Chapter 51: 51: IMPORTANT PREPARATIONS

June found it a little hard to fall asleep that night. He lay on his bed with his hands tucked behind his head, staring blankly at the ceiling.

Since it was the weekend, Sunday, he had returned home instead of staying at the academy.

Before he knew it, thoughts of Nyx’s ridiculous walk and all of his reactions from earlier began replaying in his mind. A smile slowly spread across his face as he shook his head.

"He’s really too silly to be a villain," he murmured with a small laugh. "I mean, what kind of villain does that? He’s way too cute to be one."

He chuckled again, remembering that awkward little walk. "And that walk... who forgets how to walk just because they’re surprised? He’s really something else."

He laughed again as another memory surfaced.

"Is he a baby or something?" he muttered. "His cheeks were so red."

Without even realizing it, June spent the next couple of hours absentmindedly smiling to himself while replaying one memory after another.

By the time he finally snapped back to reality, he immediately sat upright.

June blinked several times before lightly slapping both of his cheeks.

"What the hell was I doing...?" he muttered, staring into space. "I can’t possibly be..."

He quickly shook his head.

"No. No time to sit here glazing over the villain. I should be figuring out a guaranteed way to fail tomorrow’s compatibility test."

Nodding to himself, he reached for his tablet.

"The test is tomorrow. I need a backup plan... something that guarantees nothing goes wrong."

He nodded firmly before muttering, "Sure, he’s cute and all... but he’s still the villain. I can’t let myself get dragged into the novel’s plot. What if he suddenly goes berserk and kills me just like in the original storyline?"

He shuddered.

"Nah. I’m no cat. I don’t have nine lives. I can’t exactly count on waking up in another world again. Next stop might be heaven... or hell. Either way, I’m not taking that risk."

As he spoke, he browsed through several online stores on his phone, searching for something very specific. A pill. A drug. Anything that could temporarily suppress a Guide’s compatibility with Espers.

If he could find something like that, then his compatibility with Nyx would naturally fail during tomorrow’s examination.

"Sorry, Nyx..." he sighed softly. "But it’s for both our sakes. This way we’ll stay far away from the original storyline."

Unfortunately, none of the official online stores sold anything like that. After exhausting every legitimate option, he reluctantly switched to several third-party marketplaces and continued searching.

After nearly an hour, he finally found exactly what he was looking for.

A grin spread across his face.

"Perfect."

June immediately contacted the seller and asked several questions about the product. He confirmed whether it actually worked as advertised, and the seller confidently assured him that it would temporarily reduce a Guide’s compatibility with any Esper to virtually zero for about a day.

That was all June needed.

He carefully checked the seller’s ratings, transaction history, and credentials to make sure they were legitimate.

Verifying sellers in a world filled with Espers wasn’t nearly as straightforward as it had been back on Earth, but after doing everything he reasonably could, he finally completed the purchase.

About an hour later, the package arrived.

June hurried downstairs, collected it, and rushed back to his room before eagerly opening the box. He carefully took out the small pill, examining it from every angle to make sure it matched the product description.

Only then did he smile in satisfaction.

"Perfect..." he said confidently. "Now this damn novel and its stupid author have nothing against me. I’m going to avoid every single death flag."

---

That same night, Nyx was also home.

Unlike most academy students, he didn’t stay in the dormitories. His parents had been strongly against the idea and had used their influence to arrange for him to commute from home instead. It also meant he remained under their constant watch.

Nyx sat quietly at his study desk, his textbook lying open before him.

Normally, he would have been completely absorbed in his studies by now. Instead, his eyes remained fixed on the pages without actually reading a single word.

His thoughts kept drifting back to today. Back to June. Back to the moment June accepted his request.

They were finally partners.

Just thinking about it made a small smile appear on his face. No matter how hard he tried to focus on the words before him, his mind stubbornly wandered back to that single fact.

He was happy.

For a while, he couldn’t even tell why.

Was it because June, the person who might finally hold the key to unlocking his unstable powers, had agreed to become his partner?

Or was it simply because... he would get to spend more time with June?

He wasn’t sure.

After thinking about it for a while, he convinced himself it had to be the first reason. It made the most sense.

As he sat there absentmindedly smiling at the open book, someone quietly entered his room.

Only when the figure stopped beside him did Nyx finally look up.

Mrs. Faux had walked in without him noticing.

She stood beside his desk, silently looking down at the textbook lying open before him. For several long moments, she said nothing.

Eventually, she let out a quiet sigh.

"It’s tomorrow... right?" she asked, looking down at him.

She already knew about the academy’s compatibility examination.

Nyx nodded.

"Mmm."

Silence settled between them again before she spoke once more.

"Did you choose a good partner?" she asked. "A high-ranked Guide?"

Nyx hesitated for the briefest moment before nodding.

"Yes... I did."

Mrs. Faux slowly nodded as she casually flipped through a few pages of the textbook.

"That’s good," she said quietly. "Very good."

She looked back at him.

"Have you been practicing to improve your compatibility with them?"

He nodded again.

"How did it go?"

"...Well."

She gave another slow nod.

"Tomorrow, make sure you get a high score," she said calmly. "A really high compatibility score. One that’ll prove to everyone that you’re not useless... one that’ll finally give us something to be proud of."

Nyx lowered his gaze.

After a brief pause, he slowly nodded.

"I will."

Silence filled the room once again.

Mrs. Faux let out another sigh before turning toward the door.

"Very well."

She was just about to leave when she suddenly stopped. Without turning completely around, she looked back at him over her shoulder.

"And..."

Her voice became noticeably colder.

"Stay away from that F-Rank Guide."

Nyx froze.

"Unless," she continued, "you’re prepared to suffer consequences far worse than the last time."

His fingers twitched slightly at his sides.

After a long moment, he quietly lowered his head.

"...Mmm."
