Chapter 55: 55: NOT THAT GUIDING

Nyx was struggling to keep himself warm, but his efforts were useless. The cold wasn’t the only thing affecting him; something inside his body was beginning to act up.

And he could easily tell that it was his mana.

This was part of the evaluation. The environment they were thrown into contained destabilizing energy specifically designed to interfere with an Esper’s mana.

"Oh..." June nodded.

June could only guess that this was what happened inside.

"Okay then..." June nodded as he grabbed Nyx’s stretched-out hand. "Now what?"

Nyx closed his eyes and held onto June’s hand tightly, almost as if it was his only source of salvation.

One hand rested against his chest while the other remained firmly intertwined with June’s. He tried to calm himself down, but the unstable energy continued to grow stronger, making him feel like he was slowly losing control of his own mind.

Silence surrounded them.

A minute passed, yet the wind continued blowing, carrying snow against their faces while their feet sank deeper into the frozen ground.

June closed his eyes as well and attempted to meditate. At the very least, he needed to put in some effort, even though he was still hoping this entire thing would end with him failing.

Hopefully, his pill was working its magic inside his body.

They remained like that for a while, but nothing happened. Eventually, Nyx slowly opened his eyes and looked at June, who was still sitting there with his eyes closed.

"Are you thinking about chips?"

June immediately opened his eyes. "How did you know?"

He pulled their joined hands closer to his chest. "Can you read my mind now or something? How did you do that? What else did you read?"

"..."

Nyx sighed. "I guessed. Because that’s the only thing you could possibly be thinking about."

June scoffed. "I... I also think about other things. Like... yaoi... and ice cream... and..."

Before he could continue, Nyx grabbed his hand again and pulled him closer.

This time, June’s hand rested against Nyx’s chest. Their distance became dangerously close, and June could clearly hear the steady rhythm of Nyx’s heartbeat.

"What...?"

Nyx looked down at him while holding his hand firmly.

"You have to stare at me and think only about me. That’s the only way it can work."

A few seconds passed, then a minute. Yet nothing happened.

The two of them remained frozen in place, staring into each other’s eyes while their hearts continued beating faster.

Still, there was no reaction.

June blinked. "I think the only thing I can think about right now is how ridiculous we’d look if we turned into snowmen after freezing here."

Nyx pushed him away, causing both of them to stumble back slightly. They stood there for a moment, catching their breath, their cheeks flushed from the close contact.

Nyx could feel his heart racing.

But this time, it wasn’t because he was embarrassed. He could tell his energy was becoming even more unstable.

He placed a hand against his chest before turning toward June.

"What?" June asked.

"Let’s kiss."

June froze.

"Huh?"

"The last time we kissed... it worked. So let’s try again."

June immediately stepped backward. "No. That’s not happening."

Nyx followed him forward. "We should at least try. I won’t force you, but... maybe it’ll work again."

"No." June continued moving backward. "We’re not doing that. Absolutely not. Let’s find another way. Maybe... let’s hug."

He smiled. "That’s much more suitable—"

Before he could finish, a wave of blue light suddenly rushed toward them and swallowed them instantly.

"Ouch!"

Nyx crashed onto the ground, and June fell directly on top of him.

The two of them had returned to the academy, falling straight out of the dungeon entrance.

"Ouch... that hurts." June groaned as he slowly sat up, looking around to confirm where they were.

The sight of the academy brought him an unusual amount of happiness.

For once, he smiled.

"I survived."

He watched as Nyx slowly stood back up. June remained sitting on the floor when the holographic monitor above them began buffering, loading their compatibility percentage.

The voices of the surrounding students immediately died down as everyone stared at the screen.

They were eager to see what result these two F Class individuals would receive.

Nyx also looked up, curious about his fate, while June clasped both hands together, silently hoping that his plan had worked.

All attention shifted toward the holographic display above them.

The screen continued buffering for longer than usual, leaving the audience confused about why the result was taking so long.

Even Mr. Ken checked the system to make sure everything was functioning properly.

However, before he could interfere, the compatibility percentage finally loaded and appeared on the screen.
