Chapter 55: 55. System reveals itself!!

AT THE SAME TIME

XAVIER

The moment Mei Lin finished explaining, the system suddenly flashed.

"Ding. Emergency narrative convergence detected." A system said.

I barely had time to read it. A strange force swept through the banquet hall.

"Wait, what?!"I gasped.

The world blurred. Then we heard a loud thud. Everyone landed inside Lang Li’s throne room.

"What the hell just happened?"I looked around.

"Xavier, are you alright?"Lin Rui immediately grabbed my arm.

"I’m fine." I sighed.

Across the room, Zhao Rui was staring at the guards.

"Why did the entire banquet disappear?"Zhao asked.

Lang Li stood near the throne, looking thoroughly unimpressed.

"That is an excellent question."He said.

"You."The Empress Dowager pointed at Mei Lin.

"Me?"Mei Lin blinked.

"You clearly know something."She said.

"She does."Han Jin immediately moved beside Mei Lin.

Everyone turned toward them.

"Then explain."Madam Qiao frowned.

"Fine."Mei Lin sighed.

"First, when I say reincarnator, I mean someone who remembers living another life before arriving in this world."She looked around the room.

Several people exchanged confused looks.

"So..."Zhao Rui raised a hand as he hesitated. "You were dead?"

"Basically."Mei Lin said.

"And then you woke up here?"He asked.

"Yes."She said.

"That is possible?"Lin Rui looked bewildered.

"No idea." Mei Lin shrugged. "Apparently."

"And Xavier?"The Empress Dowager slowly looked at me.

"Same situation."I raised my hand.

"So both of you remember another world?"She stared.

"Yes."I nodded.

"Another world where this world was a novel?"She asked.

"Yes."I nodded.

"I need tea."She sat down.

"Same."Ana immediately nodded.

"So all this time..."Huan looked like his brain was about to explode. He pointed at Mei Lin.

"You knew things because you had read them?"

"Some things."She said.

"And Wei knew things because..."Huan began.

"Because he is Xavier."Mei Lin finished.

"Correct."I nodded.

"Then the people we thought we knew..."Madam Qiao slowly looked between us. "Don’t necessarily exist anymore."

"So Wei isn’t the original Wei."Song Hue’s expression became thoughtful.

"No." I looked down. "I am Xavier living in Wei’s body."

"And Mei Lin?"Lang Li’s eyes remained fixed on me.

"I am not the original Mei Lin either."Mei Lin squeezed Han Jin’s hand.

"I noticed."Han Jin smiled.

Everyone stared.

"So..."The Empress Dowager suddenly laughed. She looked between us. "The original characters have been replaced by two outsiders who apparently decided to ruin the plot."

"That sounds about right."Mei Lin smiled.

"I support ruining the plot."Ana raised her hand.

"Strongly."Hin nodded.

"I think we’re all doomed."Huan sighed.

I looked around the throne room. For the first time, everyone seemed to understand, they weren’t dealing with the original Wei and Mei Lin anymore. They were dealing with Xavier and Mei Lin. Two reincarnators, two people who remembered a story that no longer followed its own rules, and apparently, two people who had already changed the fate of everyone around them.

"Ding. New narrative status: Original plot rejected."The system flickered.

"Finally."I stared.

"Looks like we’re the improved versions."Mei Lin grinned.

"Improved?"Lang Li raised an eyebrow.

"She got Han Jin."I pointed at Mei Lin.

"And I got you."Then I pointed at myself.

The entire room went silent. Lang Li slowly looked away with a light blush on his cheeks.

"Yes."The Empress Dowager immediately started laughing. She wiped away a tear. "Definitely improved."

The throne room was finally quiet, too quiet. Everyone was still trying to understand the fact that Mei Lin and I weren’t the original characters they had known.

"There is one more thing." Mei Lin suddenly raised her hand.

"Of course there is."I looked at her.

"My name wasn’t actually Mei Lin."She smiled awkwardly.

The room went silent again.

"You’re telling them now?"Han Jin looked at her.

"I think they should know."She said as she turned toward me. "My name was Elena."

"Elena?"I blinked.

"I was a librarian."She nodded.

"A librarian?"My eyes widened.

"Yes."She said.

"Where?"I asked.

"At the city library where you used to get your books."She hesitated.

"Wait."My expression slowly changed. I stood. "The library?"

"The same one."Mei Lin nodded.

"You mean..."My heart began pounding.

"Yes." She smiled faintly. "I remember seeing you there."

"You are the librarian?"I stared at her. "The one who gave me the novel? YOU?"

"The book you picked up that day was the same novel we ended up inside."She nodded.

Everyone stared between us.

"That’s terrifying."Ana whispered.

"Extremely."Hin nodded.

"So you were literally the person who handed me the book?"I pointed at Mei Lin.

"Yes."She said.

"And then we both reincarnated into it?"I asked.

"Apparently."She nodded.

"This is insane."I said.

"I thought it was coincidence at first."Mei Lin laughed nervously.

"At first?"I asked.

"Then I remembered the title." She looked toward me. "And I realized you had checked out the exact same copy."

"So the two people who entered this world..."I stared at her. "Started with the same book. From the same library."

"Yes." She said.

"I have no idea what any of this means."The Empress Dowager slowly raised her teacup.

"Neither do I."Zhao Rui nodded.

"I stopped understanding this several revelations ago."Huan sighed.

"So you knew her before this world?"Lang Li looked at me.

"Not personally."I shook my head.

"Not exactly."Mei Lin smiled. She paused. "But apparently our stories were connected before either of us ever knew it."

"Ding. Origin connection confirmed."The system flickered.

I stared at the notification then at Elena.

"So..." I sighed. "The librarian who gave me the novel is now one of the people trapped inside it with me."

"Looks like you should have returned the book on time."Elena grinned.

"Elena."I stared at her.

"What?"She asked.

"I think being reincarnated is punishment enough."I said.

Ana burst out laughing, even Lang Li smiled. For the first time since discovering how tangled this world had become, I didn’t feel quite so alone. Because apparently, the person who had unknowingly handed me my fate had been dragged into it too. The throne room had barely recovered when the System suddenly made the loudest noise yet.

"DING!"The system made a loud ringing sound.

Everyone jumped.

"Please don’t."I looked up.

The air in front of the throne exploded into a massive glowing screen. Colorful letters appeared.

"WELCOME, DEAR REINCARNATORS!"The screen flickered.

"Oh no."I stared.

WELCOME TO: "THE LYCAN EMPEROR’S SECRET MALE CONCUBINE!"The screen flickered.

Then a second line appeared.

"CURRENT STATUS: PLOT COMPLETELY BROKEN." The screen flickered.

Ana immediately started laughing, Hin covered his mouth, Huan looked horrified, the Empress Dowager stared at the screen.

"Is that supposed to be comforting?"She asked.

The system ignored her.

"CAUSE OF PLOT FAILURE: XAVIER: 100%. ELENA: 97%."The system said.

"Why am I getting blamed?"Elena pointed at herself.

"Because you were he librarian!"I pointed at her.

"That’s not my fault!"She said.

"RELATIONSHIP STATUS." The screen suddenly changed.

"No."I immediately became nervous as the first name appeared.

"LANG LI and XAVIER: 60%"A system said.

"What is that?"Lang Li frowned at the screen.

"Nothing."I covered my face.

"XAVIER and LANG LI: 55%"Another line appeared.

The entire room went silent.

"System!"My face tuned bright red.

"Oh?"The Empress Dowager’s eyes widened.

"Don’t you dare."I said.

"I said nothing."She smiled.

"SONG HUE and XAVIER: 21%" Then the screen continued.

"What does this mean?"Song Hue stared at the number.

"Please stop asking questions."I groaned.

"XAVIER and SONG HUE: UNKNOWN."A system said.

"UNKNOWN?"I asked.

"ERROR. CHILDHOOD MEMORY INTERFERENCE." The system flickered violently.

Song Hue’s expression became serious, Lang Li’s expression became even more serious.

"Can we please turn this thing off?"I slowly backed away.

"MEI LIN and HAN JIN: 91%" The screen ignored me.

Mei Lin immediately turned red and Han Jin smiled.

"I think that one is accurate."He said.

"Han Jin!"Mei Lin gasped.

Ana was laughing so hard she had to sit down.

"HAN JIN and MEI LIN: 93%" The system added.

The entire room erupted.

"This is humiliating!"Mei Lin covered her face.

"See?! I’m not the only victim!"I pointed at the screen.

"This system is wonderful."The Empress Dowager looked delighted.

"No, it isn’t!"I gasped.

"IMPORTANT NOTICE: ORIGINAL STORY: 0%. CURRENT STORY: 184%. LOGIC: ERROR. ROMANCE: OVERLOADED. PLOT: PLEASE STOP."The screen suddenly displayed one final message.

I watched how the system glitched and turned off completely.

"Even the system is giving up."Huan stared.

"Finally. Something we agree on."I nodded solemnly.

"DING. MAIN STORY PLOTLINE RECALIBRATING."The screen suddenly flickered back on.

Everyone froze.

"What now?" I groaned.

"Original narrative: discarded. New narrative: forming." A final message appeared.

"WARNING: Major character destinies are being reassigned."

"That sounds terrible."I stared at the screen.

"DING. Recalibration: 12%."A system said.

"We’re doomed."Huan sighed.

The screen glitched before vanishing again.
