Chapter 315: Baobao

The next soul that Si and Yin had to guide is very unusual and unexpected. It was no longer a human but an animal instead, specifically a dog.

Fortunately, Si’s temper changed so he accepted this new task calmly and willingly. They went together to the place and were teleported into an abandoned house.

The house was old and small and everything was almost a mess. There were vines growing all around, the furniture was very dusty and doors, windows and even some walls were broken. It’s clear that there was no one living here.

The two walked around to look for their target and eventually found it under a tree.

They saw the soul of the dog laying under the tree and sleeping. However they didn’t see its corpse but rather just skeleton bones on the side, with its wide chain still near it. It was obvious that it died just being tied here for a long time.

"Why didn’t they send someone here immediately after it died?" Yin asked because in the usual, those who died and became souls, there will be a grim reaper automatically to guide them so they always see the body newly dead.

"It’s because the dog is very stubborn and didn’t want to follow. Others may find this a waste of time or troublesome."

He frowned. "Why won’t it follow?"

Si opened the scroll containing the dog’s information and read it briefly for him. "The dog was named Baobao, 10 years old. It died due to old age and also due to malnutrition, illness and wounds. She was well taken care of by her owner until she was just suddenly left behind. She was tied here and died after 3 months and her soul stayed here for almost 2 years already."

He was speechless. "2 years? I’m sure there had been many grim reapers who were assigned to take her. No one succeeded?" He couldn’t help but ask for the scroll and read the information again.

"Hm," No. 444 acknowledged him.

Now he didn’t know what to say. For two years, no one was able to do it? He couldn’t help but question the efficiency of the services of grim reapers. It turns out that not everyone is like No. 444. He is indeed someone known as legendary for his fast and efficiency in work.

But what could he expect? No matter what area, there will always be slackers around, be it human or someone like them.

Nevertheless, he was curious how Si did this. The latter was not in the past who would just take souls forcefully, how will he convince the dog?

In addition, they can’t talk to it. How will they know its wish and fulfill it like they usually do?

This was also what No. 444 was thinking about. Unlike humans where they can just ask about, this dog can’t. He couldn’t even understand why it was so stubborn to stay here. Wasn’t it abandoned by the owner? Could it be because the dog wasn’t convinced by that reason?

Was the dog unwilling and felt resentment? Yet when he looked at its soul, there was nothing. There was no resentment from its death. The light dark energy around it was just because of the accumulated from the years of its soul staying here surrounding it.

It held no grudge nor any anger to the owner who left.

"There was no resentment even after what happened?" He turned towards the devil who had an unusual reaction to what he’s reading.

"I read more on the information regarding how she died. It states here that after she was left here, some people found her. They robbed the house and she wanted to fight back. However because she was tied here, those robbers took the opportunity to abuse her. They threw rocks, hit her with lashes and made sure to starve her until death."

"...."

There was a stifling silence after his words. The atmosphere somehow turned cold and they could only look at the dog with a complicated expression on their face.

Such suffering, why didn’t it hold resentment?

Is it because it’s an animal that its thoughts are different from humans? No, they heard that animals are more sensitive to emotions and it certainly felt the malicious intent towards that time. Why? Why is it different?

Whatever their thoughts are, the priority is to let the soul follow them thus Si decided to move closer. The dog finally noticed someone’s presence and woke up. Its body instinctively stood up fast and back away in a few steps with an arching body. It was clearly guarded and alarmed yet its gaze was very different.

It held no malice nor any anger that they would possibly hurt her. It was just an automatic reaction after a traumatic experience. Hence after staring at him for a while and probably determining that they’re not the same as those who hurt him, his body calmed down and even sat down.

Its eyes show docile and gentleness with a hint of curiousness in it.

Noticing it made Si feel baffled. He squatted down and spoke. "You’re not really wary of me, why?"

"Arf!" The dog cheerfully barks at him instead.

"No, I don’t understand you," he answered.

"Arf! Arf!" The dog barks even more and runs around him with its tail wagging fast.

This is the first time that he’s been around an animal so he was also curious. These past few weeks of changing his way as a grim reaper, he also observed human beings. He saw them having different animals around as pets. It seems that humans enjoy having them as companions.

He also noticed that many of them are very obedient with their owners although they have different attitudes to approach them. Cats prefer to act cold and silent but they are also very mischievous around humans while dogs are energetic and playful. He had seen this type of dog like Baobao running around all day.

Was it because it’s natural for golden retrievers like her to be this energetic and warm that’s why she didn’t even know how to hold a grudge?

"Say, why are you not leaving here? There’s nothing here to play with. There’s no food nor toys. There’s no one who accompanies you and you’re just alone. I saw many dogs like you around who like to run and play with other animals, why are you different? Is it because you’re old? 10 years is indeed your limit." No. 444 found it unexpectedly to talk freely in front of an animal even if it won’t respond to him directly.

It doesn’t care about whatever words he’ll say nor even can comment on something that he didn’t want to hear, just cheerfully running around as if giving an endless support.

His eyes unconsciously showed tenderness that he didn’t notice. His posture relaxes and as time slowly passes by, he didn’t even notice how he became the chatterbox instead.
