Chapter 64: 64: CRUMBLING MOUNTAINS

Nyx’s face was extremely pale, almost as though all the blood had been drained from his body. He looked completely exhausted and drained, his face bruised and covered in cuts from the fight. At this point, he looked almost lifeless.

"No... don’t do this right now. Wake up. Hey." June kept tapping his cheeks gently. "If you don’t wake up, I’ll stop being your partner. We won’t be a pair anymore. I mean it, so wake up..."

Nyx coughed weakly as he struggled to breathe in the freezing air.

"Cold... so cold..."

June immediately leaned closer to hear him.

"Cold?" He looked around helplessly. "There’s no fire around here..."

He turned his attention back to Nyx and frowned.

"Why are you so much colder than everyone else?"

June already knew the answer. Nyx was an F-Rank Esper, so the dungeon’s abnormal effects were probably affecting him far more severely than the others.

"Oh, you silly boy. Why did you even fight when you know you’re weak?" June shook his head worriedly before pulling Nyx closer.

"Let me keep you warm, then."

He wrapped his arms around Nyx and pulled him firmly against his chest, trying to shield his body from the freezing air.

"Feeling better?"

"Cold... so cold... cold..."

Nyx continued mumbling as he wrapped his arms tightly around June. He pulled himself closer, practically sinking into June’s warmth as his body grew increasingly weak.

"We have to get up from here. You have to stand so we can find a way out."

June looked around as the wind howled through the mountains. Snowflakes were swept violently through the air, carried by sharp, whispering gusts that seemed to cut straight through his clothes.

June shivered as the cold suddenly became even more intense.

"We need to leave. You can’t fall asleep here."

His teeth began chattering as the freezing temperature continued dropping. His entire body felt as though it were slowly being turned to ice, making it painfully obvious just how unpredictable this dungeon really was.

Meanwhile, Ryan had managed to drive the remaining monsters away with the camera. As though retreating, the creatures shrank back into their smaller fish-like forms before flying into the sky.

However, something strange happened before they could disappear.

Their bodies suddenly transformed into glowing blue orbs.

"What are those?" Ryan asked, staring upward.

More and more blue orbs appeared in the sky, seemingly materializing from nowhere as they gradually clustered together.

Mr. Ken looked around uneasily.

"The temperature has dropped dramatically. It feels like it has tripled."

Cold mist escaped their mouths with every breath as they stared at the growing collection of blue orbs.

"I don’t have a good feeling about those things," Simon said, shaking his head.

"It’s definitely not a good sign," Mr. Ken agreed.

He suddenly closed his eyes as he sensed a powerful surge of energy rushing through the atmosphere.

"This is bad..."

He opened his eyes again.

"What did you feel?" Ryan asked.

"An enormous amount of energy. It’s extremely powerful," Mr. Ken replied quietly.

The blue orbs suddenly began moving in the same direction.

Everyone watched as they glowed brightly before descending toward a distant snow-covered mountain. As the orbs gathered around the mountain, they began dissolving into blue dust that slowly fell across its surface.

"That’s..." Ryan stared at the mountain in confusion.

Before anyone could understand what was happening, the ground beneath them began shaking violently.

It felt like an earthquake.

Everyone struggled to remain standing as they instinctively grabbed onto one another for support. Cracks began spreading through the snowy ground as the entire area trembled.

Ryan turned toward June and Nyx, who were still in the same position, with June kneeling in the snow and holding Nyx tightly against himself to keep him warm.

"Shouldn’t we get them over here?"

Simon immediately nodded.

"I’ll go get them."

He took a step forward, but a deafening crack suddenly erupted beneath him.

The ground split apart directly in front of him, forcing Simon to leap backward.

A massive rift now separated their group from June and Nyx.

"Careful," Mr. Ken warned as everyone stepped back and stared at the deep fissure. Strange blue smoke began rising from within the crack.

They looked toward June, who had also noticed the sudden change. He stared around in panic while keeping his arms tightly wrapped around Nyx.

"Stay where you are!" Mr. Ken shouted. "We’ll find a way to get you—"

A massive explosion suddenly erupted in the distance, cutting him off.

Everyone immediately turned toward the mountain where the blue orbs had disappeared.

The mountain exploded.

Chunks of snow and stone were thrown into the air as something enormous burst through the collapsing peak.

Mr. Ken and the others struggled to remain standing as they stared at the creature in shock.

A gigantic blue-and-white, serpent-like dragon emerged from the shattered mountain, its enormous body twisting through the sky as blue flames poured from its mouth.

The creature’s appearance alone was intimidating. It hovered above the landscape, its massive body surrounded by swirling snow as it breathed blue flames into the freezing atmosphere. Somehow, its arrival made the already unbearable cold intensify even further.

Mr. Ken hugged himself tightly as he stared into the distance.

"That’s the final monster," he said quietly. "The core of the anomaly dungeon."

"If we kill it, we can escape, right?" Simon asked.

Mr. Ken nodded.

"Yes, but I feel like it’ll be almost impossible to even touch that thing." He shook his head grimly. "It’ll probably kill us before we get anywhere near it. It’s at least ten times stronger than those other creatures."

Ryan looked down at the phone in his hand.

"I wonder if taking pictures will save us again."

June held Nyx tightly in his arms, desperately trying to shield him from the freezing air as the temperature continued to drop.

His own breath came out as white mist while he whispered, "Stay with me. Just wait a little longer. We’ll be fine... you’ll be fine."

Nyx coughed weakly and tightened his grip around June’s hand.

"Cold..."

He swallowed with difficulty.

"Brother... it’s cold..."

June’s expression tightened with worry as he held him closer.

Then, while holding Nyx, June suddenly felt something strange.

He could sense the energy inside Nyx.

For some reason, June could actually perceive the flow of his energy with surprising clarity. He assumed it was because of their hundred-percent compatibility, allowing him to sense things he normally wouldn’t have been able to detect.

And what he sensed made his expression change.

Nyx’s energy core was incredibly unstable.

June could tell that if the instability continued, Nyx’s energy would eventually spiral completely out of control. His core could either implode from the pressure or erupt violently, either outcome potentially killing the F-Rank Esper.

It was strange.

An F-Rank Esper shouldn’t naturally possess such an unstable level of energy. Someone of that rank shouldn’t have enough power within their body to create a reaction capable of driving them into madness or destroying their core.

But June didn’t question it.

He knew this was the villain, and there was clearly something unusual about Nyx’s energy that the original comic had never properly explored.

June held him tighter as he felt that energy raging inside his body, twisting and surging as though it were preparing to tear him apart from within.

Nyx’s body simply wasn’t capable of containing it.

And June knew there was only one way to stabilize that energy now.

If his memories were correct, the only thing that could do it was a kiss.

The same kiss that had saved them once before.
