Chapter 40. A winter blanket from his majestyChapter 40: 40. A winter blanket from his majesty
A FEW HOURS LATER
XAVIER
By evening, I had finally finished cooking. I stepped out of the kitchen carrying a tray, already thinking about going straight to my room. Then I saw Lang Li waiting in the corridor.
"Your Majesty?"I asked.
He looked at me, then at the tray.
"Finished?"He asked.
"Yes." I smiled politely. "Everything is ready."
He nodded and walked closer. I expected him to ask about dinner. Instead, before I could react, he leaned down and pressed a quick kiss to my forehead. I froze as the tray nearly slipped from my hands.
"Good work today."Lang Li calmly straightened.
"What?"I stared at him.
He simply walked past me, and my brain stopped functioning.
"He just..."I slowly touched my forehead.
"Ding. Emperor Lang Li affection: 27%."A system said.
"Why did it go up?!"I stared at the system.
"Ding. Host affection: 42%."A system said again.
"WHAT?!"My eyes widened.
I looked down the corridor. Lang Li was already disappearing around the corner.
"I am never emotionally recovering from this palace."My face burned.
From behind a pillar came a muffled giggle. I slowly turned. Both Empress Dowagers were peeking out. They gave each other a triumphant high five.
"Oh, they planned this."I closed my eyes.
And somehow, that realization made my heart beat even faster. That night, the temperature suddenly dropped. I had been sitting near the window, finishing a recipe note, when I shivered.
"Why did it get so cold?" I rubbed my arms and decided I should probably go to bed.
I barely remembered pulling the blanket over myself before exhaustion took over. Sometime during the night, I felt someone gently place another blanket over me. I was too sleepy to open my eyes.
"Warm enough now." The voice was quiet. I vaguely recognized it.
Then I fell asleep again. The next morning, I woke up warm. Suspiciously warm. I sat up and looked at the blanket covering me. It was beautiful, dark fabric, soft silver embroidery, and an unmistakable imperial crest woven into one corner.
"This is expensive."I touched it.
Very expensive.
"Don’t tell me..."I immediately remembered the voice from last night. I stared at the blanket. "Lang Li?"
My face warmed. Of course it was him. Who else would casually put an imperial blanket over a sleeping chef? I carefully folded it. Then I stepped outside. The moment I entered the courtyard, I noticed several omegas gathered near the tea pavilion, they saw me. Then they saw the blanket in my arms
"Is that His Majesty’s winter blanket?"One omega slowly whispered.
"He gave it to Chef Wei?"Another gasped.
"At night?"A third covered her mouth.
"Nothing happened!"I nearly dropped it.
Nobody had even accused me. Mei Lin suddenly appeared among them, she looked at the blanket, then at me, then smiled.
"That’s sweet."She said and nodded in aproval.
"You aren’t upset?" I blinked.
"Why would I be?" She smiled wider. "I think you two look good together."
"You too?!"I stared at her.
"We ship it."The omegas immediately nodded.
"Very much." Another one added.
"Completely." Third one added. "I have been waiting for someone else to say it!"
"I officially support this."Mei Lin raised her hand.
"This palace has lost its mind."I covered my face.
"Should we make a name for them?"One omega whispered.
"Definitely."Another nodded seriously.
"No."I slowly backed away.
"Too late.Mei Lin laughed.
And from somewhere behind us came the unmistakable sound of someone clearing his throat. We all turned as Lang Li stood there. He looked at the blanket, then at me, then at the group of omegas.
"Your Majesty, we approve."One of them whispered.
Lang Li paused.
"I see."He said, and then, to my horror, the corner of his mouth lifted.
I wanted to disappear. By lunch, I discovered the situation had somehow become worse. Mei Lin had apparently formed an organization. I found her in the garden surrounded by several omegas, all whispering excitedly around a small notebook.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
Everyone froze.
"Nothing."Mei Lin slowly closed the notebook.
"That word never means anything anymore."I narrowed my eyes.
"We are simply discussing His Majesty’s courtship strategy."She smiled.
"My what?"I nearly choked.
"Your courtship."Mei Lin said.
"I don’t have one!"I argued.
Mei Lin ignored me. She was apparently very committed to this madness, later that afternoon, Mei Lin somehow managed to get Lang Li alone. I only knew because I accidentally passed the pavilion and heard her voice.
"Your Majesty, you need to be more obvious."She said.
"How?"Lang Li calmly asked.
"Bring him flowers."She said.
"I already did."He said,
"Then bring more."She said.
"I did."He nodded.
"Pastries?"She asked.
"Already."He nodded.
"Blankets?"She added again.
"Already."He nodded.
"You’re actually good at this." Mei Lin went silent.
"I have been listening."He said.
I peeked around the corner. Lang Li was sitting there with the most serious expression imaginable while Mei Lin flipped through her notebook.
"Next suggestion." She said. "Compliment his cooking."
"I already tell him his food is good."She said.
"Then compliment his hair." Lang Li paused. "I like his hair."
"Excellent. Say that."Mei Lin’s eyes widened.
"I can."He nodded in agreement.
I immediately ducked behind the wall. My face was burning. Then Lang Li suddenly looked directly toward my hiding place. I froze, as apparently he had known I was there.
"Should we continue?"His mouth curved slightly.
I fled. I needed to get away from this as fast as possible. Why did he decide to compliment my hair of all of the things?! I needed to find a way to get away from all the omegas and their shipping. In novel, they were supposed to try to win Lang Li attention. Why is Mei Lin trying to help him win me over when she is the one who is supposed to be the female lead of this world?!
