AT THE SAME TIME
XAVIER
The warmth in my stomach became impossible to ignore. I tried to blame the festival lanterns, then the music, then the ridiculously warm robe. Anything except the fact that I was standing in Lang Li’s arms and apparently becoming increasingly comfortable with it.
"This is fine." I muttered.
Lang Li looked down at me.
"What?"He asked.
"Nothing."I said.
I tried to straighten myself. I lasted approximately three seconds, the music slowed again, and Lang Li’s hand settled more securely against my back as he guided me through another turn. My balance shifted and instead of stepping away, I instinctively leaned against him. My shoulder touched his chest, then my back rested against him, then, somehow, I was practically leaning into his chest while he continued dancing as though this was completely normal. I froze.
"Oh."I gasped lightly.
"Comfortable?"Lang Li’s arms tightened slightly.
"No."I shook my head quickly before I paused. "Maybe."
"You can admit it."His quiet laugh rumbled against my back.
"I absolutely can not."I said.
"Why?"He asked.
"Because this is embarrassing." I said.
"You haven’t tried to escape."He said
I immediately realized he was right. I could have stepped away, I didn’t. Instead, when he guided me into another slow turn, I ended up even closer, my head nearly rested against his chest. I could hear his heartbeat steady, calm and mine was doing the complete opposite.
"Ding. Host romantic affection toward Emperor Lang Li: 50%."A system said.
"Stop announcing that!"I mentally screamed.
"What are you complaining about?"Lang Li glanced down.
"The system."I said.
"The system?"He asked.
"Nothing." I quickly looked away.
Around us, several omega concubines were watching. I expected jealousy, instead, they were waving their fans excitedly.
"Look!"One of them said.
"They’re dancing!"Another one nodded.
"Chef Wei is practically leaning against His Majesty!" A third one added.
"How adorable!" One omega covered her mouth. "They look so good together."
"I’m not even jealous."Another nodded enthusiastically.
"Neither am I."Another one added.
"Me neither."A male omega smiled.
"What happened to everyone?"I stared at them.
Mei Lin, still dancing with Han Jin nearby, laughed.
"They’re shipping you."She said.
"I noticed!"I nodded.
"Don’t stop!"One omega waved her fan harder.
I wanted to disappear. Lang Li, unfortunately, seemed to be enjoying every second of this, his expression was calm, but there was unmistakable amusement in his golden eyes.
"You seem popular."He said.
"This is your fault."I said.
"My fault?"He asked, confused.
"You invited me to dance."I reminded him.
"And you agreed."He said.
"I was pressured."I sighed.
"You walked into my arms willingly." He grinned.
I went silent. He had a point, a terrible point. I shifted slightly, intending to create some distance. Instead, Lang Li’s hand steadied me when I stumbled. I ended up leaning against him again.
"Careful."His voice lowered.
"I am."I said.
"You nearly fell."He said.
"I was distracted."I sighed.
"By what?"He asked.
"Nothing."I hesitated.
"Of course."He smiled.
I could feel the warmth of his chest through the fabric between us, my face grew hotter.
"Ding. Body response detected."A system said.
"Please stop."I said
"Host’s physical comfort level has increased."A system said.
"STOP."I gasped.
"You really are talking to yourself tonight."Lang Li raised an eyebrow.
"I’m having a difficult evening."I sighed.
"I noticed."He said.
The music continued. For once, nobody was trying to separate us. The Empress Dowager was smiling, my parents were watching with suspiciously happy expressions. Ana was practically celebrating from the sidelines, Hin was whispering something to her as Mei Lin was still dancing happily with Han Jin, and the omegas were openly waving their fans and whispering about us. I sighed and finally stopped fighting the situation. I let myself rest against Lang Li’s chest. His arm tightened around me as his chin nearly brushed the top of my head. For a few quiet seconds, I simply listened to his heartbeat and strangely I didn’t want to move.
"Ding. Host romantic affection toward Emperor Lang Li: 50%."A system said.
"Fine."I closed my eyes.
"Fine?"Lang Li looked down.
"Just keep dancing."I said.
"As you wish."His expression softened.
And for the first time that evening, I stopped thinking about imperial bloodlines, mysterious boxes, burned documents, reincarnation, and palace conspiracies. I just let Lang Li hold me while the music continued. Unfortunately, judging by the delighted whispers around us, the entire palace was going to remember this moment forever. I should have known the peaceful moment wouldn’t last. The music continued, and I stayed exactly where I was, against Lang Li arm, comfortable, far too comfortable.
"Hah..."I let out a tiny, involuntary breath.
Mei Lin’s eyes suddenly widened. She stopped dancing.
"Wait."She said.
"What?"Han Jin nearly stepped on her foot.
Mei Lin stared at me, then at Lang Li, then back at me. Her expression became strangely serious.
"Oh no."Mei Lin said.
"What?"I blinked.
"Beta heat."She whispered.
"What?!"I nearly fell out of Lang Li’s arms.
"It’s rare! Very rare!"Mei Lin quickly covered her mouth.
"I am not having anything!"I said.
"You’re flushed, unusually warm, and you’re refusing to leave his arms."She said quickly.
"I am comfortable!"I refused to believe it.
Lang Li’s expression became increasingly confused. Mei Lin pointed discreetly toward me.
"Some Betas can experience a rare heat like period when their body strongly responds to an Alpha’s presence."She said.
"That sounds made up."I stared at her.
"It’s real."Mei Lin said.
"I would know!"I said.
"You’ve been in this world for less time than I have."She argued.
"That is not helpful!"I said angrily.
"What exactly is happening?"Lang Li looked between us.
"Nothing!" I immediately said.
Mei Lin opened her mouth.
"Don’t."I pointed at her.
She wisely closed it. I turned toward Lang Li.
"I just want to sit down."I said.
"Then let’s go."He said.
"No."I said suddenly.
"No?"He blinked.
"I want to stay here."I said.
"Wei."He began.
"I am comfortable."I said.
"You’ve been leaning against me for half an hour."He said.
"Exactly."I nodded.
Lang Li stared at me in disbelief.
"Five more minutes."I leaned against his chest again.
He closed his eyes as a long, exhausted sigh escaped him.
"You’re impossible."He said.
"I’m tired."I said.
"I know."He said.
"Then let me stay."I sighed.
Another groan escaped him, not romantic, not dramatic. Just the exhausted groan of a man who had apparently reached the limit of his patience.
"Fine."He said.
I smiled.
Then suddenly Lang Li bent down and effortlessly lifted me. I was thrown over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.
"LANG LI!"I gasped.
The entire courtyard went silent, Mei Lin’s jaw dropped, Han Jin looked away, the omegas immediately covered their mouths, desperately trying not to laugh.
"Put me down!"I gasped.
"No."He said.
"I can walk!"I said.
"You refused to leave."He argued.
"I changed my mind!"I shook my head.
"You had your chance."He started walking.
"This is humiliating!"I kicked my legs uselessly.
"He’s carrying the imperial prince like a sack of grain."Behind us, someone whispered.
"Honestly, adorable."Another omega whispered.
"I can hear you!"I groaned.
The Empress Dowager was openly laughing now. Ana gave me another enthusiastic thumbs up. Traitors, every single one of them. Lang Li continued toward the palace without slowing.
"Ding. Host dignity level: critically low."A system said.
"System!"I gasped.
"Recommendation: cooperate with Emperor Lang Li."A system suggested.
"I hate everyone."I groaned.
"You’re still comfortable."Lang Li’s voice came calmly from beneath me.
"Maybe."I stopped struggling.
"Of course."He sighed again.
And he carried me away while the entire festival dissolved into barely contained laughter and delighted whispers.
