Chapter 18: SOMETHING’S OFF....Chapter 18: 18: SOMETHING’S OFF....
June and Nyx opened their eyes as their vision went fuzzy for a second. They shook their heads, ran a hand through their hair, and looked around.
They had arrived at their destination. Before them stood a long, massive gate that looked as though it belonged to ancient times. Thick stone walls surrounded it, their weathered surfaces looking fragile enough to collapse at any moment.
June shook his head. "Well, that looks scary..." he said as he stared at the towering gate ahead. It was made of rusty gold and dark metal, with strange symbols embedded across its surface. "The budget sure is high..."
Nyx dropped to one knee and opened his backpack, carefully going through his equipment to make sure everything was there.
June looked at him. "What are you doing?"
"Making sure we have all the required equipment. You should check yours too," Nyx insisted.
"Oh, no need for that." June folded his arms.
Nyx looked up at him. "Why?"
"I already checked everything before coming to school," June replied with a smile.
Nyx blinked. "And what exactly do you have?"
"My phone... duh?"
"..."
Nyx was speechless. "And why would you bring that in here...?"
"Phones are the most important things." June nodded confidently as he pulled out his phone to check it. His smile immediately faded. "Wait... why isn’t there any signal?!"
Nyx simply shook his head before checking through his own equipment and standing up. "Aren’t you carrying any weapons at all to fight whatever’s in there?"
"....."
June blinked awkwardly before forcing out a smile. "Well... I do have a bag of chips to fight against hunger..."
"...."
Nyx had completely given up asking. Instead, he simply stretched out his hand toward June.
June paused and stared at the outstretched hand. Smiling warmly, he reached over and shook it.
"What are you doing?"
"Shaking your hand. Isn’t that why you held it out...?"
"No. We have to synchronize our mana. You need to examine me and check our synchronization rate..."
"...."
June blinked.
"Oh."
He adjusted his grip, and the two of them stood there quietly, holding hands. One minute passed. Then two. Then three. Silence lingered between them.
"Are you done?" Nyx finally asked.
June slowly nodded with his eyes still closed. "Your hands sure are soft..."
"...."
Nyx immediately pulled his hand back and glared at him.
"What the hell...?" He stared in complete disbelief. "Don’t tell me you can’t even do that."
June simply shrugged.
"...."
"At least you should know our synchronization compatibility rate?"
"We have that? I didn’t sense anything," June replied, leaving Nyx even more speechless.
Taking a slow breath to keep his composure, Nyx pulled out the map he had memorized during his studies.
"At the very least, we should come up with a strategy before going in."
He spread the map out in front of June and immediately began explaining possible routes, enemy placements, escape paths, and combat formations while carefully studying every detail.
He continued talking, filling the explanation with technical jargon and strategic terms.
June stared at him. Then he stared at the map. Then he stared back at Nyx while the explanation continued.
When Nyx finally finished, he looked up.
"Do you understand any of that?"
".... Understand what...?"
Nyx stopped his jaw from dropping. He blinked several times before silently folding the map back up and clearing his throat.
"Let’s go."
He led the way toward the gate while June casually followed behind him.
The two of them stopped before the enormous entrance.
"How do we open this...?" Nyx muttered as he flipped through his notebook. "It doesn’t look anything like what the books described... or what the instructions showed."
He frowned in confusion, carefully running his fingers across the engraved symbols as if searching for some hidden mechanism.
"If we can’t figure it out, maybe we could just go home," June suggested.
Nyx ignored him and continued tracing the strange carvings, looking for some kind of magical lock.
Several minutes passed.
"I think the door’s broken. Let’s just go back and tell—"
Before June could finish, a loud sound echoed through the area.
Nyx’s fingers had brushed against one of the engraved symbols, and the entire gate instantly lit up with a brilliant yellow glow.
The massive gate began vibrating violently, forcing both of them to stumble several steps backward in surprise.
"What’s happening...? Is it supposed to look like this?" June asked as the gate shook harder and harder, the ground rumbling beneath their feet while loose rocks crashed down around them.
"I... think?" Nyx answered uncertainly as he watched the enormous gate slowly begin to open.
Behind it was a swirling yellow portal.
The portal didn’t even give them time to react.
An overwhelming force erupted from within, instantly pulling both of them off their feet. They were swallowed whole before either of them could resist, and the gate slammed shut behind them.
Everything returned to silence.
---
Back at the academy’s Surveillance Hall, the VVIP guests sat comfortably as they watched dozens of floating monitors displaying students completing their examination tasks. They silently observed every movement, judging performances while staff members monitored each team from rows of computers.
The overall supervisor, Dean Ethan of Examinations, slowly walked through the room, occasionally stopping behind different staff members to observe their screens.
Everything was proceeding normally. The room remained quiet as everyone watched the students while grading their performances in real time.
Then one of the staff members monitoring a team suddenly raised his hand.
"Excuse me..."
Mr. Ethan immediately turned and walked over.
"What’s wrong?"
"I think there’s an issue with this team..." the staff member said, pointing at a monitor that had suddenly become distorted with heavy static.
Mr. Ethan leaned closer and began typing across the keyboard, carefully checking the system to identify the problem.
Several moments later, he finally found the source.
His expression instantly changed.
"Which students are assigned to this team?" he asked. "Pull up their profiles."
"June En and Nyx Faux. F-Class Esper and Guide," the examination staff answered.
The shock on Mr. Ethan’s face deepened.
He rapidly continued typing, trying one command after another, but nothing responded.
Then he suddenly gasped.
"I think... there’s a serious problem."
Everyone nearby stopped what they were doing and looked over.
"What is it?" another staff member asked.
"They’re not inside the simulated dungeon at all..." Mr. Ethan said, his fingers still flying across the keyboard.
The entire room erupted in shocked gasps.
"What do you mean?"
Mr. Ethan slowly swallowed before lifting his eyes to the glitching monitor.
"They’re not in our simulated dungeon..." he said quietly. His face turned pale. "I think... they’re inside a real dungeon."
