Chapter 325: Brewing Hatred

Ever since that day, Si’s energy has visibly lowered. It was obvious that what happened to him shook his heart. Even his attitude towards the souls also changed. It was no longer enthusiasm but with a cautious not to make any single mistake. Yin continues to accompany him all the time but as he watches the man’s low energy and cautiousness, an indescribable feeling starts to arise inside him. He couldn’t describe it fully but he noticed a slight irritation brewing inside him especially when Si faces souls.

Over time he finally couldn’t stand it anymore. One time when No. 444 was about to teleport to his assigned task again, he grabbed the man’s arm and caught sight of a familiar grim reaper that he quickly calls.

"No. 88!" It was that young junior they met last time. "Take over this soul first." He told her.

The junior was surprised and subconsciously looked at Si. "Senior?"

No. 444 frowned at him. "What are you doing?"

"We have to talk."

"Talk? Then we’ll talk later after my duty."

"No." He insisted. "I want to talk about something important to you."

No. 444 was flabbergasted. "Is it that important?"

He nodded firmly. "Yes."

The latter went silent. Just as he thought that he would agree, Si instead opened the magic scroll about the soul he has to guide and read it thoroughly. After a while he looked at him and gently shook his head.

"I can’t."

Yin was stunned. He refuses him?

"The matter with this new soul is quite hard. I want to deal with it personally." As he said those words, he also took back the arm that he’s holding. Yin was silent for a moment before his face returned calm.

"Alright." He could only nod at the end anyway. They teleported at the location and he also found out about the soul’s information. It was an old man who died from illness. It was relatively light and the old man didn’t have that much resentment in his life. He mainly just wanted to wait for his granddaughter’s examination results for her college entrance exam. Only if he knew that she passed that he could be at ease leaving.

The results would be out for another day so they stayed with the old man for a while in his house, just silently watching his family take care of his body. The old man talked about his life and they could see that he was indeed a good person. That is why Yin wasn’t surprised again that after everything was settled, he didn’t hesitate again to give merit to the old man.

He thought about something and wanted to talk but before he could do it, he saw Si’s expression showing relief. It was as if he realized something and the frown between his brows also disappeared.

"Don’t you have something to say to me?" The man faced him. He opens his mouth but closes it again after a second thought.

"Nothing."

Si was confused. "Nothing? I thought you said it was important."

"... No, it’s not important anymore," he denies. Even though the latter was still in doubt he also didn’t pursue it anymore.

After that, No. 444 magically went back to his usual self. He was no longer in a lower mood and he went back to feel enthusiastic about meeting souls.

Yin was just there silently accompanying him.

He actually wanted to tell something, perhaps telling the man not to overly give his trust to humans. He wanted him to stop always hoping that they would be a better person in the next life and not to give his own merit anymore. But seeing the smile on his face, how could he?

He could see that this grim reaper genuinely wanted to help. He could see that Si wanted to give a chance to everyone. And he has no right to say anything because he was just like them.

Like these souls, he was also given a chance. No. 444 gave his trust to him.

It’s just that as he thought that everything will go back to normal again, a series of small incidents starts to happen.

He didn’t know why but the souls that No. 444 assigned had deeper resentments. The task became more difficult because the souls are not willing anymore. They are victims of different challenges and the wishes that they wanted to fulfill are not easy to grant. Many wanted revenge while others didn’t want to leave and wanted to do everything to see the perpetrators suffer again and again more than what they had.

They had difficulty trying to find ways because they also don’t want to do the same thing as what happened back then when No. 444 let a soul take revenge on humans.

Aside from these, Yin began to feel agitated again. Because of the victims bad experiences, the grim reaper’s heart softens again and the merit that he gave starts to get bigger. He could see that after No. 444 gained a heart, he started to feel deeper empathy to humans.

He didn’t expect the influence from that heart that he started ignoring himself again. Not all souls who suffered are willing to forget and change after what happened to them. Even though they are willing to leave with him, the resentment inside their hearts is no longer something that can be erased simply. Even if they would also forget this life, it seems that what they experienced can’t just disappear like this.

As a result, it was No. 444 who carried all that burden. Because of his selflessness, the symptoms he had flared even more often.

Yin wanted it to stop. How many times does he have to see him carry all the results of the souls betrayals? Those promises to change are simply just a saying and he knew that the latter also understood it.

He knew that it would only end with another betrayal again, but he couldn’t understand why he’s still doing it.

Are humans really that important to him?

He may not understand Si’s feelings but as he watches the man choose to suffer in silence, a trace of brewing hatred starts growing inside his heart.

Why?
