Chapter 17: 17: EXAMINATION DAY

The day of the examination had finally arrived. The Academy’s entrance was packed with students arriving on foot, while others pulled in with expensive cars.

Kael and his gang arrived on their bikes. The three of them pulled up right in front of the Academy gates, taking off their helmets and running their hands through their hair as the morning breeze blew past them. They struck cool poses beside their motorcycles, looking every bit like the stereotypical bad boys they wanted everyone to see.

Kael smiled confidently as he admired the Academy entrance.

Before he even had the chance to continue showing off, a loud horn suddenly blared behind them.

A Mercedes-Benz was speeding toward them, practically forcing them out of the spot. It kept getting closer while repeatedly honking its horn.

Kael and his gang hurriedly dragged their bikes aside, nearly losing their balance in the process.

"Hey! What’s that?"

"What the fuck?!"

They snapped in annoyance as they finally moved out of the way, immediately turning to glare at whoever had shamelessly chased them away from their perfect posing spot.

The driver’s door opened, and Raymond stepped out before respectfully opening the back door.

June gracefully stepped out in his green Academy uniform—one he couldn’t even remember the last time he’d worn.

Smiling brightly, he looked straight at Kael, who already seemed on the verge of exploding.

"Hello. Next time, don’t block the road with those cheap things."

He winked at them before casually walking toward the Academy like some arrogant young master making his grand entrance.

Kael nearly lunged after him before his gang quickly held him back.

The surrounding students watched June stroll through the gates, whispering among themselves as they gossiped behind his back about his usual shameless behavior.

Halfway through the entrance, June suddenly stopped.

He turned toward a group of girls walking behind him, who had been gossiping just loudly enough for him to hear.

He smiled sweetly.

"If you’re going to gossip about me, at least come with a car."

He gave them a playful wink, slid on his sunglasses, and continued walking into the Academy.

The girls were left completely speechless.

---

June guessed he had no choice but to change into the examination uniform, though he personally found it disappointingly plain.

Once everyone had finished changing, all one hundred students gathered in the Academy arena where the examination would be held.

The Espers stood in orderly lines on the right, while the Guides lined up on the left.

As they waited for the examination to begin, June looked down at his uniform.

A black shirt. A black tactical jacket. Black cargo pants.Black combat boots. Black was basically the color of the day.

The Academy’s crest was embroidered over the left side of the jacket, with the student’s identification badge fastened beside it. They also wore fingerless tactical gloves, utility belts, and compact black equipment bags.

The only noticeable difference between the Esper and Guide uniforms was the Academy crest. The Espers wore a red crest while the Guides wore a blue one.

Everyone chatted casually while admiring their uniforms, but June wasn’t paying attention.

Instead, he kept looking around for Nyx, who strangely hadn’t arrived yet.

After a while, Nyx finally appeared and quietly took his place at the back of the line.

June glanced at him before shrugging inwardly.

Maybe it’d be better if he didn’t come... Then we wouldn’t have to go through all the stress of losing.

---

Before long, the Academy authorities arrived and took their places at the front of the arena, standing proudly beneath the Academy flag fluttering behind them.

The Chancellor, a black-haired man wearing glasses and a sharp black suit, stepped forward to welcome everyone with an incredibly long speech.

June had casually learned that his name was Mr. Gregory.

After him came the principal, Mr. Bradford, the silver-haired man who constantly reminded June of his boss.

He delivered yet another lengthy speech, repeating the importance of the examination, the Academy’s prestige, and the bright future awaiting successful students.

Standing nearby were the vice principal—the woman in the same boring suit June had seen before—along with several Deans and other Academy staff members.

June couldn’t be bothered remembering any of their names.

He simply waited for the Academy anthem to end before the actual event finally began.

The Dean of Examinations, a man wearing a stylish black lab coat over his formal attire, stepped onto the stage while everyone else took their seats.

Like the Chancellor, he also wore glasses.

His name was Mr. Ethan.

Unlike what June expected, the Deans weren’t particularly old. Mr. Ethan looked like he was only in his late thirties or perhaps his early forties.

Standing before the students, he began explaining the examination.

Each team would enter a simulated dungeon.

Their objective was to clear the dungeon within the allotted time while collecting the Mana Crystals hidden throughout the area.

Their overall performance, teamwork, efficiency, and completion time would determine their final scores.

Only fifty students would ultimately be admitted into the Academy.

Thirty Espers.

Twenty Guides.

As Mr. Ethan continued explaining the rules, the atmosphere gradually became tense.

There were the usual regulations—no cheating, no interfering with other teams, and no intentionally sabotaging the examination. He also reminded everyone that every team would be monitored throughout the test to ensure no one violated the rules.

June casually yawned through the entire explanation.

He was bored out of his mind.

Honestly, he couldn’t wait to fail so he could finally go home.

He had already booked a trip to Hawaii for a relaxing two-week vacation.

Once Mr. Ethan finished speaking, the examination officially began.

Everyone was instructed to gather with their assigned teammates, and the orderly lines quickly broke apart as students moved toward their partners.

June walked over to Nyx.

"Hey. Why were you late today?"

"I overslept," Nyx answered casually.

"You overslept? The great Nyx?" June shook his head dramatically. "Impossible."

Mr. Ethan then informed everyone that the transportation portals would be opening shortly.

Each portal would lead a specific team to their assigned examination dungeon.

Moments later, glowing blue portals began appearing across the arena.

The students watched them with excitement and amazement.

After receiving the final order to proceed, everyone began entering their assigned portals one after another.

June and Nyx stood before theirs for a moment.

"Are you ready?" Nyx asked.

"I’ve never been more ready in my whole life!" June grinned.

Nyx stared at him silently.

Before he could say another word, June grabbed him by the hand and pulled him straight into the portal.

---

As the students disappeared into their respective portals, the examinations were simultaneously being monitored from a massive observation hall.

The spacious hall accommodated Academy staff, administrators, and invited VIP spectators.

One half of the room was lined with rows of advanced computers, where staff members monitored each student’s progress in real time.

Above the center of the hall floated several enormous holographic screens, displaying live footage from every dungeon so that the distinguished guests could comfortably watch the examination unfold.
