Chapter 43: 43. Mei Lin and Han Jin approved!

For several seconds, nobody moved. The guard beside Lang Li seemed just as confused as I was. Then he stepped forward.

"My name is Han Jin. I am one of His Majesty’s personal guards."He placed one fist against his chest and bowed politely.

"Han Jin..."Mei Lin immediately went red.

He looked at her and then, without the slightest hesitation, he reached for her hand. Mei Lin’s eyes widened. Han Jin gently lifted her hand and pressed a respectful kiss against the back of it. My jaw dropped, but Mei Lin looked like her soul had just left her body.

"I..." She stammered.

"I apologize if that was too forward."Han Jin smiled.

"Too forward?" I whispered.

"Ow!"Mei Lin immediately stepped on my foot.

"Are you alright, Chef Wei?"Han Jin glanced at me.

"Perfectly." I quickly straightened. "Absolutely perfect."

Mei Lin was still staring at Han Jin’s hand around hers.

Then the sound of a teacup being placed on a table caught our attention. The Empress Dowager had been watching, her eyes moved from Han Jin to Mei Lin, then to their joined hands, then slowly toward Lang Li as a knowing smile appeared on her face.

"Oh."She began.

"What?"Lang Li looked at her.

"Your Majesty."She leaned slightly toward him.

"What?"Lang Li asked.

I immediately became suspicious.

"What problem?"I asked.

The Empress Dowager ignored me.

"Lady Mei Lin."She looked at Mei Lin again.

"Yes, Your Majesty?"Mei Lin immediately released Han Jin’s hand.

"You seem to have found someone."The Empress Dowager smiled.

"I... perhaps."Mei Lin’s face became even redder.

"If Your Majesty permits it, my intentions toward Lady Mei Lin are sincere."Han Jin bowed.

The Empress Dowager’s smile became enormous. Lang Li glanced at Han Jin, then at Mei Lin, then back at Han Jin.

"Do you care for her?"She asked.

"Yes."Han Jin answered immediately.

Mei Lin’s eyes widened.

"That was fast."I quietly whispered.

She elbowed me. Lang Li remained silent for another moment, then he nodded.

"Then you have my approval." He said.

"Your Majesty?"Mei Lin looked stunned.

"Han Jin is loyal, capable, and trustworthy." Lang Li glanced at his guard. "If he has chosen you, and you have chosen him, I see no reason to interfere. I understand that you two stay still here, but since I was never trully interested it worked out rather great that just staying in unloving relationship."

"Excellent."The Empress Dowager practically glowed.

I narrowed my eyes. Something about this was suspiciously convenient. She turned toward me, then toward Mei Lin, then back toward me. Suddenly, I understood. She wasn’t particularly interested in Mei Lin being close to me, she had simply been trying to make sure Mei Lin wouldn’t become another person attached to me. Even though Mei Lin had never wanted me romantically in the first place.

"You’re doing this on purpose."I stared at the Empress Dowager.

"Doing what?"She smiled innocently.

"You approved them very quickly."I said.

"Why wouldn’t I?"She asked.

"Because..." I glanced at Mei Lin and Han Jin then back at her.

"I merely support young people finding happiness."She gave me the most innocent expression imaginable.

Lang Li’s mouth twitched.

"And you knew!"I pointed at him.

"I suspected."He said.

"You both planned this!"I groaaned.

"No." Lang Li paused. "Although I do think it is a favorable development."

"Favorable for whom?"I stared at him.

"For everyone."He looked directly at me.

The Empress Dowager immediately covered her smile with her teacup. Mei Lin was now bright red, while Han Jin looked remarkably calm.

"This palace is unbelievable."I sighed.

"At least I’m not interested in your Emperor."Mei Lin suddenly leaned closer.

"Mei Lin!"I nearly choked.

She giggled, Han Jin looked confused. Lang Li raised an eyebrow, the Empress Dowager looked delighted, and I realized I had somehow gone from discovering that I was a missing imperial prince to accidentally witnessing the beginning of Mei Lin’s romance.

"Ding."The system appeared. "New relationship detected. Han Jin and Mei Lin compatibility: 91%."

"At least one thing in this palace makes sense."I blinked.

"Emperor Lang Li relationship affection: 30%. Empress Dowager relationship affection: 35%. Host romantic affection toward Emperor Lang Li: 45%."Another notification appeared.

"No."I immediately closed the window.

"No what?"Lang Li looked at me.

"Nothing."I sighed.

He stared suspiciously as I looked away.

"Perfect."Behind me, the Empress Dowager quietly whispered to herself.

"Perfect what?"I heard her.

"Nothing, Wei."She smiled.

The musicians suddenly changed their tune, a softer melody filled the courtyard. Everyone turned toward the dance floor. Mei Lin looked at Han Jin.

"May I?"Han Jin offered his hand.

"Yes."Mei Lin’s cheeks turned pink.

He gently took her hand and led her onto the dance floor. I couldn’t help smiling, they were adorable. Mei Lin kept stepping slightly too quickly, while Han Jin patiently adjusted his pace to match hers. When she nearly stumbled, he caught her without making a big deal out of it.

"I warned you I can’t dance." She whispered.

"I don’t mind."Han said.

"You should."She smiled.

"I really don’t."Han smiled back.

I covered my mouth to hide my laugh. Even the Empress Dowager looked delighted, then someone stepped beside me.

"Would you dance with me?" I froze.

"Lang Li."I didn’t even need to turn around.

"Yes."He said.

"You want to dance?"I slowly looked at him.

"I do."He said.

"Why?"I asked.

"Because everyone else seems to be enjoying themselves."His golden eyes softened.

I glanced toward Mei Lin and Han Jin, then back at him.

"I don’t really know how."I sighed.

"Neither did they." Before I could argue, Lang Li held out his hand and pulled me into his arms.

As I got pulled, I noticed my parents smiling with Hin while Ana gave me a ’thumbs up’ in approval. Traitors, but why does being held in his hands feel so good?

"Host feelings towards Lang Li has reached 50%."A system announced. "Body feeling is available."

At that exact moment, I began to feel a warm sensation in my lower stomach. Why do I feel so warm?
