbfounded at how that man ignored his family. He is not ignorant to human customs and he knew that they value relationships the most especially blood ties related. He had seen many souls who often have lingering feelings yet behind that came from their own family, so after learning what happened, he also couldn’t understand that man.

Why did he do that to his own family anyway?

That child was right. Why now? Because his mother is dead?

Liu Hua took a deep exhale. "My poor Xiaoyuan, such a good child yet he harbored these emotions at this age. I failed to protect him well." The old woman suddenly felt helpless. After her anger was gone, she felt very exhausted and frustrated at the situation.

Si frown. "Why do you think it’s your fault? It was never yours. It was your son’s responsibility as a father and as a son yet he failed to do it right, so this is his fault." He was very direct at expressing his own opinion. "It’s also no use blaming yourself anyway. You’re dead."

"!!!" No. 22 who was delighted after hearing his initial sentences but heard the last words was speechless. Why did he add those words? Does he really have to point that fact to the old woman?!

Unexpectedly, the old woman wasn’t offended at his straightforwardness. She was only stunned for a second before laughing, the frown between her brows disappeared.

"Haha, you are right! There is really no point in blaming myself. Alright, come with me. Didn’t you say that you’ll give him a nightmare?"

No. 444 nodded and they started walking slowly towards the house. "What kind do you want? I can torture him for whatever you want."

The old woman chuckles. "Really? I look forward to that, Child."

"... Can you stop calling me a child? I am older than you."

"Ayoo! You look very young! Haha! I bet you young man has many ladies coming towards you, right?"

"I don’t want to answer that question."

The old woman laughed even more. "Ayooo, don’t be embarrassed, Child!"

"...."

No. 22 and Yin watched the two bickers and teasing as they walked away. It was very unexpected that someone could actually talk to that legendary grim reaper like that. And it is even more bizarre that No. 444 has been careful with the choice of words that he said.

Ji sighs, a soft smile appears on his lips.

It seems like it’s not that hard for him to have a heart.
