June noticed a pattern as he sat on his bed in the hostel, scrolling through the academy forum.
He occupied nearly ninety-nine percent of the trending topics.
And, judging by the posts, about seventy percent of them were hate posts, while the remaining thirty percent were actually positive.
At least there were positive ones.
June was even surprised that some people seemed to actually like him now.
No one had liked the original character!
Even more shocking, some group of fujoshi* were somehow shipping him with several men.
June could practically count his ships now.
Him and Nyx — he didn’t have a problem with this one. Somehow.
Him and Simon — ??? June had no words.
Him and Kael — Hell no. June wanted him dead!
Him and Rayder — Sure, he was cute, but June wanted nothing to do with those walking red flags. He already had enough trouble brewing.
And him with the remaining members of the Elite 5?
June didn’t even understand how that had become a thing.
He shook his head as he continued scrolling through the endless shipping posts, certain that Ryan was somewhere in the middle of all this.
Ryan had been laughing and smiling at the posts from his own bed for quite a while now.
He was basically teasing June endlessly with them.
June shook his head again.
It was surprising enough that nothing involving Finn was trending tonight. According to the original plotline, Finn was supposed to become the highlight of the evening.
But now? He was nowhere to be seen.
June scoffed, a disturbing theory forming in his mind.
"Am I fucking hijacking the plot as the central character now?"
At this point, he was starting to fear that might actually be the case.
June eventually stopped scrolling through the academy forum and returned to his chat with his elder brother, Lucas.
Or, more accurately, he was staring at Lucas’s empty DM without having sent anything.
He sat there, staring at the blank chat while trying to figure out what to say and how to say it.
He guessed the original June had never really spoken to his elder brother through DMs before. Considering their relationship, that wasn’t exactly surprising.
June bit his lower lip as he thought about how to start.
He wanted to ask Lucas for help with his plan to save Nyx from his home.
He already had an idea in mind, one he had been quietly working on. And given Lucas’s position, June knew his elder brother was probably the best person to help him pull it off.
June sighed when the words still wouldn’t come.
He lay back on his bed, remembering how Nyx had reacted when June made the offer.
When June had offered to help him break free from his parents, or at least get him out of that house so he could stay in the school dorms or somewhere safe, Nyx had been skeptical.
He hadn’t believed it was possible.
"Thanks for considering it... but it’s not that easy."
June knew exactly what Nyx was afraid of.
A failed attempt would only make his parents more suspicious of June and cause them to tighten their control over Nyx.
June understood that perfectly. But he was still determined.
He had assured Nyx that he should trust him and that June would find a way to help him through it.
Nyx wanted freedom too.
And so, when he remained silent, June understood that silence as an agreement to let him try.
With that, June had made him a promise.
"Trust me. I’ll save you, no matter what it takes."
And now June lay on his bed, trying to find the right words to message Lucas.
He had already promised Nyx. Now he had to make good on it.
If he wanted his plan to work, he needed to get on Lucas’s good side first.
---
Lucas was wrapping up some work in his office that night.
Grey was there as well, standing near the window and staring out into the night.
The office remained quiet until Lucas’s phone suddenly beeped.
He picked it up to check the notification, and Grey immediately turned toward him before approaching.
"That’s strange. I didn’t know you used social media," Grey teased with a smile, folding his arms. "And who is it? A girlfriend? A boyfriend?"
"So nosy," Lucas muttered as he unlocked his phone.
Then he froze, it was a message from June.
Grey immediately noticed the surprise on his face. "What is it? What’s with that expression?"
He moved closer, and Lucas reluctantly showed him the screen. June had messaged him.
[Free this weekend? Let’s have a meal out.]
The two of them stared at the message for a moment.
Grey smiled and shook his head. "What a brother you are. I can’t believe you two haven’t even exchanged messages before."
"I’m busy," Lucas casually replied.
Grey folded his arms.
"Busy, my foot. I know you’re the one who’s most excited to talk to your little brother and spend time with him. You care about him more than anyone, yet you’re always so cold and aloof."
"Nosy," Lucas muttered again, staring at his phone while thinking about how to respond.
"Just agree," Grey said with a smile. "June feels different lately. I can’t tell if it’s because he’s grown up or something, but he really does seem different. Maybe he genuinely wants to get closer to you."
Lucas stared at the message.
"Or report another trouble he’s caused."
"So cold." Grey shook his head. "Just say okay or something. It won’t kill you."
Lucas sighed. "I’m too busy to—" His hand accidentally slipped across the screen.
A sticker was sent. A ridiculous cat dancing while blowing kisses.
"..."
Lucas’s jaw dropped.
Grey stared at him. "What? Did he block you or something?"
Lucas said nothing.
He simply stared at his phone in horror as Grey stepped closer to see what he had sent.
The moment Grey saw the sticker, he burst into laughter.
"What were you thinking? Oh, dear!"
He laughed so hard that he had to hold his stomach while Lucas frantically tried to delete the message.
But it was already too late.
---
June saw the response.
The sticker.
He stared at his phone for several seconds, one eyebrow raised in complete confusion.
"Is he drunk or something?"
His eyes remained fixed on the ridiculous dancing cat. "Was he hacked?"
