Chapter 309: Trust And Chance

"Here, take this." The old woman guided them towards her room and pointed to the bottom drawer of her cabinet. Curious, Ji went there and found a small jar filled with paper wraps.

"What’s this, Grandma?" he asked curiously and opened the jar after she signalled him. He took one paper wrap and opened it, only to find a small yellow hard candy.

"A candy?" He asked in surprise.

She nodded. "I plan to give this to Xiaoyuan but it’s just too many. Children cannot take too many sweets and he has to take care of his teeth. So you can take a bunch as my thank you for my favors."

He smiled. "Grandma, there’s no need. This is our job. We are here to help you for your unfulfilled regrets and guide you for your next life. There’s no need for gifts."

"Ayoo, just take it!" The old woman was persistent so they looked at each other helplessly and could only follow her.

As powerful figures, they can of course touch anything so they easily slip candies into their pockets. Ji took one and put a candy on his mouth.

He instantly tasted the sweetness of the candy so he smiled again. "It’s very sweet. Thank you, Grandma."

Meanwhile, the great devil and the grim reaper stared at the candies on their palms, both having no plans on taking the candies. They merely put it inside their pockets and leave it as it is.

Fortunately, the old woman didn’t mind and just smiled at them.

"Old woman, why are you not in a hurry?" This was No. 444’s question as he took the seat beside her.

It’s been another day since the confrontation between the father and son and the atmosphere inside the house remain stiff and tense. Xiaoyuan wouldn’t talk to his father no matter how much the latter tries to come close. It looks like he’ll be having a hard time coaxing his child back to his side.

What he couldn’t understand was why it seems like the old woman didn’t care about this situation. She doesn’t seem to mind that the relationship between the two is not fine and just spent her time laying on her favorite rocking chair.

Doesn’t she want the two to have a better relationship so her son could take care of Xiaoyuan? Why doesn’t she look anxious now?

Liu Hua paused for a second after hearing his question before she smiled softly. "As you said, it’s no use for me to stay anxious and frustrated. I’m already dead anyway."

No. 444 tilted his head a bit. "That’s it?"

The old woman looked at the grim reaper on his side and saw the genuine confusion in his eyes. She paused. That look was just kinda similar to her grandson every time he wanted to satisfy his curiosity. There were no other thoughts nor did it harbor any intention but just pure confusion about something.

Her gaze softened unconsciously and she finally answered. "I just believe that my son can take care of him."

But the grim reaper didn’t even understand. "Aren’t you angry at him? Why did you trust him again after abandoning you and Xiaoyuan for a long time?" He heard all her rants and fury earlier so he couldn’t understand how her feelings suddenly flipped.

"It’s because he’s my son."

"... That’s it?" He was really confused. Because he is her son? Was that enough? Are blood-ties really that important enough to forget all the wrong doings he did? Was all her suffering not important? Was all that anger just words?

"I know him well."

"But he changed." He was still unconvinced. "He left for years and he changed so much. You tell me that you believe him just because he was with you and he’s your family but what about him? Wasn’t what he did an evidence of who he is? Otherwise, how could he just leave you...??" He was still very blunt at just saying his thoughts but after No. 22’s constant nagging about that behavior, he restrained himself. It’s just that he did it now unconsciously and it was already too late to withdraw his words.

The old woman stiffened at his words and went silent for a moment. Unexpectedly, this action suddenly felt like a warning sign to him again. It was as if he could see No. 22’s glares at him again and he instantly knew that he really went wrong again.

His body went frozen and before he could process what to do, his mouth already did what to do.

"I’m sorry." No. 444 pause. It was an unexpected response but he thought that it’s also the right thing to do so his voice became firm. "My words may offend you again. I didn’t mean to say it and cross something that I shouldn’t have."

Liu Hua sighed. "I understand what you’re saying." She smiles bitterly. "I also knew that my son truly changed. His life underwent drastic changes that he never experienced here. I may not know every single thing that happened to him far away but I also know that the world is truly vast outside. There are many things that I didn’t know. Of course, it’s still not understandable for him to do that to me and his son. However..." She paused again.

"As a mother, I watched him grow up. I taught him the way I can. No matter how society changes him, I still understand his heart."

When she saw him crying heavily beside her cold body, she somehow saw that son who was always with her. The little young boy who always dove inside her arms like a small bird seeking for his mother’s warmth to feel safe and warm. That sight made her realize that even though her son changes his way of living his life, the son that she knew and loved was always there inside his heart. All the anger that was in her heart magically disappeared like that.

As a mother, her love for him is very unconditional and she wanted to give him a chance to make it up for everything. At least for Xiaoyuan. She believes that there’s still the Liu Zhang that she knew inside him.

She doesn’t want to leave this place full of hatred and uncertainties for the future of her family. She wanted to trust them that they can live and move forward even without her.

"So you gave him a chance?" She just nodded.

"...." No. 444 frown. "Just because he’s your son?"

"Because I know his heart no matter who he is on the surface. I love him."
